Je suppose que c'était une réminiscence de ma terrible expérience en Transylvanie que ces lieux sinistres réveillaient en moi. Sans doute ce sentiment était-il partagé par mes compagnons : en effet je remarquai qu'ils se retournaient au moindre bruit et à chaque nouvelle ombre qu'ils apercevaient, comme je le faisais moi-même. Tout l'endroit était recouvert d'une couche de poussière qui semblait atteindre, sur le sol, plusieurs pouces d'épaisseur, sauf là où nous pouvions voir de récentes traces de pas laissées par des souliers cloutés. Les murs étaient couverts d'un duvet de poussière, et dans les coins s'accumulaient de grosses toiles d'araignées sur lesquelles la saleté s'était accumulée, et qui, déchirées sous leur propre poids, ressemblaient à des tentures en lambeaux. Sur une table dans le hall, se trouvait un gros trousseau de clés, portant chacune une étiquette jaunie par le temps.
