"Sua Altezza, le mie fonti mi informano che nella capitale francese si osserva una contrazione delle vendite di merci francesi. "Hoheit, meine Quellen teilen mir mit, dass in der französischen Hauptstadt der Verkauf französischer Waren rückläufig ist. Tilsit. Tilsit.

In questa piccola cittadina sul Neman, oggi Sovetsk, Regione di Kaliningrado, si erano incontrati i due imperatori. In this small town on the Neman, today Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Region, the two emperors had met. In una ricca tenda su una chiatta ancorata al centro del fiume. In einem reichen Zelt auf einem Lastkahn mitten im Fluss. In a rich tent on a barge anchored in the middle of the river. Per alcune ore si erano scontrati due caratteri. Napoleone impetuoso e Alesssandro, ossequioso, ma inflessibile. Napoleon ungestüm und Alesssandro, unterwürfig, aber unflexibel. Napoleon impetuous and Alesssandro, obsequious, but inflexible. All’inizio Napoleone si scusò perche si sarebbe parlato solo in francese. Zuerst entschuldigte sich Napoleon, weil er nur Französisch sprechen würde. At first, Napoleon apologized for speaking only in French.

Alessandro ricordò che nelle sue vene scorreva anche sangue francese con riferimento agli avi dell’Imperatrice Madre. Alexander erinnerte sich, dass auch französisches Blut in Bezug auf die Vorfahren der Kaiserinmutter durch seine Adern floss. Russia e Francia si impegnarono a prestare un reciproco aiuto militare in un eventuale conflitto, difensivo o offensivo che fosse. Russland und Frankreich haben sich verpflichtet, in jedem Konflikt, ob defensiv oder offensiv, gegenseitige militärische Hilfe zu leisten. Russia and France undertook to provide mutual military aid in any conflict, whether defensive or offensive.

In altri termini Alessandro fu costretto a stipulare una alleanza militare con Napoleone. Mit anderen Worten, Alexander war gezwungen, ein militärisches Bündnis mit Napoleon einzugehen. In other words, Alexander was forced to enter into a military alliance with Napoleon. In seguito Napoleone guardò alla Russia come ad un fedele alleato. Later on, Napoleon looked to Russia as a faithful ally.

Il che sfata il pregiudizio circa una tensione sempre esistente fra i due paesi sin dall’inizio dell’era napoleonica. Dies beseitigt das Vorurteil über eine Spannung, die seit Beginn der napoleonischen Ära immer zwischen den beiden Ländern bestand. This dispels the prejudice about a tension that has always existed between the two countries since the beginning of the Napoleonic era. Invece una eventuale maretta ai vertici non  incrinava la convinzione che la Russia fosse il miglior alleato  della Francia. Auf der anderen Seite hat ein mögliches Anhalten an der Spitze nicht die Überzeugung untergraben, dass Russland Frankreichs bester Verbündeter war. On the other hand, an eventual march at the top did not undermine the belief that Russia was France's best ally.

E così soleva commentare: "I tedeschi faranno sempre e soltanto il loro gioco, mentre i russi sono teneri di cuore e possono ignorare i propri interessi per aiutare un amico..." Und so pflegte er zu kommentieren: "Die Deutschen werden immer und nur ihr Spiel spielen, während die Russen im Herzen zärtlich sind und ihre Interessen ignorieren können, um einem Freund zu helfen ..." And so he used to comment: "The Germans will always and only play their game, while the Russians are tender of heart and can ignore their interests to help a friend ..." In seguito alla Pace di Tilsit Alessandro fu costretto a solidarizzare con il blocco continentale dell’Inghilterra. Nach dem Frieden von Tilsit war Alexander gezwungen, mit der Kontinentalblockade Englands zu sympathisieren. Following the Peace of Tilsit Alexander was forced to sympathize with the continental block of England.

Non esiste nessun protocollo in merito, ma si sa che Alessandro promise che nessuna nave inglese sarebbe mai più entrata nel porto di Arcangelo. La viziata società di Pietroburgo non poteva fare a meno del caffè, della seta cinese e  delle spezie indiane che nel suo Evghenij Oneghin  Pusckin levò a rango di segno distintivo dei fasti voluttuosi dell’epoca. Quando Alessandro ne parlò a sua madre , lei si limitò ad una smorfia sprezzante. Als Alexander seiner Mutter davon erzählte, beschränkte sie sich auf eine verächtliche Grimasse. When Alessandro told his mother about it, she limited herself to a scornful grimace.

Ma Napoleone aveva avanzato un’altra tremenda richiesta: vietare ogni esportazione in Inghilterra delle corde di canapa di cui la Russia aveva quasi il monopolio nel mondo. Senza le corde di canapa la Royal Navy non avrebbe potuto più levare le vele, gettare le ancore o mettersi agli ormeggi. Alessandro aveva acconsentito ma Napoleone aveva voluto controllare di persona e per diversi mesi lesse i dispacci dei suoi informatori. Alexander hatte zugestimmt, aber Napoleon wollte persönlich einchecken und las mehrere Monate lang die Sendungen seiner Informanten. Alexander had agreed but Napoleon had wanted to check in person and for several months he read the dispatches of his informants.

Il caffè non arriva, la canapa non parte. Kaffee kommt nicht, Hanf fängt nicht an. The coffee does not arrive, the hemp does not start. Povero Napoleone! Poor Napoleon!

I mercanti russi ne sapevano una più del diavolo ed avevano trovato tutte le scorciatoie necessarie. Russische Kaufleute wussten mehr als der Teufel und hatten alle notwendigen Abkürzungen gefunden. The Russian merchants knew one more than the devil and had found all the necessary shortcuts. Gli affari si erano un pò ristretti, ma in comprenso erano aumentati i prezzi. Das Geschäft hatte sich etwas verengt, aber die Preise waren im Gegenzug gestiegen. The business had become somewhat limited, but the prices had increased. Tutto si poteva correggere, meno la sensazione di vergogna che Alessandro si era portato addosso dopo la pace di Tilsit. Alles konnte korrigiert werden, bis auf das Schamgefühl, das Alexander nach Tilsits Frieden getragen hatte. Everything could be corrected, minus the feeling of shame that Alexander had brought with him after the peace of Tilsit.

Nel momento del commiato egli aveva già deciso che non avrebbe rispettato nemmeno un punto di quell’accordo. At the time of the farewell he had already decided that he would not respect even one point of that agreement.

Ma gli rimase addosso la paura fisica che Napoleone gli faceva come uomo. Aber die körperliche Angst, die Napoleon ihn als Mann machte, blieb bei ihm. But the physical fear that Napoleon made him as a man remained on him. Alla guerra con la Francia rimanevano 815 giorni. The war with France remained 815 days.
