Bruce era un genio del kung fu ma era anche un attore nato. Il primo film in cui fu protagonista venne distribuito proprio quando lasciò Hong Kong per l'America. Il Piccolo Drago (questo il suo nome d'arte) recitava nel film L'Orfano, un ruolo che aveva qualcosa in comune con la sua vera biografia, e prima di quella pellicola aveva già preso parte a una ventina di film. Amava moltissimo il cinema, e in America una delle sue occupazioni preferite sarebbe stata andare a vedere film d'azione, spesso in compagnia di belle ragazze, sempre diverse, almeno fino al matrimonio con Linda. Bruce guardava e imparava, e dentro di sé attendeva il momento giusto perché il mondo si accorgesse che era nata una nuova star.

La partecipazione al torneo di Long Beach, organizzato da Parker, gli valse la notorietà a Hollywood. In breve, William Dozier, un famoso produttore televisivo che già aveva raggiunto il successo con la serie Batman, venne a sapere di questo nuovo straordinario talento. Parker era stato talmente lungimirante da filmare l'esibizione di Bruce al torneo e all'appuntamento con Dozier portò il materiale registrato. Fu così che Bruce fece il suo ingresso nel cinema americano. Si trasferì a Los Angeles insieme a Linda e al neonato Brandon. Come abbiamo visto, Bruce dovette correre a Hong Kong all'improvviso, per la morte del padre. Al ritorno la collaborazione con Dozier si concretizzò: si trattava della serie Green Hornet, per la quale avrebbe vestito i panni del mitico Kato.

Mentre la produzione metteva a punto il nuovo progetto Bruce si ritrovò a Los Angeles, con quanto gli restava ancora dell'anticipo datogli da Dozier e con molto tempo libero. Così aprì una nuova palestra, aiutato da un altro amico destinato a entrare nella leggenda delle arti marziali: Dan Inosanto, vera colonna portante del Jeet Kune Do.

Il progetto andò in fumo per molte ragioni e i tre se ne ritornarono dopo alcune settimane trascorse invano tra sopralluoghi e vanitose esibizioni di Bruce, che non perdeva occasione per mostrare di cosa fosse capace. Era molto abile anche con i giochi di prestigio: era così veloce da far sparire monetine e altri oggetti sotto gli occhi esterrefatti degli astanti, riuniti in capannelli attorno a lui.

Una volta tornati in patria, Silliphant riuscì soltanto a far partecipare Bruce al film L'investigatore Marlowe, nella parte di uno scagnozzo. Silliphant era un allievo speciale per Bruce, e tra i due corsero amore e odio fino alla fine. Sarebbe anzi più corretto dire stima e rancore. Per ben due anni Silliphant aveva preso lezioni da Bruce, e all'inizio il maestro era stato piuttosto restio a prenderlo con sé, soprattutto per via dell'età – Silliphant aveva all'epoca quasi cinquant'anni. Silliphant aveva però il carattere del campione, e in gioventù era stato un ottimo schermidore. Dopo sei mesi di “corteggiamento” Silliphant era riuscito finalmente ad avere lezioni da Bruce, e questo nonostante Lee sapesse benissimo quanto Silliphant contasse a Hollywood.

Poco dopo l'esperienza assai deludente in India, Bruce partì per Hong Kong, dove girò il film che diede la svolta alla sua carriera, Il furore della Cina colpisce ancora. Quando partì Bruce si sentiva ancora lontanissimo dal proprio obiettivo. Non aveva idea, però, che la pellicola a cui stava per prendere parte lo avrebbe proiettato improvvisamente nell'empireo delle stelle del cinema.
