Cînd Nicu se dezmetici din visele ce-l smulseseră împrejurărilor vieței lui, luna albea aproape ștearsă în petecul de cer din stînga turnului Colței.

Doi gardiști, văzînd că se face ziuă, se înfășuraseră în mantalele lor și dormeau pe treptele muzeului. Cîte un pantalon-creț, calfă de măcelar cu mînecile răsfrînte, se ivea pe strada Colței și se grăbea cu pasuri răsunătoare către piața mică.

Nicu se întoarse acasă încet; șalele și spinarea toată îi erau înțepenite de răceala nopței. Cîțiva camarazi din facultate îl întîlniră în dosul pasagiului și crezînd că iese de la o petrecere, voiau cu orice preț să-l tîrască cu ei la "Pisica-Albă", — pentru a se drege. Dar el se grăbi să se depărteze, în urmă-i cu rîsetele și glumele sărate și nesărate ale acestora.

Realitatea îl relua în stăpînire. Iată-l din nou căzut din înălțimea visurilor ca o pasăre cu aripa ruptă de alica vînătorului. Iată-l, din nou, biet student sărac, vara cu pantaloni de iarnă și iarna fără palton și cu ghetele căscate la vîrfuri, prin noroiul cleios al uliței...

Pe deasupra, prins de niște friguri neașteptate, fu silit să nu se întoarcă la cancelarie decît a treia zi. Cînd reapăru, mustrările ce-l așteptau izbucniră. Cum? dumnealui își închipuia că treburile statului pot să stea pe loc fiindcă i-a venit pofta să se bolnăvească? Desigur că lucrurile nu pot să meargă astfel... Dacă e bolnăvicios, coconaș, să facă bine să-și dea dimisia... Sunt cincisprezece candidați care așteaptă — și toți cu bacalaureat — iar în viitor vor fi și licențiați cari să scoală limba după așa bunătate de slujbă. Numai nouăzeci lei și cîțiva pe lună, deocamdată, e adevărat; dar greutatea e să te vezi în pîinea statului, că, apoi, departe mergi... Mai pune că poți să ajungi și subșef de birou și să te însori... Cine nu-și mărită fata după o slujbă?... Te mai așteaptă, în sfîrșit, spre bătrînețe, și drepturi la pensie, așa că, de la șasezeci de ani încolo — dacă-i atingi — poți să dai cu căciula în cîini. Dar el mai cu seamă? El? Nu era oare și student la Drept și nu-i înlesnea slujba putința să pună mîna pe diploma de advocat și să taie palavre nesupărat de nimeni? Și lucrurile stînd astfel, dumnealui, în loc să fie recunoscător șefilor, în loc să prescrie ordine și circulari — să-și facă datoria — se îmbolnăvea... Să bage însă de seamă, de rîndul ăsta i se trece, dar cînd i se va mai întîmpla va fi înlocuit.

Ordine de acest fel sunt, în adevăr, de mare însemnătate, căci dau loc la lucrări ca cea care urmează, în cancelaria prefecturilor către care sunt îndreptate:

Șefii se arătară cîtăva vreme mulțumiți. Aveau și de ce: căci, pe cînd colegii lui Nicu fumau țigări sau vorbeau despre viitoarea fată pe care aveau de gînd s-o pună la mînă, iar, cîteodată, și despre cămătarii cărora le trăseseră chiulul, el singur rămînea neclintit, totdauna aplecat peste masă și cu spinarea încovoiată asupra lucrărilor de făcut.

Zilele treceau acum pentru dînsul la fel. Venea la cancelarie la opt dimineața, se așeza dinaintea călimărului de pămînt ars și — mașină de prescris, — scuipa, slovă cu slovă, binefăcătoarele dispozițiuni ministeriale "întocmai cu spiritul și litera legei". Dar dacă nu mai lipsea de la cancelarie, închipuirea lui nu-l ducea mai puțin departe de locul unde se afla și departe de viața pe care o trăia.

Ca și pe banca din fața Universităței, Dereanu uita în acele clipe tot și zilnic își călărea cîte un Ducipal nou. De cîte ori nu se văzuse, bunăoară — vis între alte visuri ale lui — intrat în armată ca voluntar și tocmai cînd războiul se declarase. Mobilizarea îl îmbătase atît de mult încît nici nu știa cum ajunsese la graniță și cum el și armata română o trecuseră. Destul că acum știa că munții au rămas în urmă și că el se afla în mijlocul unei cîmpii întinse și printre camarazii lui de soartă și de glorie, desfășurați în număr de două sute cincizeci mii, în ordine de bătaie. Dincolo de apă, spre dreapta, cîmpia se urca pe nesimțite și se făcea deluroasă. Acele părți de locuri fuseseră mai cu seamă puternic întărite de aripa stîngă a dușmanului. Căpetenia oastei noastre, în loc să ocolească pozițiunea și să atace, cu toate mijloacele de care dispunea, aripa dreaptă ce era mai slabă, se izbi de ele. Greșeala lui cea mare fu, apoi, că-și prăpădea armata prin pipăiri treptate ale terenului, netrimițînd în foc regimentele de infanterie decît rînd pe rînd. Dușmanii cîștigau terenul și, în curînd, lupta luă o așa față încît, cînd generalul voi să-și desfășoare toate puterile, nu mai putu s-o facă.

În mijlocul fumului și gloanțelor, printre obuzele care vîjîiau și se crăpau în cădere, Nicu nu-și pierduse cumpătul. El își da de minune seama că bătălia era pierdută. Soldații și începuseră să dea înapoi, iar mulți fugeau.

Din fericire, izbit în inimă de un glonț, generalul căzu. Însă în clipa cînd groaza și deznădejdea își făceau drumul printre șirurile românilor, Nicu, care văzuse primejdia și care ridicase de jos chipiul divizionarului, punîndu-și-l în cap, se află, dintr-un salt, călare și luă comanda armatei.

Mișcarea ce se produse în rîndurile noastre fu dintre cele mai dătătoare de avînt. Cea mai mare parte dintre soldați se repezi pe urmele lui ca un troian ce se surpă de pe un munte. Ura! Iureș! Cei dintîi din soldați cad. Cad și rîndurile ce vin după ei. Dar Dereanu, printre fum, se ridică în scările șelei. Statura îi este măreață și gestul magnetic. Asaltul ce se dă pozițiunilor în care dușmanul s-a retranșat este hotărîtor. Pe români ii așteaptă poate o moarte sigură, dar gloria cea mai nepieritoare le va duce numele printre veacuri. Cîteva regimente atacă atunci în coastă pozițiunile armatei protivnice. Dereanu înfige cel dintîi steagul românesc pe una dintre ele. Zdrobiți de toată artileria noastră, inamicii bat în retragere. Goana ce li se dă e pentru ei cumplită. Învălmășeala le încurcă rîndurile. Gloanțele puștelor și proiectilele mitralierelor îi seceră ca o grindină. Morții abia li se pot număra și, spre seară, oștirea noastră tăbărește pe cîmpul de bătaie.

Ca un glob de aur luna strălucea

Și pe-o vale verde...

O, triumf! O, glorie! Zilele lui Mihai Viteazu au reînviat. După încheierea păcei, Dereanu reintră în capitala, din care plecase simplu soldat, în mijlocul flăcărilor dragostei populare. I se strigă: hura! i se aștern covoare sub copitele calului și florile răpăiesc de la ferestre peste capul și corpul lui.

Și i se comunică înlocuirea. Greșelile ce i se strecurau în transcrieri erau, în adevăr, prea mari. De trei ori i se întîmplase ca, în loc de: "întocmai cu spiritul și litera legei", să pună "întocmai ca legea și spiritul ei". Alteori, cu de la sine putere, schimbase unele formule. Nicu auzea aceste vorbe, dar i se părea că-l lovesc tot atîtea gloanțe. Sudori ca ale morței îl coprindeau, și, ca într-un vis, se ridica de pe scaun, apoi desprinzîndu-și dintr-un cuier pălăria, își lua umbrela și ieșea în curte.

Se ducea înainte, fără nici un scop, era cu ochii deschiși, și nu vedea, se lovea de cîte un om și de altul, răvășuia pe rînd ulițele, și părea că e un nenorocit care, deși umblă, doarme.

Iar cînd se prăvălea în aceste adevăruri, mila lui era înlocuită de răutate. Dacă ar fi putui, ar fi nimicit tot ce este, ar fi trimis în nirvana pe cei buni deopotrivă cu cei răi. Albul ochilor i se roșea atunci de sînge; vocea i se făcea strigătoare, și închizîndu-și degetele peste palmele mîinilor, amenința cu îndîrjirea pumnilor cerul și pămîntul.

Obișnuiții cafenelei — stîlpii — îi dau ocol, îl întărîtau cu o vorbă batjocoritoare. Alții, mai neghiobi, se prefăceau că cugetă la fel cu el, îi exaltau mișcările sufletești și, pe furiș, își făceau cu ochiu, rîdeau pe înfundate. Dintr-o cafenea în alta, Dereanu își petrecea astfel vremea. Dar alte dăți bătea podul de dimineață pînă seara, între grădina Episcopiei și piața Constantin-Vodă, doar de-o vîna de la vreun cunoscut sau prieten un leu-doi, ce i se dau mai mult de milă decît ca împrumut. Problema cea mare, cestiunea de viață sau de moarte era însă pentru el cea pe care trebuia s-o dezlege de treizeci de ori pe lună și anume: aflarea unui adăpost unde să poată dormi o noapte. Și cînd nu-l descoperea din vreme, cînd seara îl apuca fără dînsul, după ce trecea în șir cafenea după cafenea, era silit să ia în revizie birturile prin care chiolhangii se întîrziau pană dinspre ziuă, să se alăture de ei și să bea cît i se turna în pahar, iar, la urmă, să-i întovărășească prin localuri patentate, fericit dacă vreunul, trăsnit de vin, îl poftea la el acasă spre a găsi acolo un pat sau mai puțin de atît, un scaun.
