Gospel of Luke, Luc 02

Luc 02

14 Gloria in altissimis Deo,

29 Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine,

secundum verbum tuum in pace :

30 quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum,

2 1 And it came to pass in those days, that an edict went forth from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be described. 2 This description was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria: 3 and they all went to report each one to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David, 5 that he might confess with Mary, who was betrothed to his wife, who was pregnant. 6 And it came to pass, when they were there, that the days were filled for him to give birth. 7 And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger: for there was no room for them in the inn. 8 Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes, et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum. 8 And the shepherds were in the same region watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock.

14 Gloria in altissimis Deo,

et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis. and on earth peace to men of good will.

15 And it came to pass that the angels departed from them into heaven: the shepherds spoke to one another: Let us pass on to Bethlehem, and let us see this word which has come to pass, which the Lord has shown us. 16 Et venerunt festinantes : et invenerunt Mariam, et Joseph, et infantem positum in præsepio. 17 And those who saw knew the word which had been spoken to them concerning this child. 18 Et omnes qui audierunt, mirati sunt : et de his quæ dicta erant a pastoribus ad ipsos. 19 Maria autem conservabat omnia verba hæc, conferens in corde suo. 19 But Mary preserved all these words, confiding them in her heart.

29 Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine,

secundum verbum tuum in pace :

30 quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum,

31 quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum :

32 lumen ad revelationem gentium, 32 light for the revelation of the nations,

et gloriam plebis tuæ Israël. and the glory of your people Israel.

33 And his father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold, he is set here for the downfall and resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign to whom he will be contradicted: 35 and a sword will pass through your soul so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36 And Anna was a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she had advanced in many days, and had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity. 37 And this widow up to the age of eighty-four: who did not leave the temple, serving night and day with fastings and supplications. 38 And this, coming at the very hour, he confessed to the Lord: and he spoke of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Israel. 39 And when they had finished everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their city of Nazareth.

40 And the child grew, and was strengthened, full of wisdom: and the grace of God was in him. 41 And his parents used to go all the years to Jerusalem, on the solemn day of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, when they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast day, 43 and when the days were over, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and his parents did not know him. 44 Thinking he was in the company, went a day looking for him among relatives and friends. 45 And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him. 46 Et factum est, post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, audientem illos, et interrogantem eos. 46 And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them, and questioning them. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his prudence and his answers. 48 Et videntes admirati sunt. 48 And those who saw them were astonished. And his mother said to him: Son, what have you done to us like this? ecce pater tuus et ego dolentes quærebamus te. Behold, thy father and I have sought thee in sorrow. 49 Et ait ad illos : Quid est quod me quærebatis ? 49 And he said to them: What is it that you were looking for me? nesciebatis quia in his quæ Patris mei sunt, oportet me esse ? Did you not know that I must be in the things that are my Father's? 50 Et ipsi non intellexerunt verbum quod locutus est ad eos. 50 And they themselves did not understand the word that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth: and he was subject to them. Et mater ejus conservabat omnia verba hæc in corde suo. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. 52 Et Jesus proficiebat sapientia, et ætate, et gratia apud Deum et homines. 52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in favor with God and men.
