Capitolo 25
Pinocchio starts crying and screaming, but it is all useless, because there are no houses nearby and no one passes on the road.
Intanto arriva la notte.
Inzwischen ist die Nacht angebrochen.
Meanwhile, night falls.
The poor puppet, partly due to the pain in his leg and partly due to the fear of being alone at night, is almost about to faint, when suddenly he sees a Firefly passing near his head.
La chiama e le dice:
Er ruft sie an und sagt:
He calls her and says:
- Oh Firefly, könntest du mich bitte von diesem Leiden befreien?
− Oh little firefly, could you please free me from this suffering?
− Povero figliolo!
- Armer Sohn!
− the Firefly replies, and stops pityingly to look at him.
- Warum waren Sie zwischen diesen beiden Eisen eingeklemmt?
- Why were you trapped between those two irons?
− No...
- And who taught you to take other people's things?
− Avevo fame...
− grida Pinocchio piangendo.
- Pinocchio cries out crying.
- But another time I will not do it again.
At this point the dialogue is interrupted by a very small sound of approaching footsteps.
It is the master of the field who comes to see if there is any wild animal trapped in the trap.
- So you're the one taking away my chickens?
− Io no, io no!
- Not me, not me!
− grida Pinocchio, singhiozzando.
- weint Pinocchio schluchzend.
- Pinocchio cries out, sobbing.
I will give you a lesson you will remember for a long time!
And opening the trap he takes the puppet by the neck and carries him all the way to his home.
Arriving in front of the house, he throws him on the ground and, while holding a foot on his neck, says to him:
− Ormai è tardi e voglio andare a letto.
- It's late now and I want to go to bed.
Domani facciamo i conti.
Tomorrow we do the math.
In the meantime, since my dog who was keeping watch at night died today, you take his place immediately.
Tu mi farai da cane da guardia.
Du wirst mein Wachhund sein.
You will be my watchdog.
With that said, he puts a large collar tied to a long iron chain around his neck.
- If it rains tonight, - says the farmer, - you can go to that little wooden house, where there is always on the ground the straw that used for bedding my poor dog, for four years.
And if thieves come, remember to bark loudly.
After these words, the farmer enters the house and locks the door.
Poor Pinocchio remains on the ground in front of the house, more dead than alive from the cold, hunger, and fear.
- I'm okay with that!
Purtroppo mi sta bene!
Unfortunately, I'm fine with it!
I wanted to be lazy, a wanderer... I listened to bad companions and that's why misfortune always follows me.
If I had been a proper boy, like many others, if I had wanted to study and work, if I had stayed at home with my poor dad, I wouldn't be here in the fields now, guarding a farmer's house.
Oh, se potessi rinascere un'altra volta!
Ach, könnte ich doch wiedergeboren werden!
Oh, if I could be born again!
Ma ormai è tardi, e ci vuole pazienza!
But now it's late, and it takes patience!
Having said that, he enters the shack and falls asleep.
