Θα σας δείξω συγκεκριμένα παραδείγματα απ' τη δουλειά που κάναμε I will show you specific examples of the work we did

στη Γενική Γραμματεία Πληροφοριακών Συστημάτων από τρεις τομείς. |||||||sectors at the General Secretariat of Information Systems from three fields.

Τους ανθρώπους, την πληροφορική και τη μέτρηση της απόδοσης. |||computer science|||measurement||performance People, information technology and performance measuring.

Ξεκινάω από το σημαντικότερο από αυτούς τους τρεις τομείς, τους ανθρώπους. |||most important||||||| I will start with the most important of the three, people.

Μέσα σε λίγες μέρες για τις 5 αυτές θέσεις συγκεντρώθηκαν σχεδόν 1.000 αιτήσεις. ||||||||were gathered||applications Within a few days we had almost 1,000 applications for those 5 positions.

Επειδή είχαν συγκεντρωθεί και είχαν υποβληθεί ηλεκτρονικά ||gathered|||submitted| Since they were gathered and submitted electronically

Έτσι φτιάξαμε ένα πρόγραμμα το οποίο κάνει αυτή τη δουλειά. So we created a software that does that.

Οι καλύτεροι έχουν δέκα φορές περισσότερες δυνατότητες απ' τους χειρότερους. ||||||possibilities||| The best ones have 10 times more abilites than the worst ones.

Τόσο απλό και φανταστείτε πόση διαφορά μπορεί να κάνει αυτό σ' έναν οργανισμό. ||||how much|||||||| So simple, imagine the difference this could do in an organization.

Χρησιμοποιώντας αυτόν τον τρόπο και παίρνοντας αυτούς τους ανθρώπους, |||||taking||| Using this method and taking those people,

φτιάξαμε αυτό που λέμε στην ιδιαίτερη μου πατρίδα, |||||special||homeland we created, what we call in my home land,

την Κεφαλλονιά, dream-team. |Kefalonia|| in Kefallonia, a dream-team.

Ένας από τους ανθρώπους αυτούς είχε διευθύνει ||||||directed One of these people had managed

όλα τα πληροφοριακά συστήματα για μια μεγάλη χρηματιστηριακή εταιρεία, ||informational|systems||||stock exchange|company all information technology systems for a big stock trading company,

για όλη την Ευρώπη, πριν επιστρέψει στην Ελλάδα, |||||return|| for whole Europe, before returning to Greece,

για να διευθύνει το τμήμα μηχανογράφησης μιας ασφαλιστικής. ||manage||department|data processing||insurance company to manage the IT department of an insurance company.

Η τύχη το έφερε να ψάχνει για δουλειά όταν δημοσιεύτηκε αυτή η πρόσκληση, |fate||brought||he was looking||||was published|||invitation To my luck, he happened to be looking for a job when this invitation was published,

διότι η Εταιρεία στην οποία δούλευε είχε χρεοκοπήσει. |||||||gone bankrupt because the company he worked for, went bankrupt.

Αυτό που κάναμε λοιπόν So what we did

είναι να φτιάχνουμε ομάδες εργασίας με τους πιο άξιους ανθρώπους. |||workgroups|working groups||||worthy| was to make working groups with the most capable people.

Θα μου πείτε γιατί κάποιος να δουλέψει σε αυτές τις ομάδες You might ask why someone would work in those groups

αυτούς τους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι δουλεύουν πολύ παραπάνω those people, who work much more

από εκατοντάδες συναδέλφους τους |hundreds of|colleagues of| than hundreds of their colleagues

και αμείβονται ακριβώς το ίδιο με αυτούς; |are compensated||||| and get exactly the same pay?

Πέρναγα λοιπόν από τα γραφεία τους να τους μιλήσω, I was passing|||||||| So I went by their offices to talk to them,

Ναι, υπάρχουν δημόσιοι υπάλληλοι οι οποίοι δουλεύουν μέχρι αργά το βράδυ. ||public|employees||||||| Yes, there are public servants that work till late at night.

Συνεχίζω με το δεύτερο αντάρτικο, την Πληροφορική. I continue||||rebel||Computer Science I continue with the second guerilla area, information technology.

Όπως σας είπα και στην αρχή, As I told you at the beginning,

το ελληνικό δημόσιο είναι αδύνατο να αγοράσει πράγματα, ||public sector||impossible||| the Greek public sector is not able to buy things,

από φάρμακα και προγράμματα για υπολογιστές |||||computers ranging from medicine to computer software,

μέχρι χαρτί τουαλέτας και χαρτί για τα σχολικά μας βιβλία. ||toilet paper|||||school|| to toilet paper and paper for our school books.

Είναι τόσο περίπλοκες οι διαδικασίες που αργούν, ||complex||procedures||take a long time The procedures are so complicated that they delay so much,

που είναι σχεδόν άχρηστες. |||useless and they are almost useless.

Επομένως θέλαμε να βρούμε έναν τρόπο να βρούμε προγράμματα άμεσα, Therefore||||||||| So we wanted to find a way to find software right away,

να μπορούμε να τα χρησιμοποιήσουμε, to be able to use them,

χωρίς αυτές τις βαριές, τις περίπλοκες διαδικασίες. |||heavy||complex|processes without these heavy complex procedures.

προγράμματα δηλαδή που μπορεί ο καθένας μας να κατεβάσει από το διαδίκτυο ||||||||download||| software that anyone of us can download from the Internet

και να τα εγκαταστήσει νόμιμα και δωρεάν στον υπολογιστή του. |||install them|legally||||computer| and install them on his computer legally and at no cost.

Ένα πρόγραμμα που χρησιμοποιήσαμε - ξέρετε όλοι τη Βικιπαίδεια. |||we used||||

Χρησιμοποιήσαμε το λογισμικό που τρέχει η Βικιπαίδεια, ||software|||| we used the software that Wikipedia is running,

το media wiki για να στήσουμε ένα κεντρικό σημειωματάριο, ||wiki|||set up|||notebook media wiki to setup a centralized notepad,

ένα μέρος δηλαδή στο οποίο μπορούσαμε να γράφουμε a place where we could all write

τα διάφορα πράγματα που αφορούσαν τη γενική γραμματεία. ||||related to|||secretariat about different things concerning the General Secretariat.

Αν προσλαμβάνατε έναν ακριβοπληρωμένο σύμβουλο |you hired||highly paid|consultant If you hired a well-paid consultant

αυτός θα σας έλεγε ότι είναι ένα αποθετήριο οργανωσιακής γνώσης. |||||||repository|organizational|knowledge he would say that this is a organizational knowledge repository.

Και αυτό ήταν. Τι βάζαμε εκεί πέρα μέσα; ||||we put||| And this is what it was. What did we put in there?

Έτσι, όταν μπορούσαμε, So, when we could,

κοιτάζαμε να δούμε ποιος ξέρει μια συγκεκριμένη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού, we were looking||||||||programming language we would see who knows a particular programming language,

έχει μια εξειδικευμένη γνώση, ||specialized| has some specialized knowledge,

βγαίναν όλες οι σελίδες αυτών των εργαζομένων. were coming out|||pages|||employees we would get the pages of these employees.

Αυτός ο ακριβοπληρωμένος σύμβουλος, για τον οποίο μίλαγα πριν, ||well-paid|consultant||||I was talking| This well-paid consultant that I was talking about,

θα σας έλεγε ότι αυτό είναι ένα σύστημα διαχείρισης ανθρωπίνου δυναμικού. ||||||||management|human|resources he would tell you that this is a human resource managing system.

Μόνο που δε μας πήρε χρόνια να το στήσουμε, ||||||||set up But it didn't take us years to build,

Αυτό ήταν σημαντικό, γιατί στο παρελθόν |||||past That was important, because in the past

για να μπορέσουμε να ξέρουμε πόση δουλειά έχουμε κάνει και πόση δουλειά μας μένει. so that we know how much work we've done and how much is left.

Μόνο όμως με έτοιμα προγράμματα ανοιχτού λογισμικού δεν μπορεί να προχωρήσει, ||||||||||proceed But we can't go on just with open source software,

χρειαζόμαστε και εξειδικευμένα προγράμματα. ||specialized|programs we need specialized software as well.

Το κακό είναι, όπως σας είπα και στην αρχή, The bad thing is, as I already said,

Τελικά τα μεγάλα έργα πληροφορικής του δημοσίου ||||information technology||public sector At the end, big public sector information technology projects

έχουν την ταχύτητα και την ευκινησία του ιπποπόταμου ||speed|||agility||hippopotamus have the speed and agility of a hippopotamus,

δεν προχωράνε, δε μας κάνανε τη δουλειά μας. |they proceed|||they did||| they don't go on, they don't do our job.
