狂人日记 (三) Diary of a Madman (III)

晚上 总是 睡不着 。 凡事 须 得 研究 ， 才 会 明白 。 Everything must be studied before it can be understood.

他们 —— 也 有 给 知县 打 枷 过 的 ， 也 有 给 绅士 掌过 嘴 的 ， 也 有 衙役 占 了 他 妻子 的 ， 也 有 老子 娘 被 债主 逼死 的 ； 他们 那 时候 的 脸色 ， 全 没有 昨天 这么 怕 ， 也 没有 这么 凶 。 There were some who had been beaten with yokes by the magistrate, some who had been slapped by a gentleman, some who had had their wives taken by the magistrates, and some who had had their mothers and fathers driven to death by their debtors; and they did not look so fearful or so fierce as they did yesterday.

最 奇怪的是 昨天 街上 的 那个 女人 ， 打 他 儿子 ， 嘴里 说道 ，“ 老子 呀 ！ The strangest thing is that the woman in the street yesterday beat her son and said, "Lao Tzu. 我要 咬 你 几口 才 出气 ！ I'm gonna have to bite you a couple of times to get out of this! ” 他 眼睛 却 看着 我 。 "And his eyes were on me. 我出 了 一惊 ， 遮掩 不住 ； 那 青面獠牙 的 一伙人 ， 便 都 哄笑 起来 。 I was so shocked that I could not conceal myself, and the gang of green-faced men laughed. 陈 老五 赶上 前 ， 硬 把 我 拖 回家 中 了 。 Chen Laowu caught up with me and dragged me home.

拖 我 回家 ， 家里 的 人 都 装作 不 认识 我 ； 他们 的 脸色 ， 也 全同 别人 一样 。 When I was dragged home, everyone in the family pretended not to know me, and they all looked at me the same way as everyone else. 进 了 书房 ， 便 反扣 上门 ， 宛然 是 关 了 一只 鸡鸭 。 When he enters the study, he closes the door behind him, as if he were a chicken or a duck. 这 一件 事 ， 越教 我 猜 不出 底细 。 This incident has made it more and more difficult for me to guess the details.

前 几天 ， 狼子 村 的 佃户 来 告荒 ， 对 我 大哥 说 ， 他们 村里 的 一个 大 恶人 ， 给 大家 打死 了 ； 几个 人 便 挖出 他 的 心肝 来 ， 用油 煎炒 了 吃 ， 可以 壮 壮胆 子 。 A few days ago, the tenants of Wolf Village came to tell my elder brother that a big villain in their village had been beaten to death, and a few of them dug out his heart and liver and fried it in oil to eat it, so as to strengthen their courage. 我 插 了 一句 嘴 ， 佃户 和 大哥 便 都 看 我 几眼 。 When I interjected, the tenants and the big brother looked at me. 今天 才 晓得 他们 的 眼光 ， 全同 外面 的 那伙 人 一模一样 。 Today, I realize that they are looking at the same things as the people outside.

想 起来 ， 我 从 顶上 直冷到 脚跟 。

他们 会 吃 人 ， 就 未必 不会 吃 我 。 If they can eat people, they may not eat me.

你 看 那 女人 “ 咬 你 几口 ” 的话 ， 和 一伙 青面獠牙 人 的 笑 ， 和 前天 佃户 的话 ， 明明 是 暗号 。 You see, the woman's words, "Bite you a few times," the smiles of the green-faced men, and the words of the tenants of the day before yesterday, are clearly code words. 我 看出 他话 中全 是 毒 ， 笑 中 全是 刀 。 I can see that his words are full of poison and his smile is full of knives. 他们 的 牙齿 ， 全是 白厉厉 的 排着 ， 这 就是 吃 人 的 家伙 。 And their teeth, which are all in white rows, these are the devourers of men.

照 我 自己 想 ， 虽然 不是 恶人 ， 自从 踹 了 古家 的 簿子 ， 可 就 难说 了 。 In my opinion, though I am not a wicked man, I cannot say so since I have kicked the books of the Koo family. 他们 似乎 别有 心思 ， 我全 猜 不出 。 They seemed to have something else in mind, and I couldn't guess what it was. 况且 他们 一 翻脸 ， 便 说 人 是 恶人 。 Moreover, when they turn their faces against them, they call them evildoers. 我 还 记得 大哥 教 我 做论 ， 无论怎样 好人 ， 翻 他 几句 ， 他 便 打 上 几个 圈 ； 原谅 坏人 几句 ， 他 便 说 “ 翻天 妙手 ， 与众不同 ”。 I can still remember that my elder brother taught me to do theories, and no matter how good a person was, he would give him a couple of rounds when he criticized him; and when he forgave a bad person, he would say that he was "a good man who is different from others". 我 那里 猜得到 他们 的 心思 ， 究竟 怎样 ； 况且 是 要 吃 的 时候 。 I can not guess what is in their minds; besides, it is time to eat.

凡事 总须 研究 ， 才 会 明白 。 古来 时常 吃 人 ， 我 也 还 记得 ， 可是 不 甚 清楚 。 我 翻开 历史 一查 ， 这 历史 没有 年代 ， 歪歪斜斜 的 每叶 〔 页 〕 上 都 写 着 “ 仁义道德 ” 几个 字 。 我 横竖 睡不着 ， 仔细 看 了 半夜 ， 才 从 字 缝里 看出 字来 ， 满本 都 写 着 两个 字 是 “ 吃 人 ”！

书上 写 着 这 许多 字 ， 佃户 说 了 这 许多 话 ， 却 都 笑吟吟 的 睁 着 怪 眼看 我 。

我 也 是 人 ， 他们 想要 吃 我 了 ！
