Actus Apostolorum (Acts of the Apostles), Acts 16

Acts 16

14 Et quædam mulier nomine Lydia, purpuraria civitatis Thyatirenorum, colens Deum, audivit : cujus Dominus aperuit cor intendere his quæ dicebantur a Paulo.

Acts 16 Akte 16 Acts 16 Hechos 16

16 1 Pervenit autem Derben et Lystram. 16 Und er kam nach Derbe und Lystra. 16 And he came to Derbe and Lystra. Et ecce discipulus quidam erat ibi nomine Timotheus, filius mulieris Judææ fidelis, patre gentili. And, behold, there was a certain disciple there named Timothy, the son of a faithful Jewish woman, whose father was a Gentile. 2 Huic testimonium bonum reddebant qui in Lystris erant et Iconio fratres. 2 The brothers who were in Lystra and Iconium gave good testimony to this. 3 Hunc voluit Paulus secum proficisci : et assumens circumcidit eum propter Judæos qui erant in illis locis. 3 Paul wanted him to go with him, and having assumed this, he circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places. For they all knew that his father was a Gentile. 4 And when they had passed through the cities, they delivered to them to be kept the dogmas which had been decreed by the apostles and the elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 Et ecclesiæ quidem confirmabantur fide, et abundabunt numero quotidie. 5 And the churches were indeed strengthened by faith, and will increase in number every day. 6 But passing through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word of God in Asia. 7 But when they had come to Mysia, they tried to go to Bithynia: and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them. 8 And when they had passed through Mysia, they came down to Troas: 9 and a vision was shown to Paul during the night: a certain Macedonian man was standing and imploring him, and saying: Passing into Macedonia, help us.

10 But as he saw the vision, we immediately sought to set out for Macedonia, certain of the fact that God had called us to evangelize them. 11 And sailing from Troas, we came to Samothrace in a straight course, and the next day to Naples: 12 and thence to Philippi, which is a city of the first part of Macedonia, a colony. 13 On the sabbath day we went outside the gate near the river, where it seemed that there was a prayer, and we sat down and talked with the women who had come together. 14 Et quædam mulier nomine Lydia, purpuraria civitatis Thyatirenorum, colens Deum, audivit : cujus Dominus aperuit cor intendere his quæ dicebantur a Paulo. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a purple woman of the city of Thyatira, worshiping God, heard it: whose heart the Lord opened to listen to what was said by Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, and her house, she pleaded, saying: If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, enter into my house and remain. Et coëgit nos. And he forced us. 16 Factum est autem euntibus nobis ad orationem, puellam quamdam habentem spiritum pythonem obviare nobis, quæ quæstum magnum præstabat dominis suis divinando. 16 And it happened that as we were going to prayer, we met a certain girl who had the spirit of a python, who was doing a great job for her masters by divination. 17 This followed Paul and us, crying out, saying: These men are servants of the exalted God, who announce to you the way of salvation. 18 Hoc autem faciebat multis diebus. 18 And this he did for many days. But Paul, being grieved, and turning, said to the spirit: I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. Et exiit eadem hora. And he went out at the same hour. 19 And when his lords saw that the hope of their gain was lost, they seized Paul and Silas, and brought them into the forum to the rulers: 20 and presenting them to the magistrates, said: These men disturb our city, since they are Jews: 21 and they announce a custom which it is not lawful for us to accept to do when we are Romans.

22 Et cucurrit plebs adversus eos : et magistratus, scissis tunicis eorum, jusserunt eos virgis cædi. 22 And the people ran against them: and the magistrates, tearing their coats, ordered them to be cut down with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows on them, they sent them into prison, commanding the guard to guard them carefully. 24 When he had received such an order, he sent them into the inner prison, and bound their feet with a tree. 25 At midnight Paul and Silas were praying, praising God, and listening to those who were in custody. 26 But suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were moved. 27 But the keeper of the prison awoke, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drew out his sword and wanted to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had fled. 28 Clamavit autem Paulus voce magna, dicens : Nihil tibi mali feceris : universi enim hic sumus. 28 And Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying: You have done yourself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Petitoque lumine, introgressus est : et tremefactus procidit Paulo et Silæ ad pedes : 30 et producens eos foras, ait : Domini, quid me oportet facere, ut salvus fiam ? 29 And asking for a light, he entered: and trembling fell at the feet of Paulus and Silesus: 30 and bringing them out, said: Lord, what must I do to be saved? 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him with all who were in his house. 33 And taking them away at that hour of the night, he washed their wounds: and he was baptized, and all his household immediately. 34 Cumque perduxisset eos in domum suam, apposuit eis mensam, et lætatus est cum omni domo sua credens Deo. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set a table for them, and rejoiced with all his household, believing in God.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the policemen, saying: Let those men go. 36 Nuntiavit autem custos carceris verba hæc Paulo : Quia miserunt magistratus ut dimittamini : nunc igitur exeuntes, ite in pace. 36 And the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul: Because they have sent the magistrates to let you go: now, therefore, going out, go in peace. 37 Paulus autem dixit eis : Cæsos nos publice, indemnatos homines Romanos, miserunt in carcerem : et nunc occulte nos ejiciunt ? 37 But Paul said to them: They publicly arrested us, Roman men without compensation, and sent us into prison: and now they expel us secretly? Not so: but let them come, 38 and themselves cast us out. And when they heard that they were Romans, they were afraid: 39 and when they came, they begged them, and when they brought them out, they begged them to leave the city. 40 And when they came out of the prison, they entered into Lydia: and when they saw their brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
