#8 Federico in Buenos Aires

Buenas noches, Federico.

Buenas noches.

¿Cómo estás?

Bien.

¿Y usted?

Y a qué hora…

Perdón.

No, disculpa.

Yo digo…

No.

Fui totalmente… no sabiendo casi nada.

Si. Es un tipo de origen irlandés. Tanto no sabía.

Muchas gracias a usted.

Ok. Adiós.

Buenas noches, Federico. Good evening, Federico.

Buenas noches. Goodnight.

¿Cómo estás? How are you?

Bien. Well.

¿Y usted? And you?

Muy bien, gracias. Very well thanks.

Very well thanks. ¿Dónde está Quilmes? And ... well, Federico, you live in ... in Argentina, in a ... a place called Quilmes.

Where is Quilmes?

Y tú eres estudiante de idiomas… ó de interpret… ¿de qué? Quilmes is in the ... suroes ... southeast of Buenos Aires, of the federal capital, and it's ... it's called Quilmes because there's also the brewery called Quilmes.

De intérprete de inglés. And you are a student of languages ... or of interpret ... of what?

Of interpreter of English.

Aha, but you speak more languages than English and Spanish, you also speak other languages.

Yes, I've always liked languages, since ... since I was a kid ... I mean ... I do not remember ... my first language I learned was French ... I think at eight years old, more or less.

And how, to the school, or did I have friends, or why ... I started learning French?

I don't know, I really liked to travel and… at the time I learned… I always learned English, I always went… to an English teacher, or… I will have been studying English for ten years, and then it will have been with the university career of… as a translator and interpreter English, but ... no ... I always liked it, it's like a ... well ... like all polyglots, a language never ... is never enough.

Si. Yes, but ... you ... you ... went ... in an exchange as a student to Hong Kong.

¿Durante cuánto tiempo? Yes.

Un año. During how much time?

Un año. Un año, sí. One year. Si. ¿Cómo fue esta experiencia? Disculpa. Sorry.

The interesting thing about the exchange was that you could live as if you were a… a native, because you go to… to school, you live with a host family, it is really a cultural exchange.

How was this experience?

¿Cómo te gustaba la… la comida chinesa… cantonesa? Excuse.

The interesting thing about the exchange was that you could live as if you were a ... a native, because you go to ... to school, live with a host family, it's really a cultural exchange.

Pero cada día en la familia… ¿qué… qué… qué… qué había para… para comer? Even ... even ... the kitchen.

How did you like the ... Chinese food ... Cantonese?

There were some dishes that I liked a lot, and others I did not, not so much.

But every day in the family ... what ... what ... what ... what was there for ... to eat?

Always ... always the ... the kitchen ... chinesa or other things too?

Sí. I think that only when we celebrated birthdays there was pizza or maybe a birthday cake, if not, it was always Chinese food.

And we did not eat beef either, because they had Buddhist beliefs and then no ... beef was not eaten, it was just fish, chicken and pork. And ... you when you went to Hong Kong, every day ... you went to school or what ... what did you do?

Well, it depends on the country, because in Japan too... which is in the northern hemisphere, the year starts in March, April, so it's the same as in Hong Kong.

I live in the southern hemisphere, and classes start from March to December, and summer vacations are from December to ... to March. There are three months of summer vacations, after March to December are the classes, and in the northern hemisphere classes are different in the school ... it is from September to July, I think, or June ... I do not remember.

Sí. ... de educación. Well, it is according to the country, because in Japan too ... which is in the northern hemisphere, the year starts in March, April, then it is the same as in Hong Kong. Sí. ¿Y como…? Yes, and how…? Y a qué hora… But here in Canada it is September until June.

Perdón. But in Hong Kong the English model is usually followed more ...

No, disculpa.

Yo digo… I say… How did you learn Chinese, because… I didn't have any… well… I hadn't studied at school before going to Hong Kong, I think?

No.

Fui totalmente… no sabiendo casi nada. Ich ging völlig... und wusste fast nichts. I went totally… knowing almost nothing. Sabía decir “nǐ hǎo” y nada más. And at what time… And what helped me a lot to learn the language is that I got along very well with my host parents and... but they didn't speak English, they didn't know how to speak English, so....

Bueno, eso es una ventaja. Nun, das ist ein Vorteil. No sorry.

I say ... How did you do to learn Chinese, why ... I did not have any ... well ... I had not studied him at school before going to Hong Kong, I think?

Sí. Claro. Do not. I totally went ... knowing almost nothing.

He knew how to say "nǐ hǎo" and nothing else. And what helped me a lot to learn the language is that I got along very well with my host parents and ... but they did not speak English, they could not speak English, so ...

Well, that's an advantage.

... it was quite ... yes, it was an advantage and sometimes a disadvantage.

Clear.

Si. Sí. Pero… And… then… well, I went to the Hong Kong library, I borrowed some books to learn Cantonese, a dictionary and… when I was in school, I learned words and words, a lot of vocabulary I had to learn. pero la persona que escucha, entiende por el contexto, aún si dices algo que… si… aber die Person, die zuhört, versteht aus dem Kontext, auch wenn Sie etwas sagen, das... wenn... The second challenge was to speak it well, why not ... many times not ... they do not understand you if you pronounce the tones badly.

And ... later in the house I practiced because they clearly spoke to me as we are speaking, but in Cantonese, that is, no ... even if I did not want to speak Cantonese, I had to speak it the same.

And ... to learn the tones, how did you do? Learn ... you learned ... well ... every ... for every word, the tone you run ... corresponds to this word or ... only in listening and imitating ... well ... gradually, getting used to ... that way of speaking with intonation? What ... what was it ... was it the stages or the way to learn this ... this way of speaking ... this way of speaking that does not exist in our languages? It was quite difficult with the tones, well, there are tonal errors in Cantonese that ... if you say it wrong ends up being an insult, for example. Eso me costó bastante… That cost me a lot ...

Como cuando… si…

Por ejemplo… But ... but the person who listens, understands the context, even if you say something ... if ...

Es bastante difícil… Of course, many times ... they understood the context, but we learned the tones because the first week we arrived in Hong Kong all the exchange students, who were from many countries, had a week-long Cantonese class, they taught the basics , the tones, more or less was an introduction.

What cost me the most in Cantonese was not so much the tones but ... some words that ... for example ... that I'm not used to, like ... how do I speak Spanish ... for example, one says ... have ... I can not think of ... well, for example, " Ginger "in Cantonese is" jiāng ".

Sí, sí. And that aspiration that when one ... when one speaks ... it cost me a lot.

If you do not say it like that, it means something else. In Cantonese when you do the ... the transcription is with "K" when it is ... when it expires, and with ... I think "G" is when you do not ... you do not emit air. That cost me a lot ... Cela m'a coûté cher ... Like when ... yes ... For example…

Sí, es verdad. It is quite difficult ...

It is quite difficult ... the Cantonese in that aspect.

But, for me, for example, I ... I started with Mandarin, and for a long time I didn't want to learn Cantonese, I thought it was too difficult with nine tones. But one day I read a book that said that with only six tones it is enough, enough, already ... enough is enough. So, this one ... with this one ... I was not afraid anymore, so I started ... to ... to study Cantonese, I did not have much ... much difficulty, so I think that one's attitude is very important.

If you are not afraid, then you can learn more quickly, and if you are afraid that ... that ... that ... is going ... I do not know ... say ... say nonsense and not want to talk ... well ... this ... this is ... it is a great disadvantage in the learning ... from ... of languages.

But tell me, a totally different question: here in Vancouver for example, we have many Chinese, and people from many different countries, and I know that Argentina is a country ... a country of immigrants like Canada.

If true.

In Arge ... in Buenos Aires for example, do you also have neighborhoods ... where there is a concentration of people of ... I do not know ... of ... of different ... different countries?

Si. Es un tipo de origen irlandés. Yes. He's a guy of Irish origin. Tanto no sabía. So viel wusste ich nicht. What I thought when I was in Hong Kong or around when I returned to Argentina is that ... they said that Hong Kong is a ... a very cosmopolitan place, where there are many people of many nationalities.

There are people from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, there are many immigrants.

And you know that in Argentina too, because there are Italians, Spaniards, Poles, Germans, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Armenians - there is a very important community of Armenians - I think it is a ... also of Jews ... it is ... one of the most of the world that Argentina has. Ahí hay muchos extranjeros. There are also Arabs, Turks, there are many, yes, there are many, and of all bordering countries as well.

Pero… Aquí… ¿si? And these people have a ... well ... a ... a sense of identity of Argentina or of their country ... ancestral ... everything ... this world is considered Argentine ... what is ... what is ... the ... this sense of identity that exists in ... in ... in Argentina? I do not know if people are ... people ... do not have a sense of nationality, for example, in mainland China, or in other countries that really is patriotism, but, as ... all immigrants adapted very well to Argentina, love food, and ... if they do not tell you that they are Armenians or ... or Poles, you think they are Argentines ... no ... it's not like ... they isolate themselves from the country.

Tienen tintorerías, y los chinos tienen supermercados. Well, I think this is inevitable, it's the same here in Canada, with the according to ... the second generation, or the third generation, the ... people no longer make distinctions according to the origin of ... of the person.

Pero éste es la primera generación… I know, for example, that ... that ... of the ... most important poets in the history of Argentina is called Benito Lynch, is not it?

It is a type of Irish origin.

I did not know so much.

Ah, ¿de Fujian? No, I do not know, I read it ... I read this one ... for example, in Chile also one of the parents of the ... country is called O'Higgens.

Yes Yes Yes Yes. ... and, since many don't... they don't integrate into the community... A menos… menos que los otros. Zumindest... weniger als die anderen. There are many foreigners there.

But how… they want to go to the United States after being in Argentina, I think it's to get the Visa, I don't know very well… this… and they speak Spanish with difficulty… sometimes you don't understand a lot.

For example, something interesting about immigrants is that everyone has their business, for example, the Japanese have dry cleaners ... where ... yes, well, dry cleaners.

They have dry cleaners, and the Chinese have supermarkets.

There can always be exceptions but generally ... it is like that.

Sí, sí. Bueno, hemos hablado bastante mucho. Ja, ja. Nun, wir haben viel geredet. Yes Yes. Well, we've talked quite a lot. Espero que podemos hacerlo otra vez. Ich hoffe, wir können es wieder tun. … Probably that the second generation are already lawyers or… or I don't know, they work in… in… in other… other… sectors. As for the Chinese, the majority are from Fujian. Ah, from Fujian? Yes.

No… se entiende perfectamente como habla. "Fukien" as they say in Cantonese ...

Ok.

Muchas gracias. ... and, as many do not ... do not integrate into the community ... Muchas gracias por el tiempo. Unless ... less than the others.

Muchas gracias a usted.

Ok. Adiós. But as ... they want to go to the United States after being in Argentina, I think it's to get the Visa, very well I do not know ... this ... and they speak Spanish with difficulty ... sometimes a lot is not understood.
