[Vancouver, Canada] — LingQ, the powerful language learning app developed by polyglot Steve Kaufmann, has launched Vietnamese and Khmer, increasing its list of supported languages to 49.

LingQ Launches Khmer and Vietnamese

Vietnamese is spoken natively by roughly 85 million people worldwide, including in significant diasporas in the US, France, Australia and Canada. A member of the Austroasiatic language family, Vietnamese has six tones making pronunciation vital in conveying meaning. The Vietnamese lexicon has borrowed vocabulary from Chinese, English and French over the years, highlighting its diversity.

Khmer, also known as Cambodian, is spoken by roughly 13 million people in Cambodia and around one million more in neighboring Vietnam and Thailand. Like Vietnamese, Khmer is a member of the Austroasiatic language family and has been influenced greatly by Sanskrit and Pali through Hinduism and Buddhism. The language is written in Khmer script and has 33 consonants and its own numerals.

Offering an affordable cost of living, rich culture, and appealing climates, both Vietnam and Cambodia are popular destinations for digital nomads,” said LingQ co-founder Mark Kaufmann. “Once there, the opportunity to get more from the experience by learning the language should be very motivating. LingQ now gives the possibility for digital nomads to immerse themselves in Vietnamese and Khmer content and integrate better into their host country to get much more from the experience.”

As with all languages offered on LingQ, Vietnamese and Khmer learners will have access to interactive lessons, personalized vocabulary tools, a community of engaged native speakers and learners as well as the latest AI-powered tools for a comprehensive, immersive experience. Learners will have the opportunity to gain proficiency through reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

The Vietnamese and Khmer Mini Stories courses of lessons feature everyday situations and the vocabulary and grammatical structures needed to take beginners to the intermediate level. The Mini Stories course is available in all 49 supported languages on LingQ. Learners in the LingQ forum have described the course as “painless grammar study” and reported going from kindergarten level to understanding top podcasts in their target language.
