Forest animals | Finnish listening practice

Heippa hei! Hello!

Tällä videolla mää aion puhua eläimistä, joita voi nähä suomalaisessa metsässä. In this video I'm going to talk about animals that you might see in a Finnish forest.

Idea tähän tuli eräältä kommentoijalta Redditissä. The idea for this came from a commenter in Reddit.

Kiitos hyvästä ideasta! Thanks for a good idea!

Siilit on suloisia pikku piikkipalloja. Hedgehogs are cute little spike-balls.

Niitä näkee parhaiten iltasin, jolloin ne liikkuu etsimässä ruokaa. They are easiest to see in the evenings, when they are moving in search of food.

Mää oon monesti nähny siilin metsänreunassa massuttamassa kastematoa tai jotain muuta herkkua. I have often seen a hedgehog at the edge of a forest, eating away an earthworm or some other delicacy.

Siilit maiskuttaa hauskasti. Hedgehogs smack their lips funnily.

Ennen vanhaan ihmisillä oli tapana laittaa siilejä varten maitokuppi ulos, In the olden days people used to place a bowl of milk outside for hedgehogs,

...mutta siilin maha ei oikeasti siedä maitoa. ...but hedgehog's tummy doesn't actually tolerate milk.

Oravia on helppo nähdä metsässä. Squirrels are easy to see in a forest.

They climb in trees and chase each other along tree trunks.

Oravat tykkää erityisesti kuusen kävyistä, ja niitä onki paljon siellä missä on kuusimetsää. Squirrels especially like spruce cones, and they are plentiful wherever there is spruce forest.

Oravat saattaa kiihdyksissään säksättää ja heiluttaa häntäänsä edestakasin. Squirrels may agitatedly chug and wave their tail back and forth.

Ne myös hautaa maahan ruokaa pahan päivän varalle, They also bury food on the ground for a rainy day,

...but I have a feeling that they never find their caches.

Yks pienimpiä nisäkkäitä Suomessa on päästäinen. One of the smallest mammals in Finland is shrew.

It's a creature which in size and appearance resembles a mouse, but is in fact related to hedgehog.

Päästäisellä on pitkä kuono jolla se nuuhkii ympäristöä. A shrew has a long snout that it uses to sniff its surroundings.

Sen on pakko etsiä koko ajan ruokaa, koska sillä on tosi nopea aineenvaihdunta. It must be constantly looking for food, because it has very fast metabolism.

Shrews are so small that they are really hard to see.

Oon mää silti joskus nähny niitä. Still, I have sometimes seen them.

Metsässä näkee myös paljon lintuja. In a forest one can also see many birds.

Suomen neljä yleisintä lintulajia on peippo, pajulintu, punarinta ja talitiainen eli talitintti. Finland's four most common bird species are chaffinch, willow warbler, robin, and great tit or talitintti.

Alkukesästä linnut laulaa korviahuumaavasti. In early summer birds sing deafeningly.

They are then looking for a mate, and male birds make a row about their territory.

Kesän mittaan lintujen laulu hiljenee. As the summer progresses, birdsong gets quieter.

Talvella niitä ei juuri kuule. In winter you barely hear them.

Monet linnut muuttaa etelään talveksi, ja loput yrittää vaan selvitä hengissä. Many birds migrate to the south for winter, and the rest are simply trying to survive.

Mun lempieläin on ehkä orava. My favourite animal is perhaps squirrel.

Squirrel has such a lovely fluffy tail, and somehow very humane looking hands.
