Cometa lui Odorescu - Palatul fermecat

Odorescu era un băiat bun. Scurt, cu dispozițiuni napoleoniane ale pîntecului, și cu toate aceste poet, poet în puterea cuvîntului. Locuia la o mătușă, împreujurul bulevardului cel nou, bulevard ce se va numi al Colței, cînd va duce de la Șosea la Spital. El era în clasa IV-a gimnazială, dar, deși citea pe capete — romane, poezii, știință vulgarizată, — bunăoară pe Jules Verne și pe Flammarion, — rămăsese corigent. Publicase și vreo cîteva versuri într-un ziar cotidian, însă aceasta nu entuziasmase pe respectabila lui mătușă, săsoaică de origină, și rea, rea foc. "Învață, ticălosule! ", îi striga ea de cîte ori îl prindea cu vreuna din acele cărți în mînă. Și i le rupea, i le băga în sobă. În sfîrșit, băiatul se disperase, părăsise domiciliul mătușei și, de mai bine de șase zile, dormea la un prieten care poseda un întreg stoc de cărți de-ale lui Flammarion. Astfel, se împlinea aproape săptămîna de cînd Odorescu zburase în lumi transcendentale. Pentru stele, pentru infinit, renunțase chiar la scrierea în versuri. Ce începuse să-l trudească acum era o altă ambițiune.... Hotărît, tot astronomia n-are reprezentanți extraordinari în România și, așa fiind, de ce nu s-ar deda el la un' asemenea studiu. Și de cînd se apucase să citească pe Flammarion, ce-l turbura mai mult era problema cometelor... A! de ce nu dă Dumnezeu, cel puțin să vadă și el una? Cît ar fi de încîntat! Cum ar observa-o! Cum ar căuta să-i deslușească mersul! Și, — cine știe?... poate... — O! dar aceasta ar fi o glorie prea mare!... poate că se va ajunge într-o zi a se zice: Cometa lui Odorescu, după cum se zice: Cometa lui Biela.

Băiețandrul, fire entuziastă și nobilă, se simțea atunci mai presus de ticăloasele împrejurări ale traiului ce-l înconjura. Ochii i se împleau de o lumină aproape tot așa de aprinsă ca a sîmburilor de comete și beat de bucurie... — gloria! gloria! — nu se gîndea dacă a mîncat sau nu, așa că cezarismul pîntecului său se democratiza pe zi ce trecea. Mătușa sa — odioasa burgheză! — pîndea de mult sosirea acestui moment psihologic și —- o! trădare! — pusă în corent de amicul la care nepotul său dormea, — îi ținu calea într-o seară tocmai pe bulevard, pe largul fluviu de asfalt și granit ce curge de la margini spre inima Bucureștilor și pe care lui îi plăcea să-l străbată în toată lărgimea, să-l măsoare în toată lungimea, cu ochii veșnic țintă pe stele, pe lună, pe cele patru colțuri ale orizonului, doar-doar de s-o ivi cometa mult așteptată, evenimentul ce avea să hotărască despre ce va fi viața lui, — superioară sau... sau... — groază a groazelor și blestem al blestemelor! — sau ce este viața tutulor Icarilor cari cad din ceruri la pămînt:

"...ca aripa zdrobită de-a lumei perfidie

..cu vise, cu-amor, cu poezie..."

Invectivele mătușei curgeau. Vocabularul amenința să nu sfîrșească... "Hai! păcătosule! d-aia mi-am pus eu nădejdea-n tine! Ca să ajungi o haimana?... Da' stai că-ți arăt eu. Acum ți s-a înfundat... 0 să vezi cu cine ai a face... Dacă vrei să numeri petrele, numără-le, dar nu cu hainele pe cari ți le-am cumpărat eu... Și ghetele?... Ale tale sunt, ori tot eu ți le-am luat?..."

Cum și ce fel se făcu, Dumnezeu știe. Destul că în acele momente de grea cumpănă, Odorescu ridică ochii în sus... Așa se întîmplă totdauna cînd ești în primejdie. Ridică ochii în sus, — însă minune a minunilor! văzu, — văzu, — și nu era nălucă, — văzu o cometă, o cometă adevărată, o goșgogea cometă, cu sîmburele roșu de te băga în răcori și cu un fel de coadă, — scurtă e adevărat, dar a cărei scurtime era răscumpărată de faptul că era cilindrică și tricoloră... Această cometă era portocalie, roșie și albastră, și bîțăia.

Oricine ar fi văzut-o nu putea decît să simtă părul zbîrlindu-i-se pe cap... Băiatul abia avu puterea s-o arate mătușei sale și să gîfîie: "Co-me-ta!" Și, în adevăr, era, desigur, o cometă, era cometa ce-i venea în ajutor, cometa ce scăpase de toate ochianele astronomilor din New York, Londra, Paris, Petersburg și Berlin, spre a nu i se destăinui decît lui, spre gloria lui cea mare, iar, la drept vorbind, și spre mîntuirea jachetei lui de ghearele hrăpitoare...

Acele gheare, deși gheare de mătușă, în fața cometei se slăbănogiră, se descleștară și alunecară, cu brațe cu tot, de-a lungul rochiei.

"Cometa! Sfîrșitul lumei! vai de mine și de mine! Hai, Iancule, să ne împăcăm" fură vorbele ce-i zbîrnăirâ deznădăjduit pe buze și, podidită de lacrimi, se aruncă de gîtul nepotului pe care îl înăbuși cu sărutări.

Negreșit că Odorescu, cu toată împăcăciunea, nu pierdu vremea. Din acea seară chiar, dete sfoară în București despre marele eveniment... Nu prea o văzuse nimeni, dacă cumva o văzuse cineva, afară de directorul observatorului meteorologic, care, de cum îi sosise zvonul, nu numai că o văzuse, dar îi și determinase direcțiunea. Ea se mișca de la vest spre nord-vest, înclina spre pămînt, avea o densitate amenințătoare asupra căreia nu se putea înșela cu o iotă și dacă a doua zi seara nu se va arăta, era o dovadă că se apropie de pămînt cu iuțeală. În adevăr, în astronomie, este ceva elementar că atunci cînd cometele sunt destinate să se depărteze, să nu se ciocnească cu pămîntul, rămîn noaptea din ce în ce mai mult pe cer, urcă spre zenit.

În puțină vreme, Bucureștii fură în mișcare. A doua zi seara, lume din lume, — unii cu binocluri, alții cu ochiane, — se grămădise pe bulevard, năvălea spre Șosea, aștepta arătarea rătăcitorului și înfricoșatului astru. Altă parte, cea pînă la care teoria apropierei de pămînt a cometelor ajunsese, era cu totul îngrijată... Unii atribuiau ivirea cometei și sfirșitul lumei detronărei mitropolitului-primat... Păgînii însă, — și cîți nu sunt păgîni în ziua de azi? — nu credeau... pe cînd oborenii puneau cometa în socoteala intrărei în București a împăratului Austriei, — sosire ce, — e și drept a se constata — nu s-a putut întîmpla decît după îndeplinirea unei eclipse de lună...

Oricum ar fi fost, Odorescu, de la o zi la alta, își văzuse visul cu ochii. În București nu se mai vorbea decît despre cometă!... Cometa lui Odorescu!

Cu încetul, totul reintră în liniște. Trecuseră două săptămîni... Gloriile, — chiar cele mai mari — în unele țări sunt efemere. Odorescu scăpase cu succes de corigență... Poate că profesorii, în urma evenimentului, erau și interesați să nu facă altfel.

Pe el însă îl aștepta în curînd o mică decepțiune... Într-o seară — funestă noapte! — se afla la amicul său, la cel cu cărți de-ale lui Flammarion... Cometa apăru... Era ea, nu încăpea nici o îndoială. Mergea de la vest la nord-vest. Înclina vădit spre pămînt. Coada ei, scurtă, dar compensată prin faptul că era groasă și cilindrică, acea faimoasă coadă, roșie, galbenă și albastră, se mișca năbădăios... imita cîteodată legănarea pendulului, altă dată se da peste cap de trei ori... Sîmburele ei era roșu ca para. Odorescu și amicul său n-avură vreme să-și schimbe părerile. Cometa se apropia repede, vîjăia de lua lumea în cap, dar odată cu dînsa, — ce lua înfățișarea unui lampion venețian — se zărea și un patrat sumbru, — colosal zmeu de hîrtie vînătă al unor copii de peste drum ce atîrnaseră de sfoară cometa lui Odorescu.

Fațada ei se întinde pe o lungime de un kilometru și e din marmoră albă, mîngîiată de soarele Aticei. Ea și aduce întrucâtva cu a unor clădiri din India, deși le întrece cu mult, după cum visul și basmul au întrecut întotdauna realitatea. Arcuri nemăsurate de porți îl străpung din o sută în o sută de metri, și, de pe platforma necontenită a scărei lui de cîte cinci trepte, aleargă nesfîrșita colonadă de onix care, singură ea, a costat o sută de milioane. Se agață de ea o lume de plante urcătoare, iar trandafirii, după ce îi cuceresc împreună cu glicinele culmea, se prăvălesc de-a lungul zidurilor tot de marmoră și împrejurul ferestrelor și ușilor încadrate în chenare de lapis-lazuli, agată și jasp-sanguin, spre a se surpa în tumultoase cascade de argint, de aur, de purpură, pe cînd potirele mov ale florilor glicinei cîntă cu o notă melancolică pămînteasca zădărnicie.

Un mic tren subteran, ale cărui stațiuni se deschid în subsoluri, înlesnește serviciul, ce se face astfel cu repeziciune dintr-o parte a palatului în alta.

E de prisos a se vorbi de luxul cam rece dinăuntrul lui, dar asupra unora din falsele ferestre ce se întîlnesc ici-colo în încăperi, se poate stărui cu oarecare luare-aminte. La drept, ele nici nu sunt ferestre, deși au toată înfățișarea lor, ci numai niște pînze cinematografice ce te trec mările și oceanurile spre a te purta cînd în o țară, cînd în alta și a-ți da putința să le vezi pe rînd minunile.

Hăul pe care această sală îl înfățișază este spăimîntător, și se zice că cine s-ar pomeni fără veste în ea ar putea ușor să-și piardă mințile.

În sala bibliotecei — bibliotecă de altminteri închipuită, căci nu se află în ea decît o singură carte, — te așteaptă ironia nemărginitei surprinderi de a citi pe legătura acestui volum așezat pe o masă de aur, titlul de: Cartea Cărților. În fond însă, întocmită precum se poate vedea, ea este din foi ce nu sunt decît titlurile de rentă ale mai tutulor statelor, numele pe care îl poartă pare astfel cu totul legitim.
