What you DON'T know about the verb to BE in Greek

Σήμερα θα μιλήσουμε για το ρήμα είμαι. Today we will talk about the verb am. Hoy vamos a hablar del verbo ser o estar.

Νομίζω ότι όλοι γνωρίζετε το ρήμα είμαι. I think you all know the verb am. Creo que todos conoceréis el verbo ser.

Είναι ένα από τα πιο βασικά ρήματα της ελληνικής γλώσσας. It is one of the most basic verbs in the Greek language. Es uno de los verbos más básicos de la lengua griega.

Είναι ένα ρήμα συνδετικό, It is a linking verb, Es un verbo copulativo,

που σημαίνει ότι συνδέει το υποκείμενο με μία ιδιότητα, which means that it connects the subject with a property, que quiere decir que une el sujeto con un atributo,

μόνιμη ή προσωρινή. permanent or temporary. permanente o temporal.

Είναι επίσης ένα από τα πρώτα ρήματα, It is also one of the first verbs, Es también uno de los primeros verbos

που πρέπει να ξέρει ένας μαθητής των ελληνικών. that a student of Greek must know. que debería conocer un estudiante de griego.

Μας βοηθάει να συστηθούμε. It helps us introduce ourselves. Nos sirve para presentarnos.

Για παράδειγμα: είμαι η Γιούλη For example: I am Yuli Por ejemplo: soy Yiuli.

Να μιλήσουμε για την καταγωγή μας: Let's talk about our origin: Hablar de nuestro origen:

Είμαι από την Ελλάδα. I am from GREECE. Soy de Grecia.

Αλλά και για το επάγγελμά μας: But also for our profession: Y también de nuestra profesión:

Είμαι δασκάλα. I am a teacher. Soy profesora.

Όμως υπάρχουν και κάποιες χρήσεις του ρήματος είμαι, But there are also some uses of the verb am, Pero hay algunos usos del verbo ser/estar

που ίσως να μη γνωρίζετε which you may not know que puede que no conozcáis

και γι'αυτές θα μιλήσουμε σήμερα. and we will talk about them today. y hoy vamos a hablar de ellos.

Αρχικά το χρησιμοποιούμε αντί για το ρήμα φοράω. First we use it instead of the verb wear. Para empezar, lo usamos en lugar del verbo llevar (una prenda).

Για παράδειγμα, είναι καλοκαίρι, είσαι στην παραλία For example, it's summer, you're at the beach Por ejemplo, es verano, estás en la playa

και σε παίρνει τηλέφωνο ένας φίλος σου. and a friend of yours calls you. y te llama un amigo.

Ο φίλος σου έχει κλείσει τραπέζι Your friend has booked a table Tu amigo ha reservado mesa

σε ένα πολύ ακριβό εστιατόριο in a very expensive restaurant en un restaurante muy caro

και σου προτείνει να πας μαζί του. and suggests you go with him. y te invita a ir con él.

Όμως το ντύσιμό σου είναι για παραλία But your outfit is for the beach Pero vas vestido para la playa

και όχι για ένα ακριβό εστιατόριο. and not for an expensive restaurant. y no para un restaurante caro.

Σε αυτή την περίπτωση μπορείς να πεις: In this case you can say: En ese caso puedes decir:

Είμαι ακόμη με το μαγιό, I'm still in my bathing suit Todavía estoy en bañador,

θα σε πείραζε να πάω στο σπίτι να αλλάξω would you mind if i go home and change ¿te importa que vaya a casa a cambiarme

και να έρθω λίγο αργότερα; and come a little later? y venga un poco más tarde?

Γενικότερα όταν χρησιμοποιούμε το ρήμα More generally when we use the verb Por lo general, cuando usamos el verbo

συν την πρόθεση με και ένα ρούχο, plus the intention with a garment, más la preposición con y una prenda,

τότε το ρήμα είμαι, σημαίνει φοράω. then the verb am, means to wear. el verbo estar significa llevar puesto.

Είμαι με το μαγιό, είμαι με τις πιτζάμες ή είμαι με τις παντόφλες. I'm in my swimsuit, I'm in my pajamas or I'm in my slippers. Estoy en bañador, estoy en pijama o estoy en pantuflas.

Όταν χρησιμοποιούμε το είμαι με και μετά ένα όνομα, When we use am with and then a noun, Cuando usamos "estar con" seguido de un nombre,

σημαίνει ότι έχουμε σχέση με αυτό το άτομο. it means we have a relationship with that person. significa que tenemos una relación con esa persona.

Για παράδειγμα εάν κάποιος πει: For example if someone says: Por ejemplo, si alguien dice:

Αυτήν την περίοδο είμαι με τον Γιάννη, I am currently with Giannis, Actualmente estoy con Giannis,

σημαίνει ότι έχουμε σχέση, ότι είμαστε ζευγάρι. means that we are in a relationship, that we are a couple. quiere decir que tenemos una relación, que somos pareja.

Κάποιες φορές το ρήμα είμαι μπορεί να σημαίνει έχω. Sometimes the verb am can mean to have. Algunas veces el verbo estar puede significar tener.

Για παράδειγμα, όταν είμαι με βρεγμένα μαλλιά For example, when I have wet hair Por ejemplo, cuando estoy con el pelo mojado

δε βγαίνω ποτέ έξω. i never go out no salgo nunca.

Με άλλα λόγια όταν έχω με βρεγμένα μαλλιά, In other words when I have wet hair, En otras palabras, cuando tengo el pelo mojado

προτιμώ να μένω μέσα στο σπίτι, I prefer to stay indoors prefiero quedarme en casa,

γιατί εάν βγω έξω μπορεί να κρυώσω. because if I go out I might catch a cold. porque si salgo puedo coger frío.

Τώρα όταν το ρήμα είμαι, ακολουθείται από Now when the verb am is followed by Ahora, cuando el verbo ser va seguido de

μια ποδοσφαιρική ομάδα ή ένα πολιτικό κόμμα, a football team or a political party, un equipo de fútbol o de un partido político

τότε μπορεί να έχει την έννοια του υποστηρίζω. then it can have the meaning of support. entonces puede significar apoyar.

Πολύ συχνά όταν ήμασταν πιο μικροί, Very often when we were younger, Muy a menudo, cuando éramos más pequeños,

οι φίλοι του μπαμπά μου ρωτούσαν τον αδερφό μου, my dad's friends were asking my brother, los amigos de mi padre le preguntaban a mi hermano

τι ομάδα είναι. what a team it is. de qué equipo era.

Δηλαδή ποια ποδοσφαιρική ομάδα υποστηρίζει. Which football team does he support? Es decir, a qué equipo de fútbol apoya.

Εγώ επειδή δεν είχα ιδέα από ομάδες, Me because I had no idea about groups, Como yo no tenía ni idea de equipos,

έλεγα πάντα ότι είμαι Εθνική Ελλάδος. I always said that I am a Greek national. siempre decía que era de la Selección Nacional de Grecia.

Επίσης, κάποιες φορές χρησιμοποιούμε το ρήμα είμαι Also, sometimes we use the verb am Además, a veces se usa el verbo estar

ως υπάρχω ή βρίσκομαι. as I exist or am. como existir o encontrarse.

Όπως στην ερώτηση: Πού είσαι; As in the question: Where are you? Como en la pregunta: ¿dónde estás?

Είμαι στη δουλειά. I'm at work. Estoy en el trabajo.

Είμαι στο σπίτι. I am at home. Estoy en casa.

Είμαι στον δρόμο, έρχομαι. I'm on the way, I'm coming. Estoy en la calle, ya voy.

Τέλος, χρησιμοποιούμε το ρήμα είμαι, για σχέδια Finally, we use the verb am, for plans Por último, usamos el verbo estar para los planes

ή όταν πρόκειται να κάνουμε κάτι. or when we are about to do something. o para cuando vamos a hacer algo.

Για παράδειγμα, ήταν να πάω στην Ελλάδα φέτος, For example, I was going to Greece this year, Por ejemplo, estaba por ir a Grecia este año,

όμως δεν τα κατάφερα. but I didn't succeed. pero no he podido.

Είχα σχεδιάσει ένα ταξίδι στην Ελλάδα, I had planned a trip to Greece, Había planeado un viaje a Grecia,

όμως εξαιτίας της πανδημίας και των νέων συνθηκών, but due to the pandemic and the new conditions, pero por culpa de la pandemia y la nueva situación

δεν κατάφερα να το πραγματοποιήσω. no he podido hacerlo.
