Snakes follow divers – level 2

Australian researchers found that the large olive snakes followed divers at the Great Barrier Reef. The snakes probably thought that the divers were other snakes.

It was the snakes´ breeding season, and they became very active. They came close to the divers, curled around their fins, attacked their cameras, and made funny movements. The snakes could attack the divers at any time, which was very dangerous because the large olive snakes were venomous.

The olive sea snake is the most common snake in the sea north of Australia, and it can be more than two meters long. Like other snakes, it breathes air, but it lives only in the sea.

Difficult words: breeding season (the time of year during when animals are sexually active), fin (one of two thin objects which a diver puts on his feet, and it helps him swim in water), venomous (an animal or insect which bites someone, and the person or animal can die from the bite).
