All Ears English, 43- Learn 3 Phrasal Verbs in English Using “Go”

43- Learn 3 Phrasal Verbs in English Using “Go”

Lindsay: This is an All Ears English Podcast, Episode 43: Teaching Tuesday, “Learn 3 Phrasal Verbs Using ‘Go'” and find out about a way to master phrasal verbs in a fun game.

[Instrumental]

Gabby: Welcome to the All Ears English Podcast, where you'll finally get real, native English conversation. Now here are your hosts, Lindsay McMahon, the ‘English Adventurer' and Gabby Wallace, the ‘Language Angel,' coming to you from Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Lindsay: Go, go, go! Learn three phrasal verbs using the verb “go” plus one more.

[Instrumental]

Gabby:

Hey Lindsay. How's it going?

Lindsay:

Hey Gabby. I'm doing all right and you?

Gabby:

Super.

Lindsay:

Excellent. So today we want to share with you guys three phrasal verbs that start with “go,” that use the verb “go” and one additional phrasal verb that we used in our Monday conversation.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

So let's start out with this one. “Go over.” Gabby:

Yeah.

We (um), we said we're gonna (going to) “go over” some different endings for emails. So what would you say “to go over some information” means?

Lindsay:

Yeah, I would say – another way to say that would be we're gonna (going to) cover some kind of information.

Gabby:

Talk about.

Lindsay:

Talk about.

Discuss. “Go through” even.

Gabby:

Yeah, yeah. So it's a little bit more serious than just chat. It's (like) you're really going to (um) explain.

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's like you have an agenda.

Gabby:

Okay.

Cool. And another phrasal verb is “go through.” So same context. We're going to “go through” some different email endings. So similar, right?

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's really similar and I get the sense “go through” being a little bit more about explaining something, (like), a little bit with a bit more detail kind of.

Gabby:

Yeah.

Yeah.

(Um) they're pretty similar, but “go through,”… it might be practicing (um) and of course there's (there are) other uses too, but the way we we're, we were talking about (um) “go through” and “go over” were just to discuss.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

And today we're “going through” three or four phrasal verbs, right?

Gabby:

Yeah.

That's what we're doing.

Lindsay:

Okay.

Gabby:

Cool. (Um) one other phrasal verb with “go” is (uh) “go for.” Lindsay:

Yeah, “go for” it.

Gabby:

Yeah.

(Um), I think we said “‘Go for' the more formal ending when you're not sure what to do, when in doubt.” So what would you say Lindsay?

What is “go for”? How could we describe the meaning?

Lindsay:

Yeah in this case, in this sentence that Gabby just read, it means more to choose something, to select.

Gabby:

Take action.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

But it could also mean, we also use the term “go for” like you can do it. Do it! Go for it! Get it! Come on!

Gabby:

Yes. I think we had one other phrasal verb, what was that?

Lindsay:

(Uh), I'm not sure. What was that? Oh yeah. Okay “start off.” So how would we use that?

Gabby:

(Um) just to begin (like)…

Lindsay:

Yeah.

Gabby:

Oh, sorry, yes. How would we use it? So “start off” like “Let's ‘start off' with a quote.” Lindsay:

Yeah.

Exactly.

Gabby:

Or “Let's ‘start off' with an appetizer.” Lindsay:

Perfect.

Gabby:

I'm getting hungry.

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's kind of – in this case, the “off” doesn't add much additional meaning does it?

Gabby:

No, it doesn't add meaning, but just, its colloquial (like) that's how we speak. We say “start off.” Lindsay:

Definitely.

Instead of saying “start.” So these are – phrasal verbs are a fantastic way to really instantly sound more natural.

Gabby:

Way more natural, yeah. Definitely.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

Gabby:

Cool. So those are our four (uh) phrasal verbs. Let's just take a minute to repeat them, so you can practice saying them. (Um), I'll say the first two: “To go over.” “To go through.”

Lindsay:

“To go for.” “To start off.”

Gabby:

Awesome. So Lindsay, I know, (you know), a lot of students (um) have some challenges with phrasal verbs because there are so many and just remembering them and understanding what they mean, how to use them, and so on, (um) do you – I think you have something that can help them right?

Lindsay:

Yeah, (you know), I've been getting, (you know), complaints about phrasal verbs from students for a long time. Students wondering how they can finally master them, because they're so natural and they're so tough to memorize and what I found was on the market, all you can really find out there is just dictionaries. And I was (like) “what are we gonna (going to) do here?” So I decided to create an iPhone application; if you have an iPhone or an iPad, this app will actually work on your device. It's called “Verb Dive” and the idea is to save “Danny the Verb Diver” from the sharks by choosing the right phrasal verb. It's a lot of fun.

Gabby:

That's so cool.

Lindsay:

(Um) fun music and just a fun, fast-paced game.

Gabby:

I know that games really increase your motivation to learn and your memory, so I think this is going to be really helpful for those of you who want to improve your phrasal verb skills.

Lindsay:

Absolutely. So if you want to download that game and give it a try, go to www.verbdive.com. That's v-e-r-b-d-i-v-e.com and also if you could leave a rating and/or review on iTunes in the app store, I would really appreciate that. Thank you guys.

Gabby:

Very cool. Thank you so much Lindsay.

[Instrumental]

Lindsay:

Okay.

So we want to encourage you guys to sign up for our email list and if you do sign up for the email list, you'll have a chance to get our e-book, “Ten Ways to Use a Podcast to Learn English.”

Gabby:

You get that immediately, instantly, for free as soon as you sign up.

Lindsay:

Yep and also there's something really exciting coming up. People who are on the email list are gonna (going to) be able to get exclusive content. (Um), we're not gonna (going to) say anything about it right now because it's coming later, but get on that email list. You don't want to miss it.

Gabby:

Yeah, it's the only way that we'll be able to send you exclusive content coming out that's related to the podcast.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

So come on over to www.allearsenglish.com and we will see you there.

[Instrumental]

Gabby:

Hey Lindsay. How's it going?

Lindsay:

Hey Gabby. I'm doing all right and you? Ben iyiyim ya sen? 我一切都好,你呢?

Gabby:

Super.

Lindsay:

Excellent. So today we want to share with you guys three phrasal verbs that start with “go,” that use the verb “go” and one additional phrasal verb that we used in our Monday conversation. 因此,今天我們想與大家分享三個以“go”開頭的片語動詞,它們使用動詞“go”,以及我們在星期一的對話中使用的另一個片語動詞。

Lindsay:

Yeah.

So let's start out with this one. 那麼就讓我們從這個開始吧。 “Go over.” Gabby: “過去。”蓋比:

Yeah.

We (um), we said we're gonna (going to) “go over” some different endings for emails. 我們(嗯),我們說過我們要(要)「檢查」電子郵件的一些不同結尾。 So what would you say “to go over some information” means? 那麼你所說的「查看一些資訊」是什麼意思呢?

Lindsay:

Yeah, I would say – another way to say that would be we're gonna (going to) cover some kind of information. 是的,我會說 - 另一種說法是我們將(將)涵蓋某種資訊。

Gabby:

Talk about.

Lindsay:

Talk about.

Discuss. “Go through” even. 甚至「通過」。

Gabby:

Yeah, yeah. So it's a little bit more serious than just chat. 所以這比單純的聊天要嚴肅一點。 It's (like) you're really going to (um) explain. 這(就像)你真的要(嗯)解釋一下。

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's like you have an agenda. 是的,就像你有議程一樣。

Gabby:

Okay.

Cool. And another phrasal verb is “go through.” So same context. 另一個片語動詞是「go through」。所以同樣的背景。 We're going to “go through” some different email endings. سنقوم "بمراجعة" بعض نهايات البريد الإلكتروني المختلفة. 我們將「瀏覽」一些不同的電子郵件結尾。 So similar, right? 非常相似,對吧?

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's really similar and I get the sense “go through” being a little bit more about explaining something, (like), a little bit with a bit more detail kind of. Да, это действительно похоже, и я чувствую, что "пройти" - это немного большее объяснение чего-то, (например), немного более подробное, вроде как. 是的,它確實很相似,我覺得「經歷」是更多地解釋一些事情,(例如),更詳細一些。

Gabby:

Yeah.

Yeah.

(Um) they're pretty similar, but “go through,”… it might be practicing (um) and of course there's (there are) other uses too, but the way we we're, we were talking about (um) “go through” and “go over” were just to discuss. (嗯)它們非常相似,但「經驗」…它可能是練習(嗯),當然也有(有)其他用途,但是我們的方式,我們正在談論(嗯) “go through”和“go over”只是為了討論。

Lindsay:

Yeah.

And today we're “going through” three or four phrasal verbs, right? 今天我們要「學習」三四個片語動詞,對吧?

Gabby:

Yeah.

That's what we're doing. 這就是我們正在做的事情。

Lindsay:

Okay.

Gabby:

Cool. (Um) one other phrasal verb with “go” is (uh) “go for.” Lindsay: (嗯)另一個有「go」的片語動詞是(呃)「go for」。林賽:

Yeah, “go for” it. 是的,「去爭取」吧。

Gabby:

Yeah.

(Um), I think we said “‘Go for' the more formal ending when you're not sure what to do, when in doubt.” So what would you say Lindsay? (嗯),我想我們說過“當你不確定要做什麼、有疑問時,‘選擇’更正式的結局。”那麼林賽你會怎麼說?

What is “go for”? 什麼是「去追求」? How could we describe the meaning? 我們該如何描述其中的意義呢?

Lindsay:

Yeah in this case, in this sentence that Gabby just read, it means more to choose something, to select. 是的,在這種情況下,在Gabby剛剛讀到的這句話中,更多的是意味著選擇某事,選擇。

Gabby:

Take action. 採取行動。

Lindsay:

Yeah.

But it could also mean, we also use the term “go for” like you can do it. Mais cela pourrait aussi signifier que nous utilisons également le terme "go for" comme vous pouvez le faire. 但這也可能意味著,我們也使用「go for」這個詞,就像你能做到的那樣。 Do it! Go for it! Get it! 得到它! Come on!

Gabby:

Yes. I think we had one other phrasal verb, what was that? 我想我們還有另一個片語動詞,那是什麼?

Lindsay:

(Uh), I'm not sure. What was that? Oh yeah. Okay “start off.” So how would we use that? 好的,「開始」。那我們該如何使用它呢?

Gabby:

(Um) just to begin (like)… (嗯)剛開始(就像)…

Lindsay:

Yeah.

Gabby:

Oh, sorry, yes. How would we use it? 我們將如何使用它? So “start off” like “Let's ‘start off' with a quote.” Lindsay: 所以「開始」就像「讓我們從引用開始」。林賽:

Yeah.

Exactly.

Gabby:

Or “Let's ‘start off' with an appetizer.” Lindsay: 或“讓我們從開胃菜‘開始’。”林賽:

Perfect.

Gabby:

I'm getting hungry.

Lindsay:

Yeah, it's kind of – in this case, the “off” doesn't add much additional meaning does it? 是的,有點像是——在這種情況下,「關閉」並沒有增加太多額外的含義,不是嗎?

Gabby:

No, it doesn't add meaning, but just, its colloquial (like) that's how we speak. 不,它不會增加意義,只是,它是口語化的(就像我們說話的方式一樣)。 We say “start off.” Lindsay: 我們說「開始」。林賽:

Definitely.

Instead of saying “start.” So these are – phrasal verbs are a fantastic way to really instantly sound more natural. 而不是說「開始」。所以這些是——片語動詞是一種非常好的方式,可以立即聽起來更自然。

Gabby:

Way more natural, yeah. 更自然了,是的。 Definitely.

Lindsay:

Yeah.

Gabby:

Cool. So those are our four (uh) phrasal verbs. 這些就是我們的四個(呃)片語動詞。 Let's just take a minute to repeat them, so you can practice saying them. 讓我們花一點時間重複它們,以便您可以練習說它們。 (Um), I'll say the first two: “To go over.” “To go through.” (嗯),我會說前兩個:“過去。” “要經過。”

所以林賽,我知道,(你知道),很多學生(嗯)在短語動詞方面遇到一些挑戰,因為有太多動詞,只需記住它們並理解它們的含義,如何使用它們等等,(嗯)你-我認為你有一些可以幫助他們的東西嗎?

Lindsay:

Yeah, (you know), I've been getting, (you know), complaints about phrasal verbs from students for a long time. 是的,(你知道),很長一段時間以來,我一直收到(你知道)學生對片語動詞的抱怨。 Students wondering how they can finally master them, because they're so natural and they're so tough to memorize and what I found was on the market, all you can really find out there is just dictionaries. 學生們想知道他們如何最終掌握它們,因為它們是如此自然,很難記住,而我發現的是市場上的東西,你真正能找到的只有字典。 And I was (like) “what are we gonna (going to) do here?” So I decided to create an iPhone application; if you have an iPhone or an iPad, this app will actually work on your device. 我當時想:“我們要在這裡做什麼?”所以我決定創建一個 iPhone 應用程式;如果您有 iPhone 或 iPad,則此應用程式實際上可以在您的裝置上運行。 It's called “Verb Dive” and the idea is to save “Danny the Verb Diver” from the sharks by choosing the right phrasal verb. 它被稱為“動詞潛水”,其想法是通過選擇正確的動詞短語來從鯊魚手中拯救“動詞潛水員丹尼”。 It's a lot of fun. 其樂無窮。

Gabby:

That's so cool.

Lindsay:

(Um) fun music and just a fun, fast-paced game. (嗯)有趣的音樂和有趣的快節奏遊戲。

Gabby:

I know that games really increase your motivation to learn and your memory, so I think this is going to be really helpful for those of you who want to improve your phrasal verb skills. 我知道遊戲確實可以提高你的學習動力和記憶力,所以我認為這對於想要提高短語動詞技能的人來說非常有幫助。
