Dei Gratia

O navio britânico Dei Gratia navegava em mar aberto pelo Atlântico. Ele havia zarpado de Nova York e rumava para a Europa sob o comando do Capitão David Reed Morehouse.

Quando estava a aproximadamente 400 milhas a leste do arquipélago de Açores, a tripulação do Dei Gratia avistou ao longe uma outra embarcação.

Tratava-se de um bergantim de dois mastros, de mais de 200 toneladas, que navegava de forma estranha, mudando de direção inexplicavelmente.

O capitão Morehouse deu ordens para se aproximar do outro navio, tentando se comunicar por sinais sonoros, sem obter resposta, até que pôde ler o nome da outra embarcação: era o Mary Celeste

Provavelmente o capitão do Dei Gratia não sabia, mas ele estava prestes a embarcar em um dos maiores mistérios náuticos de toda a história.

O Navio Fantasma

O Dei Gratia se emparelhou com o navio à deriva. Curiosamente não havia ninguém no controle do leme e nem no convés. Nem um som humano podia ser ouvido do navio.

O capitão ordenou, então, que embarcassem no Mary Celeste para investigar.

O navio estava em ótimas condições, com somente algumas velas rasgadas pelo mau tempo. Não havia sangue e nenhum outro tipo de sinal de luta.

No compartimento de carga, os 1701 barris de álcool que o Mary Celeste transportava, estavam bem armazenados e intactos.

Na sala de jantar pratos de uma refeição estavam sobre a mesa, ainda com comida, como se tivessem sido abandonados às pressas.

O diário de bordo do navio estava entre os pertences do capitão, e o último registro era de 10 dias antes, e não mencionava nada de estranho ou anormal.

Todos os pertences de todos os demais tripulantes também estavam a bordo, o que deixava a situação mais misteriosa ainda.

Somente duas coisas que faltavam chamaram a atenção da tripulação do Dei Gratia: o bote salva vidas e uma das alavancas da bomba de drenagem contra inundações.

Não havia uma explicação de porque a tripulação abandonaria um navio em quase perfeitas condições e, por isso, o sumiço do bote salva-vidas deixava tudo mais intrigante.

Com tudo intacto e organizado no Mary Celeste, a tripulação do Dei Gratia sentia-se em um navio fantasma, que, que tudo indicava, estava navegando por si só nos últimos dez dias.

O espólio

Lá chegando, tornou-se o primeiro suspeito do caso. Ao entregar o Mary Celeste para as autoridades e requerer o seguro, o oficial britânico Frederick Solly-Flood suspeitou do Capitão Morehouse e sua tripulação, instaurando um longo inquérito para investigar o caso.

Porém restava o grande mistério: o que aconteceu com o Mary Celeste e onde estava sua tripulação?

A tripulação

O Mary Celeste era comandado pelo capitão Benjamin Spooner Briggs, que viajava com sua esposa Sarah e sua filha de dois anos de idade, Sofia. Sete homens compunham o restante da tripulação, sendo dois deles alemães.

A vida do capitão Briggs fora investigada, buscando alguma pista sobre o caso. Porém, tudo o que puderam descobrir era que Briggs era um marinheiro experiente, respeitado e muito cauteloso, que, nas palavras de Solly-Flood, “não havia nenhum indício de que ele pudesse fazer algo irracional no comando de uma embarcação”.

Os dois marinheiros alemães, os irmãos Volkert a Boye Lorenzen, também caíram sob suspeita, já que seus pertences não foram encontrados a bordo. Mas a suspeita diminuiu quando descobriram que eles haviam perdido seus pertences algumas semanas antes da viagem.

No final, não havia nenhuma evidência ou motivação para nenhum membro da tripulação que explicasse o mistério.

Porém, uma sombra pairava sobre o navio. Era seu passado. O que para os mais místicos, indicava que Mary Celeste era um navio amaldiçoado.

O Amazon

Construído em 1860 e inaugurado em 1861 com o nome de Amazon, o navio já registrou indícios de sua má sorte na primeira viagem. Com destino à Inglaterra, o capitão McLellan ficou gravemente doente, fazendo com que a tripulação interrompesse a viagem retornando aos Estados Unidos, onde seu comandante morreu pouco depois.

Trocando de comandantes, o navio sofreu diversos pequenos acidentes, inclusive afundando um outro bergantim após uma colisão.

Até que em 1867, uma tempestade jogou a embarcação na orla, deixando o Amazon tão danificado, que seus proprietários concluíram que não valia a pena consertar.

Os destroços foram comprados por Alexander McBean, na Nova Escócia, que vendeu para outro negociante.

O navio destruído passou, então, de mão em mão até ser completamente reformado em 1868 e finalmente vendido para um consórcio, cujo sócio majoritário era James Winchester. Em 1872, o consórcio era composto também por Benjamin Spooner Brigs, que se tornara o comandante da embarcação, que novamente havia sido reformada completamente, aumentando sua área e capacidade.

O navio abandonado

Teorias

Durante as décadas seguintes, várias teorias foram levantadas sobre o que poderia ter acontecido com o Mary Celeste e sua tripulação.

Algumas explicações absurdas sugerem monstros marinhos ou até mesmo uma maldição.

Pensaram também se tratar de piratas, mas o fato de o navio estar intacto e nada ter sido roubado, invalida essa hipótese.

Chegou-se a cogitar também um motim. Mas por que todos abandonariam o navio? E para onde foram?

Para seguir a teoria de que o navio realmente fora abandonado pela tripulação, com ou sem motim, deve-se descobrir por quê abandonaram o Mary Celeste e para onde foram? O bote teria também naufragado? Abandonar um navio é a ordem mais crítica que o capitão pode dar, como o último recurso para uma situação extrema. Que situação foi essa?

Ele conta que Briggs, durante a viagem, havia ordenado que o carpinteiro de bordo construísse um pequeno deque para sua filha. Certo dia, o capitão estava em uma discussão ferrenha com um dos tripulantes sobre a possibilidade de nadar vestido com roupas e botas. Para provar seu ponto, Briggs, acompanhado de outros dois marinheiros, pulou no mar para nadar em volta do navio. O restante da tripulação assistia tudo do convés. Um dos marinheiros deu um grito agonizante, provavelmente devido a uma mordida de tubarão. Todos que estavam a bordo, inclusive Sara com sua filha no colo, se concentraram no pequeno deque recém-construído para ver o que tinha acontecido. O convés não suportou o peso e cedeu, derrubando toda a tripulação na água, onde foi atacada por tubarões.

Fosdyk — milagrosamente — sobreviveu e se agarrou a um dos pedaços de madeira do deque e a correnteza lhe arrastou por alguns dias até a costa da África.

Essa história, provavelmente falsa, assim como várias outras hipóteses, acaba por gerar mais perguntas ainda.

O fato é que nunca mais nenhum membro da tripulação fora visto.

O navio amaldiçoado

Após o misterioso desaparecimento de sua tripulação, o navio que navegou dez dias sozinho teve seu destino selado. Com a supersticiosa cultura dos homens do mar, o navio causava medo em muitas pessoas, que passaram a evitar comprar mercadorias que haviam sido transportadas pelo Mary Celeste e até de se aproximar da embarcação. Marinheiros se recusavam a navegar no navio e compradores de bergantins desistiam do negócio quando viam se tratar do Mary Celeste.

Assim como no início de sua história, o navio passou de mãos em mãos, gerando prejuízo atrás de prejuízo. Até que em novembro de 1884, seu último comandante, Gilman C. Parker, supostamente armou uma fraude com um grupo de carregadores. Abasteceram o navio com carga sem valor, porém registraram no manifesto para a seguradora uma carga preciosa. Parker, então, durante a viagem, joga o bergantim propositalmente contra um recife, destruindo e afundando o Mary Celeste, sobrando poucos destroços a serem recuperados.
