Antikens filosofi: Sokrates
Antike Philosophie: Sokrates
Ancient philosophy: Socrates
Filosofía antigua: Sócrates
Antik felsefe: Sokrates
With Socrates, a new chapter in Western philosophy begins.
When the earlier natural philosophers were mainly interested in explaining the world,
Socrates was interested in how people should best live their lives.
He was well versed in the earlier thinkers (often called pre-Socratics by posterity as they came before Socrates),
but believed that their theories – while interesting – were fundamentally meaningless.
What does it really matter if everything basically consists of atoms
if we are still ignorant about how to live our lives?
Philosophy should therefore examine issues of practical importance to people, Socrates said.
Vad är rättvisa? Vad är kunskap? Vad är sanning? Vad är mod? Detta är exempel på frågor av betydelse.
What is justice? What is knowledge? What is truth? What is courage? These are examples of important questions.
I don't have the answers to these questions myself, but I realize that no one else does either.
Socrates therefore came to use a method called dialectics.
The idea is that knowledge is born in discussions through arguments and counter-arguments.
The best method was, according to Socrates, the public conversation – an open dialogue for all who wanted to participate.
He made only three demands on his interlocutors:
They would speak from their own convictions - not repeat what others said.
De fick inte lägga fram motsägelsefulla argument.
They were not allowed to present contradictory arguments.
And they had to clearly define the words, expressions and concepts used.
He walked around the main square in Athens, the Agora,
and asked questions about morality and politics to anyone who would listen.
The discussions he started were of great interest and the approach was always the same.
Den som trodde sig veta svaret utmanades
Whoever thought they knew the answer was challenged
and Socrates subjected the answer to scrutiny by asking a series of follow-up questions.
Nästan alltid framkom det brister i det ursprungliga svaret
Almost always there were flaws in the original answer
varpå samtalspartnern reviderade resonemanget och försökte igen.
whereupon the interlocutor revised the reasoning and tried again.
Socratic thought became famous and it exposed the ignorance of people with claimed knowledge.
Although Socrates himself rarely gave any definitive answers (and if so it would have been part of his method
(emphasizing that any such response would also be subject to scrutiny) he stimulated an interest in philosophy.
He taught people to question everything, something that would also be his undoing.
Finally, he was arrested by the authorities, tired of being questioned all the time,
och han dömdes till döden.
and he was sentenced to death.
Although his friends and students offered to help him escape, Socrates refused
and talked about how citizens must obey the laws and the decisions of the authorities.
After taking leave of his wife and children, he spoke to his disciples about the immortality of the soul
and then emptied the poison cup given him by a soldier full of excuses.
There are lots of rumors and claims about Socrates,
among other things, he is said to have been small, fat and unusually ugly.
According to information, he was married to Xantippa - a very quarrelsome and angry woman,
but also the only one who could defeat Socrates in a debate.
He is also alleged to have been almost insensitive to cold and physical exertion,
and it is said that he could stand brooding for hours, completely unaware of the outside world.
Often he spoke to his inner voice, his "daimon", when he doubted that a course of action was really the right one.
A major problem with our knowledge of Socrates is that he never wrote anything.
Most of what we know about him comes from his students, mainly Plato.
But what is really reproduced of Socrates' thoughts in these writings
Ancak bu yazılarda Sokrates'in düşüncelerinden gerçekten yeniden üretilenler şunlardır
and what in turn is Plato's own teaching is something that is constantly debated.
In conclusion, Socrates has had an enormous influence on philosophy.
Not only that he defined many of the questions that philosophy still deals with today, e.g. moral philosophy,
his dialectical method and emphasis on critical thinking have permeated philosophy since the days of antiquity.
