Per mia fortuna, visto che la causa specifica ne era la cattiva digestione, l'irritabilità e il conseguente nervosismo di Pince-Nez si manifestavano soprattutto al mattino, mentre nel pomeriggio era relativamente tranquillo. Quindi, poiché gli attacchi parossistici di Tacchino maturavano soltanto intorno al mezzogiorno, non dovevo mai vedermela con le loro eccentricità contemporaneamente. Zenzero, il terzo della lista, era un ragazzotto di circa dodici anni. Ma mi intenerì con un inchino di orientale cerimoniosità e con queste parole:

"Con rispetto, signore, è stato un gesto generoso rifornirla, a mie spese, di cancelleria".

Ora la mia attività originaria - quella di redigere atti notarili, di spulciare sulla regolarità dei titoli, di stendere oscuri documenti di varia natura - ebbe un considerevole incremento dopo che fui nominato all'Alta Corte di Equità. C'era quindi molto lavoro per i copisti. Non soltanto dovevo mettere sotto il torchio gli impiegati già con me, ma dovevo procurarmi altro aiuto.

In risposta a un annuncio, una bella mattina, si parò immobile sulla soglia del mio ufficio un giovane - la porta infatti era aperta, perché era estate. Rivedo ancora quella figura: pallidamente linda, penosamente decorosa, irrimediabilmente squallida! Era Bartleby.

Avrei dovuto già accennare alle porte pieghevoli di vetro smerigliato che dividevano in due il mio ufficio: da una parte c'erano i miei scrivani, dall'altra c'ero io. A seconda dell'umore aprivo le porte oppure le chiudevo. Decisi di assegnare a Bartleby un angolo accanto alle porte pieghevoli, ma dalla mia parte, in modo da avere a portata di voce quell'uomo tranquillo, se, per caso; si fosse dovuto sbrigare qualche lavoretto. Sistemai dunque la sua scrivania in quella parte della stanza, accanto a una finestrina laterale che in origine offriva uno scorcio sul retro, affacciandosi su certi cortili sporchi e muri di mattoni, ma che allora, a seguito di successive costruzioni, non si affacciava più su nulla, sebbene lasciasse entrare un po' di luce. A meno di tre piedi dai vetri della finestra c'era un muro, e la luce veniva da molto in alto, filtrando tra due alti edifici, quasi piovesse dal pertugio di una cupola. Per rendere ancora più soddisfacente la sistemazione, mi procurai un alto paravento verde pieghevole che poteva escludere completamente Bartleby dalla mia vista, pur lasciandolo a portata di voce. Così, in certo modo, convivevano solitudine e compagnia.

In un primo tempo Bartleby eseguì una straordinaria mole di lavoro. Quasi fosse ingordo di avere qualcosa da copiare, pareva volesse rimpinzarsi di documenti. Non c'era pausa per digerirli. Scriveva giorno e notte, copiando alla luce del sole e al lume della candela. Mi avrebbe entusiasmato quella sua dedizione, se fosse stato allegramente operoso. Continuava invece a macinare lavoro in silenzio, esangue, con moto meccanico.

È, naturalmente, parte essenziale del lavoro dello scrivano accertarsi che la copia sia esatta, parola per parola. Se in un ufficio vi sono due o più scrivani, si assistono a vicenda in questo controllo, uno leggendo la copia, l'altro tenendo l'originale. è una faccenda noiosa, spossante, soporifera. Non faccio fatica a pensare che sarebbe intollerabile per un temperamento sanguigno. Non riesco a immaginare, ad esempio, il focoso poeta Byron lietamente seduto insieme a Bartleby a controllare un atto legale di, diciamo, cinquecento pagine, scritte con grafia fitta e raggrinzita.

Di tanto in tanto, se c'era fretta, avevo l'abitudine di aiutare a confrontare qualche breve documento, chiamando allo scopo Tacchino o Pince-Nez. Uno dei motivi per mettere Bartleby così a portata di mano dietro il paravento era stato quello di disporre dei suoi servigi in lavoretti del genere. Era con me, credo, da tre giorni - non c'era stata ancora la necessità di esaminare le sue copie - quando, dovendo completare in gran premura una faccenduola, di punto in bianco chiamai Bartleby. In questo atteggiamento sedevo dunque quando lo chiamai, spiegando rapidamente quello che volevo da lui, cioè esaminare insieme a me un breve documento. Figuratevi la mia sorpresa, anzi la mia costernazione, quando, senza muoversi dal suo angolino, con voce singolarmente soave, ma ferma, Bartleby rispose: "Preferirei di no".

Rimasi per qualche tempo seduto, trasecolato, in assoluto silenzio, chiamando a raccolta le mie facoltà attonite. Subito mi venne da pensare che gli orecchi mi avessero ingannato, oppure che Bartleby avesse completamente frainteso quello che volevo. Ripetei la richiesta con quanta chiarezza mi era possibile, ma con altrettanta chiarezza giunse la risposta di prima: "Preferirei di no".

"Preferirei di no! ", ripetei in un'eco, alzandomi di furia e attraversando la stanza d'un balzo. "Come sarebbe a dire? Le ha dato di volta il cervello? Su, mi aiuti a controllare questo foglio con l'originale - prenda", e glielo buttai.

"Preferirei di no", disse.

Lo fissai con aria risoluta. Il volto era smunto nella sua compostezza; gli occhi grigi, fiochi e tranquilli. Non una grinza gli increspava il viso. Si trattava di una causa importante che imponeva la massima accuratezza. Sistemato tutto, chiamai Tacchino, Pince-Nez, Zenzero, che erano nella stanza attigua, con l'intenzione di dare a ciascuno dei miei quattro impiegati una copia del documento, mentre io avrei letto l'originale.

"Bartleby! Si sbrighi, aspetto".

Percepii il lento stridio delle gambe della sedia contro il pavimento nudo, e subito dopo apparve in piedi all'imbocco del suo eremo.
