Gospel of Luke, Luc 11

Luc 11

Adveniat regnum tuum.

1 And it came to pass, that while he was praying in a certain place, when he had left, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 Et ait illis : Cum oratis, dicite : Pater, sanctificetur nomen tuum. 2 And he said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Adveniat regnum tuum. Thy kingdom come. 3 Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie. 4 Et dimitte nobis peccata nostra, siquidem et ipsi dimittimus omni debenti nobis. 4 And forgive us our sins, since we ourselves also forgive everyone who owes us. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem. And lead us not into temptation.

And he said to them: Which of you will have a friend, and will go to him in the middle of the night, and say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 since my friend is come to me on the way, and I have nothing to lay before him. He answered and said from within, "Don't bother me, the door is already locked, and my boys are in bed with me; I can't get up and give it to you." 8 Et si ille perseveraverit pulsans : dico vobis, etsi non dabit illi surgens eo quod amicus ejus sit, propter improbitatem tamen ejus surget, et dabit illi quotquot habet necessarios. 8 And if he shall persevere in knocking, I say to you, even if he will not rise up and give him, because he is his friend, yet on account of his dishonesty he will rise up, and will give him as many as he has necessary. 9 Et ego dico vobis : Petite, et dabitur vobis ; quærite, et invenietis ; pulsate, et aperietur vobis. 9 And I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; Seek and ye shall find ; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth: and he that seeketh findeth: and he that knocketh shall be opened. 11 Quis autem ex vobis patrem petit panem, numquid lapidem dabit illi ? 11 But who among you asks his father for bread, will he give him a stone? aut piscem, numquid pro pisce serpentem dabit illi ? 12 aut si petierit ovum, numquid porriget illi scorpionem ? 13 Si ergo vos, cum sitis mali, nostis bona data dare filiis vestris : quanto magis Pater vester de cælo dabit spiritum bonum petentibus se ?

14 Et erat ejiciens dæmonium, et illud erat mutum. 14 And he was casting out a demon, and he was dumb. And when he had cast out the demon, the mute spoke, and the multitudes were astonished. 15 And some of them said: In Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he casts out demons. 16 Et alii tentantes, signum de cælo quærebant ab eo. 16 And others, tempting, sought a sign from heaven from him. 17 But when he saw their thoughts, he said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself will be desolate, and house will fall upon house. 18 Si autem et Satanas in seipsum divisus est, quomodo stabit regnum ejus ? 18 But if Satan is divided among himself, how will his kingdom stand? quia dicitis in Beelzebub me ejicere dæmonia. because you say that I cast out demons in Beelzebub. 19 Si autem ego in Beelzebub ejicio dæmonia : filii vestri in quo ejiciunt ? 19 But if I cast out demons in Beelzebub: in whom do your children cast out? ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt. therefore they will be your judges. 20 Porro si in digito Dei ejicio dæmonia : profecto pervenit in vos regnum Dei. 20 Moreover, if I cast out a demon at the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man guards his court, those he owns are in peace. 22 But if a stronger man overcomes him, he shall take away all his weapons, in which he trusted, and distribute his spoils. 23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24 When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it walks through waterless places, seeking rest: and not finding it, it says: I will return to my house from whence I came. 25 And when he came, he found her cleaned with brooms, and adorned. 26 Then he goes, and takes with him seven other spirits, weaker than himself, and they enter and dwell there. Et fiunt novissima hominis illius pejora prioribus. And the latter of that man become worse than the former.

27 And it came to pass, when he had said these things: raising her voice, a certain woman from the crowd said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you suckled. 28 At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud. 28 But he said: Most blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

29 And he began to say to the gathering crowds: This generation is a wicked generation: it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30 For as Jonah was the sign of Nineveh, so shall the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south will rise up in judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon: and behold, there is more than Solomon here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise in judgment with this generation and will condemn it: because they repented of the preaching of Jonah, and behold, more than Jonah is here.

33 No one lights a lamp and places it in a secret place, or under a lampstand, but above the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye be simple, your whole body will be bright; but if it be wicked, your body will also be dark. 35 Vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est, tenebræ sint. 35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36 Si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit, non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum, erit lucidum totum, et sicut lucerna fulgoris illuminabit te. 36 If therefore your whole body is bright, not having any part of darkness, it will be all bright, and it will illuminate you like a lamp of lightning. 37 Et cum loqueretur, rogavit illum quidam pharisæus ut pranderet apud se. 37 And while he was speaking, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. Et ingressus recubuit. And he went in and reclined.

38 But the Pharisee began to reason within himself, saying why he had not been baptized before the meal. 39 And the Lord said to him: Now, you Pharisees, cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but what is inside of you is full of robbery and iniquity. Did not he who made what is without make also what is within? 41 Nevertheless, what remains, give alms: and behold, all things are clean for you. 42 But woe unto you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint, and rue, and every vegetable, and pass over the judgment and charity of God: but it was necessary to do these things, and not to omit them. 43 Væ vobis, pharisæis, quia diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis, et salutationes in foro. 43 Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the first seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplace. 44 Woe to you, because you are like monuments that cannot be seen, and the people walking on them do not know. 45 And one of the scribes answering said to him: Master, by saying these things you also insult us. 46 At ille ait : Et vobis legisperitis væ : quia oneratis homines oneribus, quæ portare non possunt, et ipsi uno digito vestro non tangitis sarcinas. 46 But he said: And woe to you lawyers, because you burden people with burdens that they cannot bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: your fathers killed them. 48 Profecto testificamini quod consentitis operibus patrum vestrorum : quoniam ipsi quidem eos occiderunt, vos autem ædificatis eorum sepulchra. 48 Indeed, bear witness that you consent to the works of your fathers: for indeed they killed them, but you built their sepulchres. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God said: I will send prophets and apostles to them, and they will kill and persecute them. who perished between the altar and the eden. Ita dico vobis, requiretur ab hac generatione. Yes, I tell you, he will be missed by this generation. 52 Woe to you, jurists, because you have taken away the key of knowledge: you yourselves did not enter, and you prevented those who were entering. 53 But when he said these things to them, the Pharisees and the scribes began to insist heavily, and to oppress his mouth about many things, 54 lying in wait for him, and seeking to take something from his mouth, in order to accuse him.
