その 頃 私 は 、北 越 地方 の Ｋという温泉に滞留していた。 九月 も 末 に 近く 、彼岸 を 過ぎた 山 の 中 で は 、もう すっかり 秋 の 季節 に なっていた 。 都会 から 来た 避暑客 は 、既に 皆 帰って しまって 、後 に は 少し ばかり の 湯治客 が 、静かに 病 を 養って いる のであった 。 秋 の 日影 は 次第に 深く 、旅館 の 侘しい 中庭 に は 、木々 の 落葉 が 散らばっていた 。 私 は フランネル の 着物 を 着て 、 ひと り で 裏山 など を 散歩 し ながら 、 所在 のない 日々 の 日課 を すごして いた 。

私 の いる 温泉 地 から 、少し ばかり 離れた 所 に 、三つ の 小さな 町 が あった 、いずれも 町 という より は 、村 という ほど の 小さな 部落 であった けれども 、その 中 の 一つ は 相当に 小ぢんまり した 田舎町 で 、一通り の 日常品 も 売っている し 、都会風 の 飲食店 など も 少し は あった 。 温泉 地 から それ ら の 町 へ は 、いずれも 直通 の 道路 が あって 、毎日 定期 の 乗合馬車 が 往復 していた 。 特に その 繁華 な Ｕ 町 へ は 、小さな 軽便 鉄道 が 布設 されて いた 。 私 は しばしば その 鉄道 で 、町 へ 出かけて 行って 買物 を したり 、時に は また 、女 の いる 店 で 酒 を 飲んだり した 。 だが 私 の 実 の 楽しみ は 、軽便 鉄道 に 乗る こと の 途中 に あった 。 その 玩具 の ような 可愛い 汽車 は 、落葉樹 の 林 や 、谷間 の 見える 山峡 や を 、うねうね と 曲りながら 走って 行った 。

或る 日 私 は 、軽便 鉄道 を 途中 で 下車 し 、徒歩 で Ｕ 町 の 方 へ 歩いて 行った 。 それ は 見晴し の 好い 峠 の 山道 を 、ひとり で ゆっくり 歩き たかった から であった 。 道 は 軌道 （レール ）に 沿い ながら 、林 の 中 の 不規則な 小径 を 通った 。 所々 に 秋草 の 花 が 咲き 、赫土 の 肌 が 光り 、伐られた 樹木 が 横たわって いた 。 私 は 空 に 浮んだ 雲 を 見 ながら 、この 地方 の 山中 に 伝説 して いる 、古い 口碑 の こと を 考えて いた 。 概して 文化 の 程度 が 低く 、原始 民族 の タブー と 迷信 に 包まれている この 地方 に は 、実際 色々な 伝説 や 口碑 が あり 、今 でも なお 多数 の 人々 は 、真面目に 信じている のである 、現に 私 の 宿 の 女中 や 、近所 の 村 から 湯治 に 来ている 人たち は 、一種 の 恐怖 と 嫌悪 の 感情 と で 、私 に 様々の こと を 話してくれた 。 彼ら の 語る ところ に よれば 、或る 部落 の 住民 は 犬神 に 憑かれて おり 、或る 部落 の 住民 は 猫神 に 憑かれて いる 。 犬 神 に 憑かれた もの は 肉 ばかり を 食い 、猫 神 に 憑かれた もの は 魚 ばかり 食って 生活している 。

そうした 特異な 部落 を 称して 、この 辺 の 人々 は 「憑き 村 」と 呼び 、一切 の 交際 を 避けて 忌み 嫌った 。 「憑き 村 」の 人々 は 、年 に 一度 、月 のない 闇夜 を 選んで 祭礼 を する 。 その 祭 の 様子 は 、彼ら 以外 の 普通の 人 に は 全く 見え ない 。 稀 れ に 見て 来た人 が あって も 、 なぜ か 口 を つぐんで 話 を しない 。 彼ら は 特殊の 魔力 を 有し 、所 因 の 解らぬ 莫大 の 財産 を 隠している 。 等 々 。

こうした 思惟 に 耽り ながら 、私 は ひとり 秋 の 山道 を 歩いて いた 。 その 細い 山道 は 、経路 に 沿う て 林 の 奥 へ 消えて 行った 。 目的地 へ の 道標 と して 、私 が 唯一 の たより に していた 汽車 の 軌道 （レール ）は 、もはや 何所 に も 見えなく なった 。 私 は 道 を なくした のだ 。

「迷い 子 ！ 瞑想 から 醒めた 時 に 、私 の 心 に 浮んだ のは 、この 心細い 言葉 であった 。 私 は 急に 不安に なり 、道 を 探そう と して あわて 出した 。 私 は 後 へ 引返して 、逆に 最初の 道 へ 戻ろう と した 。 そして 一層 地理 を 失い 、多岐に 別れた 迷路 の 中 へ 、ぬきさし ならず 入って しまった 。 山 は 次第に 深く なり 、小径 は 荊棘 の 中 に 消えて しまった 。 空しい 時間 が 経過 して 行き 、一人 の 樵夫 に も 逢わ なかった 。 私 は だんだん 不安 に なり 、犬 の ように 焦燥 し ながら 、道 を 嗅ぎ 出そう と して 歩き 廻った 。 そして 最後に 、漸く 人 馬 の 足跡 の はっきり ついた 、一つ の 細い 山道 を 発見した 。 私 は その 足跡 に 注意 し ながら 、次第に 麓 の 方 へ 下って 行った 。 どっち の 麓 に 降りよう と も 、人家 の ある 所 へ 着き さえ すれば 、とにかく 安心 が できる のである 。
