在 我 开始 成为 外交人员 的 时候 ， 并不知道 自己 会 因此 陷到 中国 和 日本 的 文化 里 。
When I began my career as a diplomat, I didn't realize that I would be caught up in Chinese and Japanese culture.
我 的 语言 探险 很快 就要 让 我 面对 学习 语言 的 真正 挑战 。
My language adventure will soon bring me face to face with the real challenge of learning a language.
这 两种 语言 对 我 来说 ， 曾经 是 那么 陌生 与 遥远 。
These two languages were once so strange and distant to me.
想 把 这 两种 语言学 好 ， 必须 要 下决心 、 下工夫 、 并且 要 有 极好 的 学习 技巧 。
To learn these two languages well, one must be determined, hardworking and have excellent learning skills.
但是 ， 若 不是 对 这些 人 、 对 这些 文化 有 强烈 的 兴趣 ， 也 还是 很难 把 语言学 得 通顺 。
However, it is still difficult to learn the language fluently without a strong interest in the people and the culture.
在 一九六七年 的 加拿大 首都 渥太华 ， 我 开始 了 有生以来 的 第一份 全职 工作 ， 职位 是 「 商务 专员 」。
In 1967 in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, I started my first full-time job as a Commercial Specialist.
大部分 正在 受训 的 年轻 专员 ， 都 希望 能 被 派 到 自己 感兴趣 的 国家 去 服务 。
Most of the young commissioners in training would like to be sent to serve in a country of their interest.
但是 ， 有 三分之一 的 相关 职位 是 在 美国 。
However, one third of the relevant positions are in the United States.
每个 人 都 尽量避免 被 分派 到 克里夫兰 或 布法罗 去 。
Everyone tries to avoid being assigned to Cleveland or Buffalo.
当 外贸局 宣布 要 指派 一人 前往 香港 学习 中文 ， 以 预备 日后 与 中华人民共和国 建交 ， 我 心想 ， 这是 避免 到 布法罗 的 最好 机会 了 。
When the Bureau of Foreign Trade announced that it was sending someone to Hong Kong to study Chinese in preparation for establishing diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, I figured that was the best chance to avoid Buffalo.
于是 ， 我 开始 向 渥太华 的 一名 中国 老先生 学习 中文 。
So I began to learn Chinese from an old Chinese gentleman in Ottawa.
由于 一 星期 只上 一课 ， 所以 学到 的 并不多 。
Since there is only one lesson a week, not much can be learned.
我 只是 让 人事 主任 和 其它 资深 人士 知道 我 正在 做些 什么 ， 因为 就 机会 来说 ， 为什么 他们 不 挑选 一名 已经 致力 学习 中文 的 学生 去 呢 ? 香港 并 不是 我 就职 的 第一个 选择 ， 我 其实 更想 去 的 是 里约热内卢 、 罗马 或 马德里 。
I'm just letting the personnel officer and other senior people know what I'm doing because, in terms of opportunity, why wouldn't they pick a student who's already committed to learning Chinese? Hong Kong was not my first choice for a job; I would have preferred Rio de Janeiro, Rome or Madrid.
不过 ， 香港 听 起来 也 颇具 异国情调 。
However, Hong Kong also sounds quite exotic.
我 很 高兴 自己 终于 被 指派 到 香港 去 。
I am glad that I have finally been assigned to Hong Kong.
这么 容易 地被 选 上 ， 是因为 我 已 下决心 去 学习 这个 语言 的 缘故 。
I was chosen so easily because I was determined to learn the language.
决心 常常 以 不同 的 方式 付 红利 给 你 。
Determination often pays you dividends in different ways.
至于 为什么 要 选择 香港 ， 那 是因为 中国 当时 正 处于 文化大革命 的 动荡 时刻 ， 而 台湾 又 因为 政治 因素 的 考虑 ， 对 一名 日后 即将 前往 中国 就任 的 加拿大 外交代表 ， 显然 并 不 适宜 。
As to why Hong Kong was chosen, it was because China was at that time in the turbulent times of the Cultural Revolution, and Taiwan, for political reasons, was obviously not suitable for a Canadian diplomatic representative who was going to take up a post in China in the future.
由于 香港 有 一些 讲 普通话 的 北方 移民 ， 这时 便成 了 学习 中文 最 适宜 的 地方 了 。
Since there are some Mandarin-speaking immigrants from the north in Hong Kong, this is the most suitable place to learn Chinese.
记得 那时 有位 好 朋友 问 我 是否 应该 接受 那个 职务 。
I remember a good friend of mine asked me if I should accept the position.
「 要是 你学 不会 中文 怎么办 ?」 他 问 。
由于 我 已经 有 学会 法语 的 经验 ， 想当然 中文 也 应该 学得会 才 是 。
Since I already had experience in learning French, I thought I should be able to learn Chinese as well.
语言 家 能够 精通 数种 语言 ， 大多 是因为 与日俱增 的 信心 。
Linguists become fluent in several languages, mostly because of growing confidence.
语言 学习 已 不是 什么 神奇 的 事 。
Language learning is no longer a miracle.
而且 ， 你 学习 的 语言 愈 多 ， 就 愈 能够 培养 出用 新 方式 去 表达 的 能力 。
And the more languages you learn, the more you develop the ability to express yourself in new ways.
这 有点像 运动 一样 ， 一旦 学会 了 一种 ， 就 很 容易 再 学习 另 一种 。

As it turned out, I did meet my later wife, Carmen, in Hong Kong.

We have been happily married for over thirty years and have two sons and five grandchildren.

Finally, I arrived in Hong Kong and boarded the official bus of the Canadian Embassy which came to greet me.
当 我们 驶过 拥挤 的 九龙 ， 见到 许多 单调 、 灰色 的 公寓 大厦 ， 我 这 才 突然 回到 了 现实 。
When we drove through the crowded Kowloon and saw many monotonous, gray apartment buildings, I suddenly came back to reality.
香港 并 不是 什么 世外桃源 啊 ! 总之 ， 我们 的 车子 上 了 一艘 渡轮 ， 要 从 九龙 到 香港岛 去 。
Hong Kong is not exactly a paradise! Anyway, our car boarded a ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island.
我 这时 突然 发现自己 正面 对 一个 水上 万花筒 : 货轮 、 驳船 、 军舰 、 还有 中式 舢板 和 许多 小 游艇 ， 远处 则 是 许多 现代化 的 摩天大楼 和 威严 壮观 的 旧 英国式 建筑 ， 这 一切 ， 都 以 高耸 的 香港岛 的 太平山 作为 背景 。
I then suddenly found myself facing a kaleidoscope of water: freighters, barges, warships, Chinese sampans and many small yachts, with many modern skyscrapers and magnificent old English buildings in the distance, all against the backdrop of the soaring Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island.
生活 在 「 皇家 香港 领地 」( 这是 当时 的 称呼 )， 我 总 觉得 有种 被 关闭 的 感觉 。
Living in the "Royal Hong Kong Territory" (as it was called at that time), I always had the feeling of being shut out.

With its beaches, lush subtropical vegetation and a sizeable European population, it looks like a vacation spot.
我 被 安排 住 在 那里 ， 然后 像 以往 一般 前来 学习 语言 的 外交人员 一样 ， 到 香港大学 去 上课 。
I was arranged to stay there and then go to the University of Hong Kong to attend classes, just like the usual diplomats who came to learn the language.
但是 ， 几个 月 之后 ， 我 选择 住 到 人口 比较 密集 的 九龙 地区 ， 然后 到 香港中文大学 去 学习 中文 。
However, a few months later, I chose to live in the more densely populated Kowloon area and then went to the Chinese University of Hong Kong to study Chinese.

I chose to learn Chinese in the same way that I had chosen to learn French by immersing myself in French culture.

As Cantonese is the major language in Hong Kong, it does not provide me with an environment in which I can really learn Putonghua.
但 广东话 也 是 一种 中国 语言 ， 而且 可以 让 我 充分 感受 到 中国 的 文化 。
But Cantonese is also a Chinese language, and it allows me to fully experience the culture of China.

I stepped out of my small Western environment, which had always been so relaxed and ornate, and threw myself completely into Chinese daily life: the sounds and smells from the bustling streets and markets; the stores selling Chinese medicinal herbs and all sorts of strange and unusual objects; the small workshops lining the streets, where people worked noisily and energetically; and the hawkers who carried their goods on poles along the streets with a great deal of vitality.

In the neighborhood of my school or in the crowded Tsim Sha Tsui of Kowloon, I could join my workers for a cheap lunch of noodle or curry, or I could go to a fancy restaurant for an expensive meal of good Chinese cooking.
林立 的 餐馆 呈现 不同 地区 的 中国 美味 : 北京 、 山东 、 四川 、 潮州 ， 各式各样 ， 都 挤 在 狭窄 、 熙攘 的 街道 里 。
The restaurants offer the tastes of different regions of China: Beijing, Shandong, Sichuan, Teochew, and many others, all crammed into the narrow, bustling streets.

In other words, I was indirectly and unknowingly forced to accept this language.

I don't remember much of the book, but I understand that textbooks such as this, which are not authentic, may still be necessary for beginners of the language.

It is entitled "Twenty Lectures on Chinese Culture", a primer compiled by Yale University in 1963, which covers the history and culture of China and is presented in an easy-to-understand language.
我 至今 仍 偶尔 拿 出来 阅读 ， 以 重新 唤起 我 对 中文 的 记忆 。
I still read it occasionally to refresh my memory of the Chinese language.
虽然 这 本书 使用 的 文字 非常 浅显 ， 谈到 的 主题 却 非常 真实 ， 都 是 有关 中国 的 历史 和 文化 。
Although the language used in this book is very simple, the subjects are very real and relate to the history and culture of China.
对 初学者 来说 ， 把 阅读 材料 分等级 是 不可避免 的 ， 因为 阅读 浅显 的 东西 能够 帮助 建立 信心 ， 然后 才 逐渐 加强 流利 的 程度 。
Grading reading materials is inevitable for beginning readers, as reading light material can help build confidence before gradually increasing fluency.

Nonetheless, these books should address topics of interest and not just imitate children's stories.
