Here are curious How is the order of Hebrew letters determined on the keyboard?
Why are the letters on a keyboard arranged like this?
They are not displayed alphabetically and there's no logic to the way they're organized.
Like convenience or typing speed,
This is not coincidental. This arrangement was originally created
for Yiddish typewriters over 100 years ago.
So how did it become like this?
This first typewriter was made by the Remington Typewriter company is 1873.
The English letters were arranged in a new manner that was called "Qwerty"
created by Christopher Scholes, an arrangement that remains with us to this day.
30 years later in 1930,
that wrote from right to left.
The arrangement of the Hebrew letters were determined based their use in the language.
This was done so that letters frequently used in Yiddish, such as "ע", "י", "א" and "ט" would be in the center
and letters that were less frequently used were pushed to the sides.
And some of the movements appear as dotted letters in their own right,
They also added special keys to the keyboard.
To "Aleph" they added a Kamatz,, an emphasized "Peh" and an emphasized "Bet"
Special keys were added for the double "yud" and for the double "vuv".
These combinations were very common in Yiddish.
with the Jews of the United States and Europe.
Writers such as I. L. Peretz and others
started to use Remingtons typewriters.
The competitor, Underwood Typewriter Company, took the opportunity
and copied the letter arrangement.
A patent was presented in 1916 for a typewriter that could type
from right to left, Hebrew letters appeared in this arrangement.
Both of the companies continued to sell more advanced versions
of Yiddish typewriters until the 1940's.
Then, their popularity started declining.
Even so, many writers continued to use these typewriters for writing in Yiddish
as well as writing in Hebrew and they were already used to the arrangement.
Therefore when they came out with the first typewriter in Hebrew,
They appeared without the special keys the Yiddish typewriter had
bu the arrangement stayed the same.
When personal computers appeared in the early 80's,
IBM and other companies copied this arrangement
for the modern keyboard and that's how it stayed to this very day.
This illogical arrangement causes slower
and less effective typing in Hebrew. And also mistakes.
But old habits die hard.
In order to solve a small part of the problem, this year the Standards Institute of Israel came out with
a new standard for Hebrew keyboard layout.
The new standard puts distance between the letter "vuv" and "nun sofit"
to prevent confusion between the two
and matches the location of the Hebrew punctuation marks to their English counterparts
so that we'll stop suffering from typing "tzadik sofit" instead of a period for example.
But it's doubtful whether the Standards Institute will even be able to integrate this.
And even if they do, our normal typing will continue to be much slower
than what it could be.
All of this, because of Yiddish.
