羅 生 門

ある 日 の 暮方 の 事 である 。 一 人 の 下人 が 、羅生門 の 下 で 雨 やみ を 待って いた 。 ・・

広い 門 の 下 に は 、この 男 の ほか に 誰 も いない 。 ただ 、所々 丹 塗 の 剥げた 、大きな 円柱 に 、蟋蟀 が 一匹 と まっている 。 羅 生 門 が 、朱雀 大路 に ある 以上 は 、この 男 の ほか に も 、雨やみ を する 市 女 笠 や 揉 烏帽子 が 、もう 二三 人 は あり そうな もの である 。 それ が 、この 男 の ほか に は 誰 も いない 。 ・・

何故 か と 云う と 、この 二三年 、京都 に は 、地震 と か 辻風 と か 火事 と か 饑饉 と か 云う 災 が つづいて 起った 。 そこ で 洛中 の さびれ 方 は 一通り で は ない 。 旧 記 に よる と 、仏像 や 仏具 を 打砕いて 、その 丹 が ついたり 、金銀 の 箔 が ついたり した 木 を 、路ばた に つみ重ねて 、薪 の 料 に 売っていた と 云う 事 である 。 洛中 が その 始末 である から 、羅生門 の 修理 など は 、元 より 誰 も 捨てて 顧る 者 が なかった 。 する と その 荒れ果てた の を よい 事 に して 、狐 狸 が 棲む 。 盗人 が 棲む 。 とうとう しまい に は 、引取り手 の ない 死人 を 、この 門 へ 持って 来て 、棄てて 行く と 云う 習慣 さえ 出来た 。 そこ で 、 日 の 目 が 見え なく なる と 、 誰 でも 気味 を 悪 る がって 、 この 門 の 近所 へ は 足ぶみ を しない 事 に なって しまった のである 。 ・・

その 代り また 鴉 が どこ から か 、たくさん 集って 来た 。 昼間 見る と 、その 鴉 が 何 羽 と なく 輪 を 描いて 、高い 鴟尾 の まわり を 啼き ながら 、飛びまわって いる 。 ことに 門 の 上 の 空 が 、夕焼け で あかく なる 時 に は 、それ が 胡麻 を まいた ように はっきり 見えた 。 鴉 は 、勿論 、門 の 上 に ある 死人 の 肉 を 、啄み に 来る のである 。 ――もっとも 今日 は 、刻限 が 遅い せい か 、一羽 も 見えない 。 ただ 、所々 、崩れかかった 、そうして その 崩れ 目 に 長い 草 の はえた 石段 の 上 に 、鴉 の 糞 が 、点々 と 白く こびりついている のが 見える 。 下 人 は 七 段 ある 石段 の 一番 上 の 段 に 、洗いざらし た 紺 の 襖 の 尻 を 据えて 、右 の 頬 に 出来た 、大きな 面皰 を 気に しながら 、ぼんやり 、雨 の ふる のを 眺めていた 。 ・・

作者 は さっき 、「下人 が 雨 やみ を 待って いた 」と 書いた 。 しかし 、下人 は 雨 が やんで も 、格別 どう しよう と 云う 当て は ない 。 ふだん なら 、勿論 、主人 の 家 へ 帰る 可 き 筈 である 。 所 が その 主人 から は 、四五 日 前 に 暇 を 出さ れた 。 前 に も 書いた ように 、当時 京都 の 町 は 一通り ならず 衰微 していた 。 今 この 下 人 が 、永年 、使われて いた 主人 から 、暇 を 出さ れた の も 、実は この 衰微 の 小さな 余波 に ほかならない 。 だ から 「下人 が 雨 やみ を 待って いた 」と 云う より も 「雨 に ふりこめられた 下人 が 、行き所 が なくて 、途方 に くれていた 」と 云う 方が 、適当である 。 その 上 、今日 の 空模様 も 少からず 、この 平安朝 の 下人 の Sentimentalisme に 影響 した 。 申 の 刻 下り から ふり出した 雨 は 、いまだに 上る けしき が ない 。 そこ で 、下人 は 、何 を おいても 差当り 明日 の 暮し を どうにか しよう と して ――云わば どうにも ならない 事 を 、どうにか しよう として 、とりとめもない 考え を たどり ながら 、さっき から 朱雀 大路 に ふる 雨 の 音 を 、聞く とも なく 聞いていた のである 。 ・・

雨 は 、羅生門 を つつんで 、遠く から 、ざあっと 云う 音 を あつめて 来る 。 夕闇 は 次第に 空 を 低く して 、見上げる と 、門 の 屋根 が 、斜 に つき出した 甍 の 先 に 、重たく うす暗い 雲 を 支えて いる 。 ・・

どうにも なら ない 事 を 、どうにか する ために は 、手段 を 選んでいる 遑 は ない 。 選んで いれば 、築土 の 下 か 、道ばた の 土 の 上 で 、饑死 を する ばかりである 。 そうして 、この 門 の 上 へ 持って 来て 、犬 の ように 棄てられて しまう ばかりである 。 選ば ない と すれば ――下人 の 考え は 、何度 も 同じ 道 を 低徊 した 揚句 に 、やっと この 局所 へ 逢着した 。 しかし この 「すれば 」は 、いつまで たって も 、結局 「すれば 」であった 。 下人 は 、 手段 を 選ばない と いう 事 を 肯定 し ながら も 、 この 「 すれば 」 の かた を つける ため に 、 当然 、 その後 に 来る 可 き 「 盗人 に なる より ほか に 仕方 が ない 」 と 云 う 事 を 、 積極 的に 肯定 する だけ の 、 勇気 が 出 ず に いた のである 。 ・・

下 人 は 、大きな 嚔 を して 、それ から 、大 儀 そうに 立上った 。 夕 冷え の する 京都 は 、もう 火 桶 が 欲しい ほど の 寒さ である 。 風 は 門 の 柱 と 柱 との 間 を 、夕闇 と 共に 遠慮なく 、吹きぬける 。 丹 塗 の 柱 に とまって いた 蟋蟀 も 、もう どこ か へ 行って しまった 。 ・・

下 人 は 、頸 を ちぢめ ながら 、山吹 の 汗袗 に 重ねた 、紺 の 襖 の 肩 を 高く して 門 の まわり を 見まわした 。 雨 風 の 患 の ない 、人目 に かかる 惧 の ない 、一晩 楽に ねられ そうな 所 が あれば 、そこ で ともかくも 、夜 を 明かそう と 思った から である 。 する と 、幸い 門 の 上 の 楼 へ 上る 、幅 の 広い 、これ も 丹 を 塗った 梯子 が 眼 に ついた 。 上 なら 、人 が いた にしても 、どうせ 死人 ばかり である 。 下 人 は そこ で 、腰 に さげた 聖 柄 の 太刀 が 鞘 走ら ない ように 気 を つけ ながら 、藁 草履 を はいた 足 を 、その 梯子 の 一番 下 の 段 へ ふみ かけた 。 ・・

それ から 、何分 か の 後 である 。 羅 生 門 の 楼 の 上 へ 出る 、幅 の 広い 梯子 の 中段 に 、一人 の 男 が 、猫 の ように 身 を ちぢめて 、息 を 殺し ながら 、上 の 容子 を 窺って いた 。 楼 の 上 から さす 火 の 光 が 、かすかに 、その 男 の 右 の 頬 を ぬらしている 。 短い 鬚 の 中 に 、赤く 膿 を 持った 面皰 の ある 頬 である 。 下 人 は 、始め から 、この 上 に いる 者 は 、死人 ばかり だ と 高 を 括って いた 。 それ が 、梯子 を 二三 段 上って 見る と 、上 で は 誰 か 火 を とぼし て 、しかも その 火 を そこ ここ と 動かしている らしい 。 これ は 、その 濁った 、黄いろい 光 が 、隅々 に 蜘蛛の巣 を かけた 天井裏 に 、揺れながら 映った ので 、すぐに それ と 知れた のである 。 この 雨 の 夜 に 、この 羅生門 の 上 で 、火 を ともしている から は 、どうせ ただの 者 で は ない 。 ・・

下 人 は 、守宮 の ように 足音 を ぬすんで 、やっと 急な 梯子 を 、一 番 上 の 段 まで 這う ように して 上りつめた 。 そうして 体 を 出来る だけ 、平に し ながら 、頸 を 出来る だけ 、前 へ 出して 、恐る恐る 、楼 の 内 を 覗いて 見た 。 ・・

見る と 、楼 の 内 に は 、噂 に 聞いた 通り 、幾つか の 死骸 が 、無造作に 棄ててある が 、火 の 光 の 及ぶ 範囲 が 、思った より 狭い ので 、数 は 幾つ とも わからない 。 ただ 、おぼろげ ながら 、知れる の は 、その 中 に 裸 の 死骸 と 、着物 を 着た 死骸 と が ある と いう 事 である 。 勿論 、中 に は 女 も 男 も まじって いる らしい 。 そうして 、その 死骸 は 皆 、それ が 、かつて 、生きて いた 人間 だ と 云う 事実 さえ 疑わ れる ほど 、土 を 捏ねて 造った 人形 の ように 、口 を 開いたり 手 を 延ばしたり して 、ごろごろ 床 の 上に ころがって いた 。 しかも 、肩 とか 胸 とか の 高く なっている 部分 に 、ぼんやりした 火 の 光 を うけて 、低く なっている 部分 の 影 を 一層 暗く しながら 、永久 に 唖 の 如く 黙って いた 。 ・・

下 人 は 、それら の 死骸 の 腐爛した 臭気 に 思わず 、鼻 を 掩った 。 しかし 、その 手 は 、次の 瞬間 に は 、もう 鼻 を 掩う 事 を 忘れて いた 。 ある 強い 感情 が 、ほとんど ことごとく この 男 の 嗅覚 を 奪って しまった から だ 。 ・・

下 人 の 眼 は 、その 時 、はじめて その 死骸 の 中 に 蹲っている 人間 を 見た 。 檜 皮 色 の 着物 を 着た 、背 の 低い 、痩せた 、白髪 頭 の 、猿 の ような 老婆 である 。 その 老婆 は 、右 の 手 に 火 を ともした 松 の 木片 を 持って 、その 死骸 の 一 つ の 顔 を 覗きこむ ように 眺めて いた 。 髪 の 毛 の 長い 所 を 見る と 、多分 女 の 死骸 であろう 。 ・・

下 人 は 、六 分 の 恐怖 と 四 分 の 好奇心 と に 動かされて 、暫時 は 呼吸 を する の さえ 忘れて いた 。 旧 記 の 記者 の 語 を 借りれば 、「頭 身 の 毛 も 太る 」ように 感じた のである 。 する と 老婆 は 、松 の 木片 を 、床板 の 間 に 挿して 、それから 、今まで 眺めていた 死骸 の 首 に 両手 を かける と 、丁度 、猿 の 親 が 猿 の 子 の 虱 を とる ように 、その 長い 髪 の 毛 を 一本ずつ 抜き はじめた 。 髪 は 手 に 従って 抜ける らしい 。 ・・

その 髪 の 毛 が 、一 本 ずつ 抜ける の に 従って 、下人 の 心 から は 、恐怖 が 少しずつ 消えて 行った 。 そうして 、それ と 同時に 、この 老婆 に 対する はげしい 憎悪 が 、少しずつ 動いて 来た 。 ――いや 、この 老婆 に 対する と 云って は 、語弊 が ある かも 知れない 。 むしろ 、あらゆる 悪 に 対する 反感 が 、一分 毎 に 強さ を 増して 来た のである 。 この 時 、誰 か が この 下人 に 、さっき 門 の 下 で この 男 が 考えていた 、饑死 を する か 盗人 に なる か と 云う 問題 を 、改めて 持出したら 、恐らく 下人 は 、何の 未練 も なく 、饑死 を 選んだ 事 であろう 。 それほど 、この 男 の 悪 を 憎む 心 は 、老婆 の 床 に 挿した 松 の 木片 の ように 、勢い よく 燃え上り出していた のである 。 ・・

下 人 に は 、勿論 、何故 老婆 が 死人 の 髪 の 毛 を 抜く か わから なかった 。 従って 、合理的に は 、それ を 善悪 の いずれ に 片づけて よい か 知らなかった 。 しかし 下 人 に とって は 、この 雨 の 夜 に 、この 羅生門 の 上 で 、死人 の 髪 の 毛 を 抜く と云う 事 が 、それ だけ で 既に 許す べからざる 悪 であった 。 勿論 、下人 は 、さっき まで 自分 が 、盗人 に なる 気 で いた 事 なぞ は 、とうに 忘れて いた のである 。 ・・

そこ で 、下人 は 、両足 に 力 を 入れて 、いきなり 、梯子 から 上 へ 飛び上った 。 そうして 聖 柄 の 太刀 に 手 を かけ ながら 、大股 に 老婆 の 前 へ 歩みよった 。 老婆 が 驚いた の は 云う までもない 。 ・・

老婆 は 、一目 下人 を 見る と 、まるで 弩 に でも 弾かれた ように 、飛び上った 。 ・・

「おのれ 、どこ へ 行く 。」 ・・

下 人 は 、老婆 が 死骸 に つまずき ながら 、慌てふためいて 逃げよう と する 行手 を 塞いで 、こう 罵った 。 老婆 は 、それ でも 下人 を つきのけて 行こう と する 。 下 人 は また 、それ を 行か すまい と して 、押しもどす 。 二人 は 死骸 の 中 で 、しばらく 、無言 の まま 、つかみ 合った 。 しかし 勝敗 は 、はじめ から わかって いる 。 下人 は とうとう 、 老婆 の 腕 を つかんで 、 無理に そこ へ (※(「 てへん ＋ 丑 」、 第 4 水準 2-12-93) 扭 じ 倒した 。 丁度 、鶏 の 脚 の ような 、骨 と 皮 ばかり の 腕 である 。 ・・

「何 を して いた 。 云 え 。 云 わ ぬ と 、これ だ ぞ よ 。」 ・・

下 人 は 、老婆 を つき放す と 、いきなり 、太刀 の 鞘 を 払って 、白い 鋼 の 色 を その 眼 の 前 へ つきつけた 。 けれども 、老婆 は 黙って いる 。 両手 を わなわな ふるわせて 、 肩 で 息 を 切り ながら 、 眼 を 、 眼球 が ※(「 目 ＋ 匡 」、 第 3 水準 1-88-81) 眶 の 外 へ 出 そうに なる ほど 、 見開いて 、 唖 の よう に 執拗 く 黙って いる 。 これ を 見る と 、下人 は 始めて 明白に この 老婆 の 生死 が 、全然 、自分 の 意志 に 支配 されている と 云う 事 を 意識 した 。 そうして この 意識 は 、今まで けわしく 燃えて いた 憎悪 の 心 を 、いつの間にか 冷まして しまった 。 後 に 残った の は 、ただ 、ある 仕事 を して 、それ が 円満に 成就した 時の 、安らかな 得意 と 満足 と が ある ばかりである 。 そこ で 、下人 は 、老婆 を 見下し ながら 、少し 声 を 柔らげて こう 云った 。 ・・

「己 は 検非違使 の 庁 の 役人 など で は ない 。 今し方 この 門 の 下 を 通りかかった 旅 の者 だ 。 だ から お前 に 縄 を かけて 、どう しよう と 云う ような 事 は ない 。 ただ 、今 時分 この 門 の 上 で 、何 を して 居た のだ か 、それ を 己 に 話し さえ すれば いい のだ 。」 ・・

する と 、老婆 は 、見開いて いた 眼 を 、一層 大きく して 、じっと その 下人 の 顔 を 見守った 。 ※(「 目 ＋ 匡 」、 第 3 水準 1-88-81) 眶 の 赤く なった 、 肉食 鳥 の ような 、 鋭い 眼 で 見た のである 。 それ から 、皺 で 、ほとんど 、鼻 と 一つ に なった 唇 を 、何か 物 でも 噛んで いる ように 動かした 。 細い 喉 で 、尖った 喉仏 の 動いている の が 見える 。 その 時 、その 喉 から 、鴉 の 啼く ような 声 が 、喘ぎ喘ぎ 、下人 の 耳 へ 伝わって 来た 。 ・・

「この 髪 を 抜いて な 、この 髪 を 抜いて な 、鬘 に しよう と 思う た のじゃ 。」 ・・

下 人 は 、老婆 の 答 が 存外 、平凡な のに 失望 した 。 そうして 失望 する と 同時に 、また 前の 憎悪 が 、冷やかな 侮蔑 と 一しょに 、心 の 中 へ は いって 来た 。 する と 、その 気色 が 、先方 へ も 通じた のであろう 。 老婆 は 、片手 に 、まだ 死骸 の 頭 から 奪った 長い 抜け毛 を 持った なり 、蟇 の つぶやく ような 声 で 、口ごもり ながら 、こんな 事 を 云った 。 ・・

「成程 な 、死人 の 髪 の 毛 を 抜く と 云う 事 は 、何 ぼう 悪い 事 かも 知れぬ 。 じゃ が 、ここ に いる 死人 ども は 、皆 、その くらい な 事 を 、されて も いい 人間 ばかり だ ぞ よ 。 現在 、わし が 今 、髪 を 抜いた 女 など は な 、蛇 を 四寸 ばかり ずつ に 切って 干した のを 、干魚 だ と 云うて 、太刀帯 の 陣 へ 売り に 往んだ わ 。 疫病 に かかって 死な なんだら 、今 で も 売り に 往んで いた 事 で あろ 。 それ も よ 、この 女 の 売る 干魚 は 、味 が よい と 云うて 、太刀帯 ども が 、欠かさず 菜料 に 買って いた そうな 。 わし は 、この 女 の した 事 が 悪い と は 思う ていぬ 。 せ ねば 、饑死 を する のじゃ て 、仕方 が なくした 事 で あろ 。 されば 、今 また 、わし の していた 事 も 悪い 事 と は 思わぬ ぞ よ 。 これ とても や はりせ ねば 、饑死 を する じゃ て 、仕方がなく する 事 じゃ わい の 。 じゃ て 、その 仕方 が ない 事 を 、よく 知っていた この 女 は 、大方 わし の する 事 も 大目 に 見てくれる であろ 。」 ・・

老婆 は 、大体 こんな 意味 の 事 を 云った 。 ・・

下 人 は 、太刀 を 鞘 に おさめて 、その 太刀 の 柄 を 左 の 手 で おさえ ながら 、冷然 として 、この 話 を 聞いて いた 。 勿論 、右 の 手 で は 、赤く 頬 に 膿 を 持った 大きな 面皰 を 気に しながら 、聞いている のである 。 しかし 、これ を 聞いて いる 中 に 、下人 の 心 に は 、ある 勇気 が 生まれて 来た 。 それ は 、さっき 門 の 下 で 、この 男 に は 欠けていた 勇気 である 。 そうして 、また さっき この 門 の 上 へ 上って 、この 老婆 を 捕えた 時 の 勇気 と は 、全然 、反対な 方向 に 動こう と する 勇気 である 。 下 人 は 、饑死 を する か 盗人 に なる か に 、迷わ なかった ばかり で はない 。 その 時 の この 男 の 心もち から 云えば 、饑死 など と 云う 事 は 、ほとんど 、考える 事 さえ 出来ない ほど 、意識 の 外 に 追い出されて いた 。 ・・

「きっと 、そう か 。」 ・・

老婆 の 話 が 完る と 、下人 は 嘲る ような 声 で 念 を 押した 。 そうして 、一足前 へ 出る と 、不意に 右 の 手 を 面皰 から 離して 、老婆 の 襟上 を つかみ ながら 、噛みつく ように こう 云った 。 ・・

「では 、己 が 引剥 を しよう と 恨む まい な 。 己 も そう しなければ 、饑死 を する 体 な のだ 。」 ・・

下 人 は 、すばやく 、老婆 の 着物 を 剥ぎとった 。 それ から 、足 に しがみつこう と する 老婆 を 、手荒く 死骸 の 上 へ 蹴 倒した 。 梯子 の 口 まで は 、僅に 五 歩 を 数える ばかりである 。 下 人 は 、剥ぎとった 檜 皮 色 の 着物 を わき に かかえて 、またたく間に 急な 梯子 を 夜 の 底 へ かけ 下りた 。 ・・

しばらく 、死んだ ように 倒れて いた 老婆 が 、死骸 の 中 から 、その 裸 の 体 を 起した のは 、それ から 間もなく の 事 である 。 老婆 は つぶやく ような 、うめく ような 声 を 立て ながら 、まだ 燃えている 火 の 光 を たよりに 、梯子 の 口 まで 、這って 行った 。 そうして 、そこ から 、短い 白髪 を 倒 に して 、門 の 下 を 覗きこんだ 。 外 に は 、ただ 、黒 洞々たる 夜 が ある ばかりである 。 ・・

下 人 の 行方 は 、誰 も 知ら ない 。 ・・
