由于 我 一向 对 历史 和 探险 故事 深感 兴趣 ， 我 发现 西班牙 就 如同 法国 一样 ， 其 人民 与 文化 融合 的 情形 十分 引人入胜 。 As I have always been deeply interested in history and adventure stories, I found Spain, like France, to be a fascinating blend of people and cultures. 巴斯克 人 、 赛 尔特 人 、 伊比利亚人 、 希腊人 、 罗马 人 、 西 哥德人 、 阿 拉伯 人 、 巴巴 里 人 、 犹太人 、 吉普赛人 ( 源自 印度 ) 等 民族 的 历史 演变 及 语言 文化 ， 都 对 西班牙 产生 影响 。

现在 我们 往往 忘记 了 中古 欧洲 的 伟大 导师 ， 即 是 西班牙 南部 安达 鲁斯 的 世界性 阿拉伯 文化 。 Nowadays we tend to forget the great mentor of medieval Europe, the cosmopolitan Arab culture of Andalus in southern Spain. 当 西班牙 北方 的 基督徒 再度 征服 南方 的 回教 地区 时 ， 从 欧洲各国 蜂涌 而来 的 学者 ， 就 在 托里 多 及其 它 城市 翻译 阿拉伯 的 科学 与 哲学 文献 。 When the Christians of northern Spain reconquered the Muslim regions of the south, scholars from all over Europe flocked to Torrido and other cities to translate Arab scientific and philosophical literature. 阿拉伯人 从 沙漠 中 崛起 ， 进而 征服 从 印度 到 西班牙 之间 的 土地 。 The Arabs rose from the desert and went on to conquer the land from India to Spain. 藉此 ， 他 们 接触 了 印度 、 波斯 、 巴比伦 、 埃及 与 希腊 ， 并 从中 学习 ， 然后 吸收 成为 他们 文化 的 一部 份 。 In doing so, they came into contact with India, Persia, Babylon, Egypt, and Greece, and learned from them, and then assimilated them as part of their culture. 他们 与 中国 的 唐朝 也 有 频繁 的 贸易 接触 ， 对 中国 的 科技 亦 相当 了解 。 They also had frequent trade contacts with the Tang Dynasty in China and had a good understanding of Chinese technology. 西方 的 科学 、 数学 、 医学 、 音乐 、 建筑 及其 它 研究 科目 ， 皆 因 接触 阿拉伯 的 高度文明 而 有 巨大 的 成长 与 进步 。 Western science, mathematics, medicine, music, architecture, and other subjects of study all grew and progressed tremendously as a result of exposure to the high civilization of Arabia. 当 我 参观 优雅 的 安 大路 西亚 花 园 和 建筑物 时 ， 都 会试 着 去 想象 在 最 光辉灿烂 时期 的 安达 鲁斯 。 When I visit the elegant Andalusian gardens and buildings, I try to imagine Andalus in its most glorious days.

西班牙 ， 尤其 是 在 南方 ， 是 个 能 让 人 产生 强烈 感觉 与 印象 的 国家 。 Spain, especially in the south, is a country that creates strong feelings and impressions. 极度 明亮 的 太阳 ， 使得 无 论 在 光与影 之间 、 在 花 与 树 的 阴暗 色调 之间 、 或 在 粉白色 的 石屋 与 橘红色 的 干旱 土地 之间 ， 都 造成 了 强烈 的 对比 效果 。 The extreme brightness of the sun creates a strong contrast between light and shadow, between the shadowy tones of flowers and trees, or between the pinkish-white stone house and the orange-red arid land. 记得 那时 有人 告诉 我 :「 就是 这 太阳 ， 使 我们 能够 忍受 佛朗哥 的 统治 。」 I remember being told at the time, "It is this sun that has enabled us to endure Franco's rule." 我 所到之处 ， 人人 都 显得 很 自豪 、 很 友善 。 Everywhere I went, everyone looked proud and friendly. 而 我 西班牙语 的 沟通 能力 ， 也 已 使 我 能 够 走进 任何 一家 小吃店 或 小 酒吧 ， 透过 语言 去 结交 朋友 和 探索 、 了解 当地 的 文化 。 My communication skills in Spanish have enabled me to go into any snack bar or restaurant and make friends and explore and learn about the local culture through the language.

虽然 我 喜欢 旅游 ， 但是 在 法国 的 主要 目的 还是 学习 。 Although I like traveling, my main purpose in France is to study. 一九六 ○ 年代 初期 的 巴黎 ， 是 个 十分 奇 妙 的 地方 。 Paris in the early 1960s was a wonderful place. 我 住 在 一个 没有 暖气 ， 又 极 不 舒适 的 小 公寓 里 。 I live in a small, uncomfortable apartment with no heating. 公寓 位于 Faubourg St. Honoré 街 上 一栋 建于 一 七八 九年 的 建筑物 里 ， 我 住 在 六楼 ， 盥洗室 则 在 三楼 。 The apartment was located in a building dating from 1789 on rue Faubourg St. Honoré. I lived on the sixth floor and the washroom was on the third floor. 我 总是 知道 五楼 的 邻居 是否 在家 ， 因为 每次 我 在 厨房 里 用 小 澡盆 洗 热水澡 ， 由于 不 可能 不 泼洒 些 水到 盆 外面 ， 当楼 下 的 邻居 发现 水滴 到 房内 的 时候 ， 就 会 拿 起 扫把 用力 敲打 天花板 。 I always knew whether my neighbors on the fifth floor were at home, for whenever I took a hot bath in the kitchen in a small tub, it was impossible for me not to throw some water outside the tub, and when the neighbors downstairs found the water dripping into the room, they took up a broom and banged hard on the ceiling.

像 这么 简陋 的 楼房 ， 居然 位于 巴黎 最 时尚 的 精华 区内 ， 实在 令人 惊讶 。 It is surprising that such a modest building is located in the most fashionable and elite district of Paris. 一些 有名 的 服装 与 香 水 公司 ， 总部 就 在 这条 街上 。 Some famous clothing and perfume companies have their headquarters on this street. 譬如 : 雅诗兰黛 就 在 我 住 的 那栋 楼 里 ; 法国 总统 的 官邸 爱丽舍 宫 ， 则 在 街 的 另一头 ; 再 隔 条街 ， 就是 「 协和 广场 」 了 。 For example, Estee Lauder is in the building where I live; the Palais de l'Elysée, the official residence of the President of France, is at the other end of the street; and the Concorde Square is just a block away. 至于 我 住 的 那个 没有 暖气 的 公寓 ， 自从 法国 大革命 之后 则 没什么 改变 ! As for my unheated apartment, nothing has changed since the French Revolution!

从 我 住处 步行 可及 的 范围 内 ， 是 有钱人 光临 的 商店 和 餐厅 。 Within walking distance of my place were stores and restaurants frequented by the rich. 如 : 位于 玛德莲 广场 的 富香 ， 是 家 有名 的 高级 食品 专卖店 ; 还有 格兰 大道 上 的 许多 商品 店 和 美心 餐厅 等 。 For example, Foo Heung in Madeleine Square is a famous fine food specialty store, and there are also many stores and Maxim's restaurants on Grand Avenue. 这是 「 美丽 纪元 ( 欧洲 于 第一次世界大战 前 的 安定 富裕 时光 ， 约 从 公元 1871 到 1914 年 。 This was the "Era of Beauty" (the period of stability and affluence in Europe before the First World War, which lasted from about 1871 to 1914). )」 的 世界 啊 ! 对 我 而言 ， 那 正是 廿 世纪 欧洲 悲剧 ( 指 第一次世界大战 ) 发生 之前 ， 法国 文化 达到 了 最高点 的 象征 。 What a world! For me, it symbolizes the culmination of French culture in the twentieth century, before the tragedy of Europe (the First World War).

我 的 自行车 带 着 我 四处 跑 : 上学 、 打工 、 或 到 市中心 的 拉丁区 去 玩 。 My bike takes me everywhere: to school, to work, or to play in the Latin Quarter in the city center. 骑 自行车 穿过 交通 繁忙 的 协和 广场 或 星形 广场 ， 是 我 每天 都 得 面对 的 挑战 。 Cycling through the heavily trafficked Concorde Square or Star Square is a daily challenge for me. 不过 ， 从 另一方面 来看 ， 也 没有 其它 更 好 的 方法 可以 让你能 真正 体验 到 巴黎 的 生活 了 。 But, on the other hand, there is no better way to really experience life in Paris. 此外 ， 这 也 是从 某处 去 到 某处 最 便捷 的 方 法 ， 而且 不用 担心 停车 问题 。 Besides, it is also the quickest way to get from one place to another, and there is no need to worry about parking.

在 法国 读书 的 时候 ， 我 有 好几个 兼差 。 When I was studying in France, I had several part-time jobs. 其中 之一 ， 是 到 一个 法国 家庭 去 与 他们 共进午餐 ， 以 英语 交谈 作为 回报 。 One of them was to go to a French family and have lunch with them in return for an English conversation. 身为 一个 穷学生 ， 我 通常 吃 的 是 学校 餐厅 里 的 简单 快餐 。 As a poor student, I usually ate simple fast food in the school cafeteria. 这个 兼差 倒 是 能 让 我 趁机 大快朵颐 ， 并且 喝些 葡萄酒 ， 最后 再 来 一杯 蒸汽 加压 煮出 的 浓咖啡 ， 好 让 我 保持 清醒 。 It's a part-time job that allows me to eat and drink some wine, and then finish with a steam-pressurized cup of espresso to keep me awake. 我 的 第二个 差事 ， 是 负责管理 一所 农学院 的 语言 实验室 。 My second job was to manage the language laboratory of an agricultural college. 每逢 星期四 ， 我 在 一个 「 中 产 阶级 家庭 」 饱食 一顿 丰盛 的 午餐 之后 ， 便 骑 着 自行车 ， 绕过 半个 巴黎 来到 这所 农学院 。 On Thursdays, after a hearty lunch in a "middle-class family," I rode my bicycle halfway around Paris to this agricultural college. 我 满头大汗 地 赶到 语言 实验室 ， 及时 开启 控制中心 的 设备 。 I arrived at the language lab in a sweaty mess and turned on the equipment in the control center just in time.

就是 在 这 所 农学院 里 ， 有个 学生 因为 不 满意 自己 的 英语 理解能力 ， 忿 而 离开 了 实验教室 。 It was in this agricultural college that a student left the laboratory classroom out of his English comprehension skills. 我 记得 那些 教材 都 是 一些 技术性 的 农业 专有名词 ， 对 年轻 的 学生 来说 ， 实在 是 枯燥无味 。 I remember that those textbooks were all about technical agricultural terms, which were really boring to young students. 如果 只是 期望 日后 可以 使用 而 没有 应有 的 兴趣 ， 你 是 无法 真正 学好 单词 的 。 You can't really learn words well if you just expect to use them later without due interest.

这些 来自 农场 的 学生 并 不会 讲 英语 ， 为什么 要 让 他们 学些 艰涩 难懂 的 、 以后 很 可能 根本 就 派 不上 用场 的 技术性 专门 用语 呢 ? 这 情形 在 一般 的 语言 教学 十分 普遍 ， 都 是 过于 强调 语法 和 词 汇 。 These students from the farms do not speak English, so why do they have to learn some difficult technical expressions which may not be useful at all in the future? This is very common in language teaching, where too much emphasis is placed on grammar and vocabulary. 对 学生 来说 ， 这 只是 用来 通过 考试 ， 不是 用来 沟通 。 For students, it's just for passing exams, not for communicating.

只有 那些 有趣 、 有 意义 的 东西 ， 才能 真正 让 我们 学 有所 得 。 Only those things that are interesting and meaningful can really teach us something. 我们 应该 允许 学生 选择 自己 熟 悉 、 感兴趣 的 题材 。 We should allow students to choose topics that they are familiar with and interested in. 有些 人 可能 选择 农场 经营 ， 但 也 有些 人 可能 宁愿 听些 实际 的 英语会话 录 音 ， 像是 年轻人 之间 讨论 音乐 或 参加 宴会 之类 的 话题 。 Some people may choose to farm, but others may prefer to listen to recordings of actual conversational English, such as young people discussing music or attending parties. 我们 的 目的 是 要 使 英语 具有 意义 。 Our aim is to make English meaningful. 一 旦 这些 学生 能够 用 英语 沟通 ， 农业 技术性 的 专门词汇 就 能 很快 地 学会 。 Once these students are able to communicate in English, the technical vocabulary of agriculture is quickly learned.

有天 凌晨 ， 我 在 巴黎 的 中央 市场 ( 就是 出现 在 电影 Irma La Douce 的 那个 市场 ) 喝 了 一碗 当 作 宵夜 的 洋葱 浓汤 之后 ， 骑着 自行车 回到 住所 。 One morning, I rode my bicycle back to my apartment after a late-night bowl of onion soup at the central market in Paris (the market that appeared in the movie Irma La Douce). 信箱 里 有 一封信 ， 告诉 我 已 被 加拿大 外贸部 录用 。 There was a letter in the mailbox telling me that I had been hired by the Canadian Department of Foreign Trade. 这是 好几个 月 前 ， 我 的 一个 朋友 说服 我 去 加拿大 大使馆 参加 外交 工作人员 录用 考试 。 It was several months ago that a friend of mine convinced me to take the diplomatic staff entrance exam at the Canadian Embassy. 现在 ， 我 真的 有 了 一份 工作 ! Now I really have a job!
