Here is the Tower - an avant-garde monument,
which the constructivist Vladimir Tatlin intended to erect for the glory of the revolution.
These were the first years of Soviet power,
when artists thought their time had finally come.
However, the Tower will never be built,
and the creators will very quickly begin to be repressed.
How hopes were replaced by disappointment and fear - now we will tell.
The revolutionaries dreamed not only of overthrowing the tsar and God -
they wanted to whip up history, break into the future, overcome nature,
to create a new man and a utopian society.
However, this dream of the future had a downside -
and very archaic, naive, almost religious.
The revolutionaries believed that they could change the whole universe easily and quickly,
that communism is almost the kingdom of God on earth,
that a wise leader will bring justice and order.
Such a conflicting vision of the future
can be found in the poems of Mayakovsky and the architecture of constructivism,
the films of Eisenstein and Vertov and the works of Rodchenko and Lissitzky.
And not only among the intellectuals:
their hatred of capitalism and naive faith in the best
shared by recent peasants,
who moved to the city and became proletarians.
And many other social groups
found no place in the old world
and became the lever of the revolution.
For a long time, modernization and archaism could not be reconciled.
Of course, the archaic won in culture and society:
in words we are building a new just society -
but in fact we are restoring serfdom in the form of collective farms,
we create a cult of the leader - Stalin
and offer him gigantic human sacrifices.
Cultural figures were also squeezed in this vice.
Someone tried not to betray revolutionary ideals - like Mayakovsky.
And someone never fell for Soviet rhetoric -
like Bulgakov or those who emigrated immediately after the revolution.
But most of the rest were fellow travelers.
They were morally sympathetic to the changes:
from industrialization to the ideas of women's equality, -
but did not turn a blind eye to the horrors of what was happening:
from the Civil War to the Great Terror.
Platonov and Zoshchenko, Eisenstein and Shostakovich
trying to seize the moment and speak the language of the new reality.
They are chroniclers of both the birth of great hopes and their death.
But both are not alien to them,
both of these emotions they missed through themselves.
Thanks to this synthesis, masterpieces are born,
many of them are uncensored.
But the closer to the Great terror and war,
the less artists believe in a just Soviet system.
Someone was shot
someone was bullied
but some people got used to it.
New creators now, as in a test tube,
bring up official Unions of writers, artists and so on.
But there will be no geniuses among them.
To replace the avant-garde breakthrough into the future
came the climate of mature totalitarianism.
