Yes/No Questions

There are two ways to form yes/no questions in Mandarin, and both of them are pretty different from how things work in English.

The first way is to add the question particle 吗. This effectively turns a sentence into a question as follows:

我喜欢那家餐厅. 他们喜欢那家餐厅吗?

I like that restaurant. Do they like that restaurant?

The second way is to essentially ask verb-not-verb

这是不是一家餐厅?

Is this a restaurant?

Remember, we negate 有 with 没 like so:

你有没有我的书?

Do you have my book?
