Nous eûmes quelques difficultés à trouver la bonne clé sur le trousseau, mais parvînmes à ouvrir la porte. Nous nous attendions à quelque chose de très déplaisant, car en ouvrant la porte, un air malodorant avait commencé à s'exhaler par l'entrebâillement, mais personne n'était préparé à une odeur aussi nauséabonde. Aucun de mes compagnons n'avait jamais approché le Comte d'aussi près que moi, et lorsque je l'avais vu, soit il était en période de jeûne dans ses appartements, soit il était gorgé de sang frais dans un bâtiment en ruines où pouvait pénétrer l'air frais du dehors. Lorsque nous commençâmes à examiner attentivement l'endroit, le Professeur nous dit : « La première chose à faire, c'est de voir combien de caisses il reste ; nous devons donc fouiller chaque recoin, chaque ouverture et chaque anfractuosité pour y chercher des indices de ce qu'ont pu devenir celles qui manquent. » Un seul regard nous suffit pour en déterminer le nombre, car les caisses de terre étaient très encombrantes, et on ne pouvait s'y tromper.

Sur les cinquante, il n'en restait que vingt-neuf ! Soudain, je frissonnai : je vis Lord Godalming se retourner d'un seul coup et observer le passage qui se trouvait au-delà de la porte voûtée, et mon cœur s'arrêta. Là-bas, il me semblait voir, nous observant depuis les ténèbres, les traits du visage maléfique du Comte, l'arête de son nez, ses yeux rouges, ses lèvres rouges, et sa terrifiante pâleur. Un instant après, toutefois, Lord Goldaming dit : « J'avais cru voir un visage, mais ce n'étaient que des ombres », et il reprit ses recherches. Je dirigeai ma lampe vers le passage, et y pénétrai. Des chiens, derrière l'établissement du Dr. Seward, se mirent à hurler, et après une minute, trois terriers surgirent au coin du bâtiment. Inconsciemment, nous nous étions tous rapprochés de la porte, et dans ce mouvement je remarquai que la couche de poussière avait été foulée : les caisses qui avaient disparu étaient donc sorties par cette porte. Mais, même si à peine une minute s'était écoulée, les nombre de rats avait augmenté de façon alarmante. Ils semblaient déferler en masse dans la chapelle, à tel point que la lumière des lampes, se reflétant sur leurs corps noirs grouillants et leurs yeux brillants et maléfiques, donnait l'impression d'un essaim de lucioles. Les chiens se précipitèrent, mais il s'arrêtèrent soudain sur le seuil et se mirent à grogner, puis, levant le museau tous les trois en même temps, commencèrent à hurler de la façon la plus lugubre. Les rats étaient maintenant des milliers, et nous sortîmes. Nous sentîmes tous le courage revenir. Etait-ce le fait d'avoir purifié l'air en ouvrant la porte, ou le soulagement de ne plus être enfermés après cette terrible expérience ? En tout cas, la terreur nous quitta comme on ôte un manteau, et notre présence en ce lieu perdit un peu de son caractère sinistre, même si notre résolution demeurait toujours aussi ferme. Nous refermâmes la porte extérieure et la verrouillâmes, puis, emmenant les chiens, entreprîmes d'explorer la maison elle-même. Nous ne trouvâmes rien de particulier, si ce n'est de la poussière dans des quantités inimaginables, et complètement vierge, à part les traces que j'avais moi-même laissées lors de ma première visite. A aucun moment les chiens ne montrèrent le moindre signe de nervosité, et même lorsque nous retournâmes à la chapelle, ils frétillaient d'excitation comme s'ils sortaient chasser le lapin dans la forêt en plein été. Le ciel s'éclaircissait déjà à l'est quand nous sortîmes par la porte principale. Le Dr. Van Helsing avait ôté du trousseau la clé de cette porte, qu'il avait convenablement verrouillée, et avait ensuite mis la clé dans sa poche. « Jusqu'ici », dit-il, « cette nuit nous a été très favorable. Rien de grave ne nous est arrivé comme j'aurais pu le craindre, et nous savons maintenant combien il manque de caisses. Je suis vraiment heureux que les tâches qu'il nous reste à accomplir, et même nos délibérations, lui soient épargnées. C'est une pression trop forte pour une femme. Ce n'était pas mon opinion au début, mais j'en sais maintenant davantage ; je suis donc heureux qu'il en soit ainsi. Elle pourrait être effrayée ne serait-ce que d'entendre certaines choses. Mais elle ne doit pas se rendre compte qu'il y a dissimulation, ou ce serait encore pire. En conséquence, notre travail doit être pour elle comme un livre scellé, du moins tant que nous ne sommes pas en mesure de lui dire que tout est fini, et que la terre a été délivrée d'un monstre des enfers. Je sais bien qu'il sera difficile de garder le silence, tant elle et moi nous faisons confiance, mais je dois être inflexible, et demain je ne lui révèlerai rien des évènements de cette nuit ; je refuserai d'en dire quoi que ce soit.
