Rapa-Nui

Era o domingo de páscoa do ano de 1722. O sol estava prestes a se por. Naquela região do pacífico estava o navio holandês Afrikaanske Galei, comandado pelo capitão Jacob Roggeveen.

A embarcação ja estava há meses em missão de exploração e comércio. Nessa etapa, haviam deixado o porto do Chile há vários dias e se encontravam agora em uma área isolada, onde tudo que se via era mar.

Porém, com o sol já quase no horizonte, um dos marinheiros dá o alerta de avistamento de terra.

Com a pouca luz do fim da tarde, tudo que puderam reconhecer ao analisar aquela pequena ilha foi pessoas de estaturas extraordinariamente grandes que estavam posicionados como quem pretendesse impedir o desembarque. Impressionado, o capitão optou por lançar âncoras a uma grande distância da ilha e aguardar o dia seguinte.

– Com a luz da manhã, através de suas lunetas, os tripulantes do Afrikaanske Galei, puderam observar que os gigantes ainda estavam nas mesmas posições e pessoas de tamanho normal movimentavam-se próximas aos gigantes. O capitão Jacob percebe, então, que se tratava de estátuas.

O dia seguinte

O Capitão Jacob, de acordo com o dia em qua avistou a ilha, lhe deu o nome de Ilha de Páscoa.

Não há registro no diário de bordo do Afrikaanske Galei sobre as estátuas terem amedrontado os tripulantes ao longe, sendo essa somente uma suposição de de algumas fontes.

Mas era algo impressionante. Um povo tribal sem acesso a ferramentas complexas ou tecnologia havia sido capaz de esculpir estátuas de pedra que pesavam mais de 10 toneladas e chegavam a 7 metros de altura e transportá-las posicionando-as por todo litoral da ilha.

Em seu diário de bordo, o capitão faz observações sobre as estátuas e o povo, porém, de forma superficial e com mais perguntas do que respostas. A cor da pele, os dentes e o biotipo dos habitantes da ilha chamaram a atenção do navegador, que escreveu no diário do navio:

“Essas pessoas têm membros bem proporcionados, com músculos grandes e fortes; eles são grandes em estatura, e sua cor de pele natural não é preta, mas amarelo pálido (…) Essas pessoas têm dentes brancos como a neve, com os quais eles são excepcionalmente bem prestados, mesmo os velhos e grisalhos, como vimos um quebrar uma dura noz com os dentes, cuja casca era mais grossa e mais resistente do que as nossas pedras de pêssego.

O cabelo de suas cabeças, e as barbas da maioria deles, eram curtos, embora alguns usassem cabelos longos, pendurado para baixo a parte de trás, ou entrançados e enrolados no topo da cabeça em uma trança, como os chineses na Batavia”

James Cook

Não foram muitas as informações trazidas pelos holandeses. Tão pouco pelos espanhóis, que chegaram à ilha em 1770 e só fizeram alguns poucos registros em seu diário de bordo.

No entanto, em 1774 chega o capitão James Cook.

Em uma estadia de apenas quatro dias, o renomado explorador britânico elaborou uma completa descrição da ilha e de seu povo, tendo a vantagem de contar com um taitiano cujo idioma polinésio era muito parecido com o falado na ilha, podendo assim trabalhar como tradutor.

Dentre as observações feitas por Cook, está o fato de que, pelo que pôde observar, a ilha contava com somente 600 ou 700 habitantes, o que era muito pouco… se comparado com os mais de 10000 habitantes que a ilha um dia comportou…

E aí inicia-se uma história de tragédia e muito mistério.

Rapa Nui

Com apenas 170 km2, Rapa Nui — que é o nome nativo da ilha de Páscoa e do povo que a habitava — se encontra isolada no Pacífico, tendo como continente mais próximo a América do Sul a 3500 km de distância. Seu vizinho mais próximo são as pequenas ilhas Pitcairn, que se encontram a quase 2000 km de distância.

Praticamente não haviam árvores quando chegou a ilha James Cook e as inúmeras e gigantes estátuas, que eram chamadas de Moai pelos Rapa Nui, estavam presentes por todo o litoral.

Apesar de alguns moais parecerem ser esculturas somente de cabeças humanas eles, na verdade, estavam parcialmente enterrados, com um corpo inteiro esculpido abaixo da terra e, vários deles, até com tatuagens.

Diversas outras esculturas também misteriosas e desenhos também podem ser encontrados pela ilha. E há também muitos hieróglifos, chamados de Rongorongo e que provavelmente era a forma de escrita dos Rapa Nui. O que querem dizer ao certo? Ninguém sabe, mas pela quantidade de inscrições, se pudessem ser traduzidas, talvez respondessem algumas da inúmeras perguntas que rondam a ilha e seu passado: A qual civilização pertenciam os primeiros habitantes que ali chegaram? E como foi possível uma tribo como aquela chegar numa ilha tão isolada no pacífico? O que são para que serviam os moais? E como, com ferramentas tão rudimentares, conseguiram transportar e posicionar os moais onde estão agora? E o mais importante: o que aconteceu na ilha que, depois de séculos, sua população baixou rapidamente de 10000 para menos de 100 habitantes em seu pior momento?

Os polinésios

Reza e lenda que a aproximadamente 1500 anos atrás, um rei chamado Hotu Matu'a, que significa o Grande Pai, certa vez sonhou que navegava até uma bela ilha. Resolveu então embarcar com toda sua família e navegar mar adentro. Depois de vários dias de viagem, ele avista Rapa Nui e a reconhece como a mesma ilha de seu sonho. E ali permanece com sua família.

Essa lenda não se afasta da provável realidade.

Havia no oceano pacífico um povo que ficou conhecido por sua grande capacidade de navegação fazendo longas viagens em alto mar muito antes dos Europeus. Trata-se dos polinésios.

Esse povo, que provavelmente veio da Ásia por volta de 3500 A.C., ocupava uma grande área de ilhas no pacífico, conhecida hoje como Polinésia, e era dividido em vários grupos étnicos, como os maoris, taitianos e samoanos.

A maestria dos polinésios no mar os fez serem chamados de Vikings do pacífico, e em suas longas viagens chegaram na Nova Zelândia, Hawaii e, ao que tudo indica, na Ilha de Páscoa.

A maioria dos linguistas e arqueólogos atribuem aos polinésios a descendência dos Rapa Nui por vários motivos, como fisionomia dos habitantes e o idioma semelhantes às demais ilhas polinésias. Porém algo chamou a atenção de alguns arqueólogos e botânicos: na Ilha de Páscoa havia plantação de batata doce. Já foi comprovado que a batata doce se originou da América do Sul, portanto, como foi parar na Ilha de Páscoa? Seriam os primeiros rapa-nui, na verdade, sulamericanos?

Para apimentar mais ainda essa teoria, há uma observação do Capitão James Cook sobre a superior técnica no trabalho com pedra na construção de muros e plataformas que sustentavam alguns moais. A semelhança com as construções de civilizações sul-americanas era evidente.

Porém, com mais evidências de que os rapa nui eram polinésios do que evidências de que eram sul americanos, a presença da batata doce e do conhecimento do trabalho com pedra acabam por criar mais teorias, como as de que, em algum momento dos primórdios da ilha, os Rapa Nui tiveram contato com as civilizações Sul Americanas.

A mais provável é de que os Polinésios, antes de chegar à Ilha de Páscoa, navegaram até à América do Sul. Depois de certo tempo resolveram voltar, levando com eles a batata doce e o conhecimento de construção. E ao chegar na Ilha de Páscoa, ficaram por lá.

Os Moai

Por volta do ano 1200 os rapa num começaram a produzir um peculiar monumento feito de rochas vulcânicas: os moais.

Essas gigantescas estátuas humanas variavam de tamanho, podendo chegar até mais de 7 metros de altura.

Centenas de moais foram produzidos entre os anos de 1200 e 1500 e, mesmo pesando mais de 10 toneladas cada, foram carregados e espalhados por todo o litoral da ilha, todos de costas para o mar, como se olhassem para as aldeias, o que acabou por fazer pesquisadores pensarem se tratar de estátuas religiosas. Porém, muitos sugerem também que a real função dos moais era funcionar como pára-raio, já que tempestades são frequentes naquela região.

A maioria das estátuas era posicionada sobre plataformas de pedra construídas com a intrigante técnica que se assemelha à engenharia sul americana.

Há ainda, no campo de produção de moais, muitas dessas estátuas incompletas, como se algo tivesse interrompido o trabalho.

Estranhamente, com exceção daqueles que foram enterrados até o pescoço, como pôde ser observado no ano the 1868, todos os moais estavam derrubados.

O que teria derrubado todos os moais da ilha? Alguns afirmam que clãs rivais derrubaram os moais uns dos outros, outros sugerem que terremotos foram os responsáveis pela queda dos moais. Porém, assim como a história do fim dos Rapa Nui, chegamos a mesma conclusão para a queda dos Moai: todas as teorias podem estar corretas.

Declínio

Por volta do ano de 1550 a população de Rapa Nui contava com aproximadamente 10000 habitantes. Até 1600 a produção de moais estava a todo vapor.

Mas nesses 122 anos que separam o ápice populacional e quase desaparecimento total dos Rapa Nui aconteceu algo. O que?

Várias árvores eram derrubadas para auxiliar na construção e transporte dos moais, o que rapidamente gerou erosão e terra infértil. A ilha não era mais auto- sustentável.

Enquanto a população sugava tudo o que lhe era possível dos recursos naturais, a fome iniciou o declínio da ilha. Os Rapa Nui em colapso, entraram em guerra. Clãs dizimavam uns aos outros, derrubavam moais e tentavam desesperadamente tomar o pouco que restava de recursos da ilha, marcando assim, o fim dos Rapa Nui, que tiveram seu golpe de misericórdia com a chegada dos europeus e suas doenças.

– Por muito tempo a Ilha de Páscoa — e sua história -serviu como um microcosmo para estudos e exemplos do que nos aguarda no planeta se continuarmos a depredá-lo. Os Rapa Nui se auto-destruíram.

Porém, estudos mais atuais sugerem que não foi bem assim.

Na verdade todas as explicações podem estar corretas, com exceção de que provavelmente não houve guerras devastadoras e que a chegada européia teve um papel muito maior na catástrofe do que a baixa de recursos naturais da ilha.

Por muitos séculos, a ilha se sustentou. Com o aumento da população, os recursos diminuíram e a população também, mas não o suficiente para acabar com os Rapa Nui.

A chegada dos Europeus trouxe doenças que matou inúmeros habitantes da ilha. Outros muitos foram levados posteriormente como escravos pelos peruanos.

E assim a catástrofe estava completa.

Realmente, é um microcosmo do que nos aguarda.

O Rongorongo

Ainda resta um mistério. Um mistério que, se desvendado, poderá desvendar todos os outros. Trata-se do Rongorongo, o idioma escrito dos Rapa Nui.

Estima-se que essa forma de escrita surgiu em torno de 1700, apesar de as lendas Rapa Nui afirmarem que o Grande Pai trouxe várias tábuas inscritas quando fundou a ilha.

O Rongorongo é um sistema de pictogramas e não foi encontrado em nenhum outro lugar do planeta, o que torna o idioma originário e exclusivo de Rapa Nui.

Ninguém nunca conseguiu traduzir as tábuas. E para piorar, conta-se que a maioria delas foi destruída a mando de missionários que instituíram que o idioma era pagão e os poucos anciãos que conseguiam ler e entender o rongorongo, temendo os missionários, se recusavam a traduzir para os pesquisadores.

Hoje não resta mais ninguém que compreende o Rongorongo e aquilo que poderia desvendar os mistérios da ilha, tornou-se outro grande mistério.
