Real Conversation #9: Sports (Gabriel & Lexy)
GABRIEL: Ok Lexy, so today let's talk about Vancouver. Have you lived in Vancouver all your life?
LEXY: Yes, I lived in Vancouver all my life. It's a great, great city, I love being by the mountains and the ocean.
GABRIEL: Yeah it's a gorgeous city, and there is many activities that you can do. Do you ski or snowboard?
LEXY: Yes I ski, I tried snowboarding once but that was quite difficult. But I enjoy skiing I also picked up snowshoeing and that's a lot of fun.
GABRIEL: How often do you go?
LEXY: I've only gone twice so far. Yes twice so far. I am NOT an expert yet, but it's been great so far it's a good workout and you get to go outdoors for hours and hours and it's a lot of fun
GABRIEL: Nice, do you go with friends, usually?
LEXY: yes, I usually go with my friends, and this weekend I'm going to go to the mountain with my mother.
GABRIEL: Nice, that's excellent. Because I guess it's a bit safer to actually go with a group of people as opposed to do on your own because they may be bears up at the mountains. Is that accurate or?
LEXY: Yes that's true. It's also good to go with someone else in case anything happens. It's also smart to bring your cell phone with you, in case you get lost and need to call someone or call for help.
GABRIEL: Interesting! However I am guessing that when you go snowshoeing you probably go to a pretty safe designated area and don't go actually exploring in somewhat, how would I say that,
LEXY: out of bounds
GABRIEL: out of bounds, yes, out of bounds!
LEXY: yeah it's never smart to go out of bounds at all. But just in case, you know if anything happens it's always good to be prepared. It's always good to bring a snack with you in case you get hungry or lost.
GABRIEL: of course, that's true! I've gone snowshoeing once with a group of friends and it was a lot of fun but at the same time I found it a little bit boring in comparison to the skiing for instance. But I did enjoy my time and I think we were out there for like 3 hours and I did get quite hungry at the end. So it was nice to bring some snacks for sure.
LEXY: Actually yes snowshoeing it depends, you know for some people it can be boring, some people not. Did you know that you can actually run in snow shoes?
GABRIEL: I did not know that.
LEXY: there are special snow shoes that you can get and you can do races up the mountain. I haven't gotten there yet.
GABRIEL: Are you still practicing, how do you say this, just getting used to snow shoeing before you start running. Snow running.
LEXY: Yes I love running, so I'm going to work my way up to running in snow shoes that will be fun.
GABRIEL: Do you go running often, jogging?
LEXY: Yes I go running about 4-5 times a week. I did a half marathon last year which was great and I'm going to start training for a marathon for the summer.
GABRIEL: OK, interesting... and so you do that every week?
LEXY: Yes.
GABRIEL: That's quite fantastic, I just you know, often I like trying to work out at least twice a week. However I have been very lazy recently and after a long time that I didn't work out I went to the gym and had a back workout and then I was just sore for like a month, it was incredible and maybe because I'm getting a little bit older.
GABRIEL: But anyway, so now that's great and how do you how to find the time to go in the morning? Running do you go here in North Vancouver?
LEXY: I go running, usually in the morning when it's light out. It's always good to run when it's light out. I run in North Vancouver by the water and also in West Vancouver at Ambleside, its really fun.
GABRIEL: Oh yes that's a beautiful place. And do you do... do you also go down to Dundarave?
LEXY: Yes, I do a circuit that's approximately 9 kilometers long.
GABRIEL: 9 kilometers everyday?
LEXY: Not every day, other times I go to the gym and run and then when it's light out on the weekends I go for a run.
GABRIEL: That's quite impressive, that's nice!
LEXY: I try. I try.
GABRIEL: That's good! And aside from snow shoeing and running do you do any other sports?
LEXY: I play soccer every Wednesday, I play soccer with an organized group of friends at the University of British Columbia.
GABRIEL: oh excellent, okay so is that, it's not the university's team. So it is just a group of friends that plays in a league. Is that correct?
LEXY: some friends, yes it's called urban rec. Urban recreational sports. so you sign up and it's, each season is a few months long so every Wednesday night we play for about an hour it's a lot of fun.
GABRIEL: That sounds like fun, do you have practices as well or just games?
LEXY: Just games.
GABRIEL: and what position do you play?
LEXY: Defense.
GABRIEL: Defense? Ah, I see... Excellent!
LEXY: Everyone likes to play center, forward and I'm the one that always says I'll play defense so it's good, I like it.
GABRIEL: Nice! And do you do you like watching soccer as well?
LEXY: Yes I do you like watching soccer our local team which is the Whitecaps I've gone to a few of their games and that's a lot of fun, yes.
GABRIEL: I've heard about their group of supporters, I actually forgot their name now. I think that, but they have like a very serious group of supporters that always has these chants and all these things and I heard it's a lot of fun... I haven't been to one myself. But I intend to go to one of them in the future.
