Nicu Dereanu se născuse în Ploiești. El era nepotul unui fost ministru. Își făcuse liceul în București, luase bacalaureatul și fusese numit copist la un minister, prin stăruința unchiului său.

Pe lîngă aceasta, el urma la Drept — cînd urma. Nu e mai puțin adevărat că Nicu, deși nemerea rar la cursuri, cunoștea de minune clădirea de peste drum de statuia lui Mihai Viteazul, călare pe breazul, adică pe un cal mic cu coada mare și ținînd în mîna stîngă un goșgogea topor cu care tot amenință, de cînd e pus acolo, Universitatea, iar îndeosebi, sălile Facultăței de drept. Mai ales seara îi plăcea lui Nicu să se așeze pe banca din turnătoria Lemaître, în fața Universităței, de unde privea vîrful clădirei, coronat cu un vultur de ciment de Portland, refractar la igrasie.

În sus și în jos, cît și pe dinaintea lui, tineri cu ghete englezești, și cu vestoane ce abia trec de talie, se amestecau cu bătrîni ciudați la înfățișare, printre cîrdurile de femei cu rochi la modă. Vorbe și rîsete se schimbau de la o grupă la alta, iar trăsurile începeau să treacă spre Calea Victoriei, cu feciorii de bani gata în ele, fără să se întîrzieze prea mult prin oraș, cărau în toate nopțile averea părinților la Herestrău și la vila regală. Nicu, așezat pe banca lui, mai adesea nici nu auzea și nici nu vedea nimic. Ochii lui mari și negri împrumutau fachirilor nemișcarea lor, pe cînd, cu gîndul, se ducea spre lumi cu totul altele decît ale vieței zilnice. Privirile lui erau răpite, cîteodată, și de vedenii mai pămîntești. Statuia lui Heliade avea, între altele, darul să-l farmece. Și cu toate că nu știa că acest monument se datorește celui mai mare sculptor al Italiei de astăzi, el nu se lăsa să fie tîrît de criticile scitice ale cărturarilor cu vază care nu găseau cuvinte să batjocorească pe împietritul uriaș, în ura lor împotriva celui care întemeiase nu numai limba și literatura română, dar înviase și sufletul latin între Carpați și Dunăre. Simțirea lui pricepea măreția și frumusețea acestei statui, cu care, aproape că nu se poate potrivi nici o altă operă de artă a sculpturei din zilele de astăzi. Ca un tribun care își încheia discursul, așa Heliade de pe soclul lui de marmoră își încheia viața cu o firească și blajină plecare a capului și corpului în fața poporului pentru a cărui redeșteptare luptase atît.

Și acum i se părea lui Nicu că îi rostește dumnezeiasca marmoră: "Ce pot oare să vă mai dau cînd m-am dat vouă întreg?"

Oh! Heliade! – Dar pentru ce n-ar fi și el un urmaș al lui? pentru ce nu i-ar crește și lui aripi sufletești care să-i ducă într-o zi numele, oricît de necunoscut ar fi astăzi, în inima fiecărui român? E adevărat că, deocamdată, nu era decît un biet student și un mic, foarte mic, slujbaș. Dar Heliade? Ce fusese oare? — Iar, mai mult: de la cine și în ce școli învățase carte? Nu începuse să ia cunoștinți de citire, bucherind Alexandria, împrejurul Tîrgoviștei, împreună cu niște ciobani, dînd noaptea roată pe lîngă un foc? Apoi Bolintineanu? Cum începuse și el și unde ajunsese? Mari, Doamne! au fost oamenii ăștia de care rîd ticăloșii de acum...

Și visurile ce-l ademeneau, i se așezau pe frunte ca niște porumbei de lumină ori se făceau privighetori cu cîntece nemaiauzite. El trăia, astfel, clipe în care i se părea că stelele se coboară pînă la dînsul, ori că, dimpotrivă, se urca el singur pînă la acea spuză de aur și de pietre scumpe, și că pierde pămîntul din vedere. Iar cînd se cobora de acolo în lumea tutulor, ce n-ar fi fost în stare să facă și unde n-ar fi putut să ajungă? Poet, legist, orator, el se vedea pe rînd de toate. Și de ce nu? Poet, bunăoară, — ei! Care școlar n-are astăzi cîte o dragoste în inimă și cîte o presimțire cumplită că, odată cu căderea frunzelor... Și care școlar nu se grăbește să-și pună aceste simțiri în versuri și să dea fuga cu ele pe la gazete? Dar legist? Nu e aceasta și mai ușor? Nu naște tot românul advocat, după cum naște poet? De altminteri, nu e statornicit un principiu: că fiecare cetățean are deplina cunoștință a legilor, și nu el singur este legiuitor, de vreme ce contractul între părți e socotit ca lege? Și, tot așa, cu privire la orice. Cît despre măreața carieră a armelor, nu naște oare fiecare cetățean soldat și nu poate să ajungă fiecare general sau chiar căpetenie a căpetenielor? Urcarea culmilor științifice i se părea, la drept vorbind, ceva mai grea. Dar dacă era vorba să te gîndești mai bine, nu tocmai membrii Institutului Franței sau ai Societății regale științifice din Londra au făcut descoperirile cele mari...

El, Dereanu, n-are decît să vrea, spre a face ca numele lui să răsune peste tot. Pe tărîmul unor asemenea descoperiri se simțea mai cu seamă tare. Așa, între altele, cîte zile nu-și bătuse el capul să ajungă la rezolvarea problemei mișcărei prin mișcare. Cărbunii, electricitatea, aerul comprimat, trebuiau lăsate la o parte. Ele, pe lîngă că dau naștere la cheltuieli ce întrec rezultatul atins, mai sunt și izvoarele unor sume de întîmplări nenorocite. Fumul de cărbuni este, de altă parte, și de natură să prăpădească sănătatea. Cu totul altfel ar merge lucrurile dacă el, necunoscutul de azi, și omul de care poate se va vorbi mîine în lumea întreagă, ar găsi pe cineva care să înțeleagă marea lui descoperire, pe care a întemeiat-o pe un principiu atît de puternic. Desigur că, la început, mulți au căutat să-l zdruncine în credința lui. El însuși s-a îndoit, vreme lungă, că-și va duce plăsmuirea la capăt, bun. Adesea, mintea omenească se înșeală. Descoperitorii merg, de altfel, pe dibuite, căci știința sfîrșește acolo unde născocirea începe. Fapt este de asemeni că istoria feluritelor izbînzi îndeplinite pe tărîmul științific arată cît este de potrivnică lumea îndrăznelilor și îndrăzneților. Fulton se duce la Napoleon I spunîndu-i că a găsit, cu ajutorul aburului, un mijloc de mișcare — drumurile-de-fier — mijloc care-și bate joc de depărtări, care nu ține socoteala de dealuri și văi și de orice fel de alte piedeci. Fulton nu este, cu toate aceste, pentru Napoleon, decît un nebun. El rîde, dă din umeri și ajunge la Waterloo. Daguerre, un alt nebun, înfățișează Institutului Franței o amănunțită tălmăcire a descoperirei pe care zicea că a făcut-o. Dar secretarul învățatului așezămînt ia în răspăr descoperirea lui și hotărăște că si acest Daguerre, dacă nu este un nebun, este totuși un păcălici.

Firește că totul, prin urmare, povățuia pe Nicu să-și dovedească, atît lui cît și lumei, că nu s-a înșelat. Și iată pentru ce de cîte ori se așeza pe banca din fața Universităței, închipuirea și mintea lui, ce alunecau încoa și încolo, se întorceau mai des spre mașina pe care, din gînd, o întocmise cu o nespusă desăvîrșire. Iar că această locomotivă nouă se va mișca și că iuțeala ce va cîștiga va fi mai mare chiar de cum e cea pe care o dă aburul, nu mai era îndoială. Așa că Nicu o și vedea de sus și pînă jos înfăptuită și așezată pe șine, și se vedea pînă și pe el, nici mai mult nici mai puțin decît în Gara de Nord, jobenat și înmănușat, și gata să urce pe noul balaur de oțel și de foc ce avea să-i poarte în veci de veci numele în slăvi. Negru de lume, peronul gărei i se arăta atunci. Bucureștii întregi erau în picioare. Delegații presei își făceau cu greu loc printre mulțime. Îmbulzeala era nepomenită și, în mijlocul ei, multe doamne leșinau. Mulțimea începea chiar să schimbe ghionturi cu gardiștii. Prefectul poliției se repezea în biroul telegrafic și cerea grabnica sosire a pompelor. Căci nici un public nu se astîmpără mai ușor cu apă ca cel bucureștean. Dar semnalul de plecare al trenului cu care trebuia să se facă încercarea descoperirei lui Dereanu era gata să fie dat. Nu se mai aștepta decît regele. Nicu urca în vremea aceasta pe locomotiva lui și, fără voie, un zîmbet trufaș i se arăta la colțul buzelor.

Entuziasmul ce trecea peste o parte a mulțimei o făcea atunci să-și ridice pălăriele și să izbucnească în strigăte și urale.

Trăsura regelui străbătea însă în curtea gărei, iar împrejurul ei se făcea pe loc un gol. Regele nu era înăuntru. Un adjutant îl înlocuia, și cu toate aceste, zîmbetele înalte el le împărțea. Roșu și gras sub livreaua curței, vizitiul întorcea caii și trăgea lîngă scară.

De sub geamlîcul ce adăpostea vagoanele la care se afla înhămată faimoasa locomotivă, o scurtă șuierătură răsuna și, aproape în aceeași clipă, trenul ce se zguduia se punea în mișcare. Încet, la început, și apoi din ce în ce mai iute, el, într-o vreme de necrezut de mică, se micșora și se pierdea în depărtare spre nesfîrșita mirare și încremenire a celor din gară. Strigătul mulțimei fu uimitor de măreț. Dereanu, care de pe locomotiva lui îl auzea, simți că privirea i se împăiejenează de bucurie. În picioare și cu mîinile încleștate de pereții platformei, veni o clipă cînd el se simți aproape Dumnezeu. Căci iată-l, în adevăr, iată-l stăpîn deplin pe soarta lui pe care o ținea acum strivită sub tălpi. "Mai iute! mai iute!" erau cuvintele ce izbucneau dintre buzele lui, pe cînd mișcările mîinilor lui aiurau printre vîntul care-l izbea. Ce? îi spunea cugetarea — lumea nu era să fie de astăzi a lui? Și n-avea numele lui să cutreiere pămîntul trîmbițat de mii și mii de glasuri? Iar pînă la moarte, îl mai aștepta oare altceva decît îndeplinirea tuturor voințelor și dorințelor lui? Decît chiar viciurile, ce, treptat, aveau să-l copleșească, schimbate de oameni în virtuți înalte sau, cel mult, în mici greșeli nedespărțite de firea tuturor oamenilor mari. Aur! putere a puterilor și glorie a gloriilor — zeități ce ridicați pe cei pe care îi ocrotiți deasupra oricăror altora — voi pentru care nu este altă lege și altă morală decît cea pe care o hotărîți voi, iată-vă, își zicea tînărul, iată-vă, în stăpînirea mea, în stăpînirea unui Nicu Dereanu!

Și trenul ce aluneca repede se întrecea cu iuțeala vîntului, ajungea aproape pe a gîndului, se prăvălea peste văi și cîmpuri ca o furtună. Țăranii de pe marginea șoselei care-l vedeau trecînd, rămîneau încremeniți și se cruceau. Orașele, ori satele, cît se iveau în stînga și în dreapta lui, se făceau nevăzute cît clipea din ochi. Plopii argintii ce se deșirau pe țărmul unui rîu cu maluri nesipoase, păreau că se topesc în unul singur, ce era neîncetat dinaintea ferestrelor vagoanelor. Dar cu cît se scurta drumul dintre tren si gara orașului unde era să se oprească, pe atît și chipul lui Dereanu se încrunta. Semeția ce, adineauri încă, îl făcea să nu se mai potrivească cu nici un om de pe pămînt, îl părăsea. Încleștate pe manivela frîului de oprire, mîinile lui își sporeau zadarnic sălbăticia puterei pe care o desfășurau. Dintr-o pricină sau dintr-alta, acest frîu era ca și cum n-ar fi fost. S-ar fi crezut chiar că mersul îngrozitor își mărește iuțeala în loc să și-o domolească. La curbe, locomotiva și vagoanele săreau pe șine și amenințau cu deraiarea. Stația unde trenul era să se oprească licărise numai o clipă pe dinaintea ochilor lui Dereanu și pierise în zare. În fața și în urma lui, el nu mai zărea decît alba panglică a șoselei cu cele două șine ale ei ce se duceau către nehotărîtele zări ale cîmpiei, pe care o tăiau în două.
