Sono convinto che avrei persistito in questa saggia e beata disposizione, se non fosse stato per le osservazioni gratuite e impietose lanciatemi dai colleghi che venivano nel mio studio. Prima di elaborare un piano complicato adatto allo scopo, mi limitai a suggerire a Bartleby l'opportunità di una sua partenza definitiva. In tono calmo e grave gli sottoposi l'idea, invitandolo a valutarla con matura ponderazione. Ma, dopo essere stato tre giorni a meditarvi, mi comunicò che rimaneva invariata la sua originaria decisione; in breve, preferiva ancora alloggiare da me.

Salendo le scale verso la mia vecchia tana, ecco Bartleby che in silenzio se ne stava seduto sulla ringhiera del pianerottolo.
