Enfin, nous arrivâmes au mur du cimetière, et passâmes par-dessus. Avec quelques difficultés – car il faisait très sombre, et l'endroit nous était totalement étranger - nous trouvâmes le tombeau des Westenra. Le Professeur prit la clé, ouvrit la porte grinçante, puis, se tenant là debout, et mû par une politesse inconsciente, il m'invita à passer devant lui. Il y avait une ironie savoureuse dans ce geste qui me laissait courtoisement la préséance, en une occasion aussi monstrueuse. Mon compagnon me suivit immédiatement, et referma la porte avec précaution, non sans s'être assuré qu'il s'agissait bien d'une serrure à ressort : sinon, nous nous serions retrouvés en grande difficulté. Le tombeau, quand il était décoré de fleurs fraîches, était déjà suffisamment sinistre et repoussant, mais maintenant, après quelques jours, avec les fleurs qui pendaient, ternes et mortes, leur couleur blanche virant au roux et le vert devenant brun, avec les araignées et les insectes qui y régnaient à nouveau, avec la pierre décolorée par le temps, le mortier incrusté de poussière, avec le fer rouillé et humide, le cuivre et l'argent terni, qui reflétaient la faible lueur de la chandelle, l'effet était plus sordide et plus désespérant que tout ce qu'on pourrait imaginer. A cette vue, on ne pouvait s'empêcher de penser que la vie – la vie animale – n'était pas la seule chose qui puisse disparaître à jamais. Van Helsing travailla avec méthode. Tenant sa chandelle de manière à pouvoir lire les inscriptions sur les cercueils, répandant en même des taches -blanches de cire qui se solidifiait dès qu'elle touchait le métal, il identifia le cercueil de Lucy. Fouillant à nouveau dans sa sacoche, il en sortit un tournevis. « Qu'allez-vous faire ? » demandai-je. « Je vais ouvrir le cercueil. Peut-être alors me croirez-vous. » Et aussitôt, il se mit à ôter les vis, puis il souleva le couvercle, révélant ainsi la caisse de plomb qui se trouvait en-dessous. Je pus à peine le supporter : cela me semblait un affront à la morte, comme si on avait voulu lui enlever ses vêtements pendant son sommeil quand elle était vivante. Je saisis la main du Professeur pour l'arrêter. Il me dit simplement : « Vous allez voir. », et cherchant à nouveau dans son sac, en sortit une petite scie. Puis, enfonçant d'un coup sec le tournevis dans le plomb, ce qui me fit tressaillir, il y pratiqua un petit trou, qui fut cependant suffisant pour qu'il pût y introduire la pointe de la scie. Je m'étais attendu à une émanation de gaz, le cadavre se trouvant là depuis une semaine. Nous autres médecins, qui devons connaître les dangers auxquels nous sommes exposés, sommes habitués à ce genre de choses, et je reculai vers la porte. Mais le Professeur ne s'arrêta pas un instant : il scia le cercueil de plomb sur deux pieds environ vers le bas, puis en travers, puis vers le bas de l'autre côté ; enfin, prenant à deux mains la partie ainsi découpée, il la tordit vers le bas du cercueil. Passant ensuite sa chandelle par l'ouverture, il me fit signe de regarder. Je m'approchai et regardai. Le cercueil était vide. C'était assurément une surprise pour moi, et j'en fus fort choqué, mais Van Helsing, lui, ne fit aucun mouvement. Il était maintenant plus sûr de lui que jamais, et conforté dans sa volonté d'accomplir sa tâche. « Etes-vous convaincu maintenant, ami John ? » demanda-t-il.

Nous ouvrîmes la porte et sortîmes, puis il la referma et la verrouilla. Il me tendit la clé : « Voulez-vous la garder ? Peut-être serez-vous alors convaincu ? » Je ris tandis que je lui faisais signe de la garder – ce n'était pas un rire très amical, je dois dire. « Une clé, cela ne veut rien dire », dis-je. « On peut faire un double, et de toute façon il n'est pas très difficile de crocheter une serrure comme celle-ci. » Il ne dit rien, mais remit la clé dans sa poche. Alors, il me demanda de surveiller une partie du cimetière, pendant que lui surveillerait l'autre. Je me postai derrière un if, et je pus voir sa silhouette sombre disparaître derrière les pierres tombales et les arbres qui la cachèrent à mon regard. Ce fut une veille solitaire. Juste après avoir pris position, j'entendis une horloge sonner minuit au loin, puis une heure, puis deux heures. J'étais transi, j'étais nerveux, et j'en voulais au Professeur de m'avoir entraîné dans une pareille aventure, et à moi-même d'avoir accepté. J'avais trop froid et trop sommeil pour être véritablement vigilant, mais je n'étais pas assez épuisé pour abandonner ma faction ; ce furent donc des heures pénibles et misérables. Soudain, me retournant, je crus avoir aperçu comme une forme blanche, qui se déplaçait d'un if à l'autre, du côté du cimetière le plus éloigné du tombeau, et au même moment, une masse sombre arriva de l'endroit où était posté le Professeur, et se précipita vers elle. Alors, je me déplaçai à mon tour, mais il me fallait contourner des pierres tombales, sur lesquelles je finis par trébucher. Le ciel était couvert, et quelque part au loin, un coq matinal chanta. Un peu plus loin, derrière un rideau de genévriers qui marquait le sentier conduisant à l'église, une silhouette blanchâtre se glissait en direction du tombeau. Celui-ci était caché par des arbres, et je ne pus voir où la silhouette avait disparu. J'entendis alors qu'on se déplaçait à l'endroit où j'avais d'abord aperçu la silhouette, et m'approchant, je trouvai le Professeur, qui tenait dans ses bras un petit enfant. Quand il me vit, il tendit l'enfant vers moi, et me dit : « Etes-vous convaincu, maintenant ? » « Non » dis-je, d'un ton que je savais agressif. « Ne voyez-vous pas cet enfant ? » « Oui, c'est un enfant, mais qui l'a amené ici ? Et est-il blessé ? » « Nous allons voir », dit le Professeur, et un instant après, nous étions sortis du cimetière. Il portait toujours l'enfant endormi. Une fois parvenus à une certaine distance, il alla vers un bosquet, gratta une allumette, et inspecta la gorge de l'enfant. Celle- ci ne montrait aucune égratignure, aucune marque d'aucune sorte.

« N'avais-je pas raison ? » demandai-je triomphalement. « Nous sommes arrivés juste à temps » dit le Professeur, soulagé. Nous devions à présent décider ce que nous allions faire de l'enfant. Si nous le conduisions au poste de police, il nous faudrait rendre compte de nos activités de la nuit, ou, tout au moins, il nous faudrait déclarer dans quelles circonstances nous avions trouvé cet enfant. Alors, nous décidâmes finalement de l'emmener dans le parc d'Hampstead Heath : dès que nous entendrions un policeman approcher, nous le laisserions là où il ne pourrait manquer de le découvrir, et nous rentrerions ensuite chez nous aussi vite que possible. Tout se passa très bien : dès que nous arrivâmes au parc, nous entendîmes le pas lourd d'un policeman ; nous déposâmes alors l'enfant sur le chemin et nous cachâmes. Nous attendîmes qu'il l'aperçoive, à la lumière de la lanterne qu'il balançait d'avant en arrière. Nous entendîmes son cri de surprise, puis nous retirâmes en silence. Par chance, nous pûmes trouver un cab près des Spaniards, et retournâmes en ville. Je ne parviens pas à dormir, alors je fais cet enregistrement. Mais je dois essayer de prendre quelques heures de sommeil : Van Helsing vient me chercher à midi. Il prétend que je dois me joindre à lui pour une nouvelle expédition. 27 septembre. Il était deux heures lorsque nous trouvâmes une bonne opportunité pour une nouvelle tentative. Les funérailles commencées à midi étaient toutes terminées, et les derniers retardataires des familles s'étaient éloignés tranquillement, lorsque, observant prudemment depuis un bouquet d'aulnes, nous vîmes le sacristain sortir en refermant le portail à clé derrière lui. Nous savions alors que nous serions tranquilles jusqu'au matin si nous le souhaitions, mais le Professeur me dit que nous en aurions pour une heure tout au plus. Une fois de plus, je ressentis l'horrible réalité des choses, où tout effort d'imagination semblait déplacé, et j'étais pleinement conscient des sanctions légales que nous encourrions dans notre tâche impie. Par ailleurs, je trouvais tout ceci parfaitement inutile. C'avait été monstrueux d'ouvrir un cercueil de plomb pour vérifier si une femme morte depuis presque une semaine était effectivement morte, et c'était maintenant une pure folie d'ouvrir la tombe une nouvelle fois, alors que nous savions positivement, de par le témoignage de nos propres yeux, que le cercueil était vide. Mais je me contentai de hausser les épaules, et gardai le silence, car quand Van Helsing avait décidé quelque chose, il s'y tenait, quoi qu'on lui dise. Il prit la clé, ouvrit la porte, et, à nouveau, me proposa avec courtoisie de passer le premier. L'endroit n'était pas aussi terrifiant que la nuit précédente, mais Dieu ! il était indiciblement triste quand le soleil y pénétra. Van Helsing se dirigea vers le cercueil de Lucy, et je le suivis.
