(I mean) it's, it's a really interesting question because you might think that you'll be better off by avoiding anything dangerous, anything risky. （我的意思是）這是一個非常有趣的問題，因為你可能認為避免任何危險的事情會讓你過得更好。 Like for me personally, (um) several years ago, I had the opportunity to move to Japan, but (you know), my, my life in the US was pretty good. 就像我個人一樣，（嗯）幾年前，我有機會搬到日本，但（你知道），我在美國的生活非常好。 (You know), I had (um) I actually owned my own condo right. （你知道），我（嗯）我實際上擁有自己的公寓權利。

Lindsay:

Wow.

Interesting.

Gabby:

Yeah.

So I had that investment and I had a good job. 所以我有了這筆投資並且找到了一份好工作。 (Um) I was teaching Spanish at a middle and high school. （嗯）我在一所國中和高中教西班牙文。 (Um) and life was pretty good. I had my friends, (you know), life was fine. So why would I take the risk of (like) leaving all of that and going to Japan? 那我為什麼要冒著離開這一切去日本的風險呢？

Lindsay:

Why did you?

Gabby:

You know what. I wanted adventure and I wanted to grow as a teacher and as a person just see what's out there. Wow.

That was brave!

Gabby:

(Um) yeah and it was the right decision. （嗯）是的，這是正確的決定。 (I mean) you worry about the risk, but really I learned so much (um), (you know) language, culture. （我的意思是）你擔心風險，但實際上我學到了很多（嗯），（你知道）語言、文化。 I learned a lot from my job and my colleagues and I, I'm a different, better person for it. 我從工作中學到了很多東西，我和我的同事也因此成為了一個不同的、更好的人。

Lindsay:

And what would have been the cost of avoiding that risk, of staying home? 避免這種風險、待在家裡會付出什麼代價？

Gabby:

Well, my life would've been fine. 嗯，我的生活本來就很好。 I wouldn't have had any problem per se. 我本身不會有任何問題。 But I wouldn't be the same person I am now. 但我不會是現在的我了。 I wouldn't have gained the skills that I can share with our listeners. 我不會獲得可以與聽眾分享的技能。 (I mean) not to say, (you know), I'm so great and (you know) I'm… But, but really I feel like I have more to share now from my experience. （我的意思是）不是說，（你知道），我太棒了，（你知道）我……但是，但實際上，我覺得我現在有更多可以分享的經驗。

Lindsay:

Yeah.

So I also had kind of deeper voice inside of me. 所以我內心也有一種更深沉的聲音。 I was living in New York. I'd found an amazing rent controlled apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and that was something that you don't leave when you have that kind of (uh) affordable rent, affordable apartment. 我在曼哈頓上東區發現了一套令人驚嘆的租金管制公寓，當你擁有那種（呃）負擔得起的租金、負擔得起的公寓時，你就不會離開。 But I also had that deeper voice saying I needed to see Latin America. 但我也用低沉的聲音說我需要看看拉丁美洲。 So I just decided to, (you know), get – not sign my lease for the next year and just go. 所以我決定，（你知道），不簽明年的租約，然後就走。 I took off and I traveled in Latin America for a year and I also wanted to learn Spanish. 我出發去拉丁美洲旅行了一年，我還想學西班牙語。 That was really important to me. 這對我來說真的很重要。 (Um) and so I listened to that voice and I did it. （嗯）所以我聽了那個聲音，然後就這麼做了。 But if I hadn't done it, I would've just kept living in that apartment in Manhattan. 但如果我不這麼做，我就會繼續住在曼哈頓的那間公寓裡。 I still would probably be in that apartment now… 我現在可能還會在那間公寓…

Gabby: Wow.

Lindsay:

…and I wouldn't be able to speak Spanish. ……而且我不會說西班牙語。

Right.

Lindsay:

(Um) I wouldn't have made amazing friendships and relationships in Latin America. （嗯）我不會在拉丁美洲建立令人驚嘆的友誼和關係。 And now that I'm back in the US, I can connect with people from those countries on a level that I never, (you know)…would have otherwise. 現在我回到了美國，我可以與來自這些國家的人們建立聯繫，這是我（你知道）……否則無法做到的。

It's life changing.

Lindsay:

Yeah, absolutely.

Gabby:

Yeah.

So sometimes taking risks is for the better. 所以有時候冒險是為了更好。 And we just want to encourage you guys with your language learning, with your travels, and in your professional life to take some calculated risks. 我們只是想鼓勵你們在語言學習、旅行和職業生涯中承擔一些經過計算的風險。
