Where Questions

Where questions in Khmer usually tag ai naa ឯណា on to the end of the question. Again this is in contrast to English, in which the ‘where’ tends to appear at the start of the sentence. Asking ‘where do you come from?’ is an exception to this rule, in which naa ណា is used in isolation:
Where do you come from? – neak mok bee naa? អ្នក មក ពី ណា?
Where does he work? – go-ad twer gaa nau ai naa? គាត់ ធ្វើការ នៅ ឯ ណា?
Where is she? – go-ad nau ai naa? គាត់ នៅ ឯ ណា?

Notice also the addition of the word nau នៅ in the second and third examples here. This word is a preposition which means at/in.
