49. Great concern in the huts
49. Wielki niepokój w chatach
49. Grande preocupação nas cabanas
When the others arrived in the evening from the mill to the huts and said that they had lost Fanis, great sorrow fell on the children.
The weaker ones wept.
Spyros and George wanted to go secretly to cry.
The loudest ones pondered what to do.
Andreas hid his agitation and began to ask in detail everything.
Kostakis told him where, when and how.
"First Panos and Mathios around there asked for him, says Kostakis.
Then we all came down from there.
We pondered whether we should go back to the mill or pull towards the lock.
We pulled out at the close, but there was no way out.
We moved on, but we saw that the sun was about to set.
When to go to the mill, when to return?"
"We'll start here at dawn," said Andreas.
"Let's go down fast."
---
-"But we didn't tell you the other thing, Andrea," said Mathius.
—Είναι τίποτ' άλλο;
-Is there anything else?
-Yes, it's something else you don't know.
And in a low and frightened voice he added: "Fanis has gone to the Arabian Sea."
-Which Arabian Nightshade? asked Andreas.
Είναι ο βράχος που μας έλεγε η γριά;
Is that the rock the old lady was telling us about?
-Here near the mill we found an old man with a black cap on his head.
So he looked like a monk, but he wore old and torn clothes.
"Daddy," we say to him, "have you been through the closet?"
"Yes," he told us.
"Have you seen a child?"
"I saw a child in the distance," he said.
«Πού;»
"Where?"
The old man didn't tell us right away.
But he pondered for a while and looked at us.
"Where," he said, "I am afraid to tell you.
Here, in the Arabian Nights I saw it."
"What's the Arapobrachos?" we asked.
"It is the rock of Arapis" he replied "don't ask more.
And he left, making his cross."
Kostakis spoke then:
-Do you remember, Andrea, what the old lady Charmaine told us? She told us that here somewhere near a rock there is a ghost, a nigger; and she took many people.
That's how he told us.
Then they all fell silent.
They got up shortly and went to bed.
But none of them could get a good wink.
Two or three times he went out and looked.
He waited anxiously for the light that brought the dawn over the mountains.
