「一 」野分 夏目漱石

八 年 前 大学 を 卒業 して から 田舎 の 中学 を 二三 箇所 流して 歩いた 末 、去年 の 春 飄然 と 東京 へ 戻って 来た 。

流す と は 門附 に 用いる 言葉 で 飄然 と は 徂徠 に 拘わら ぬ 意味 と も 取れる 。

道也 の 進退 を かく 形容 する の 適否 は 作者 と いえ ども 受合わ ぬ 。

縺れ たる 糸 の 片端 も 眼 を 着すれば ただ 一筋 の 末 と あらわるる に 過ぎぬ 。

ただ 一筋 の 出 処 の 裏 に は 十重二十重 の 因縁 が 絡んで いる かも 知れ ぬ 。

鴻 雁 の 北 に 去りて 乙鳥 の 南 に 来る さえ 、鳥 の 身 に なって は 相当 の 弁解 が ある はずじゃ 。

始めて 赴任 した の は 越後 の どこ か であった 。

越後 は 石油 の 名所 である 。

学校 の 在る 町 を 四五 町 隔てて 大きな 石油 会社 が あった 。

学校 の ある 町 の 繁栄 は 三 分 二 以上 この 会社 の 御蔭 で 維持 されている 。 町 の もの に 取って は 幾 個 の 中学校 より も この 石油 会社 の 方 が 遥かに ありがたい 。

会社 の 役員 は 金 の ある 点 に おいて 紳士 である 。

中学 の 教師 は 貧乏な ところ が 下等に 見える 。

この 下等な 教師 と 金 の ある 紳士 が 衝突 すれば 勝敗 は 誰 が 眼 に も 明か である 。

道也 は ある 時 の 演説会 で 、金力 と 品性 と 云う 題目 の もと に 、両者 の 必ずしも 一致 せざる 理由 を 説明して 、暗に 会社 の 役員 ら の 暴慢 と 、青年 子弟 の 何ら の 定見 も なくして いたずらに 黄白 万能主義 を 信奉する の 弊 と を 戒めた 。

役員 ら は 生意気 な 奴 だ と 云った 。 町 の 新聞 は 無能 の 教師 が 高慢な 不平 を 吐く と 評した 。

彼 の 同僚 すら 余計な 事 を して 学校 の 位地 を 危うく する のは 愚 だ と 思った 。

校長 は 町 と 会社 との 関係 を 説いて 、漫 に 平地 に 風波 を 起す の は 得策 で ない と 説諭した 。

道也 の 最後 に 望 を 属して いた 生徒 すら も 、父兄 の 意見 を 聞いて 、身のほど を 知ら ぬ 馬鹿 教師 と 云い出した 。

道也 は 飄然 と して 越後 を 去った 。

次に 渡った の は 九州 である 。

九州 を 中断 して その 北部 から 工業 を 除けば 九州 は 白紙 と なる 。

炭 礦 の 煙り を 浴びて 、黒い 呼吸 を せぬ 者 は 人間 の 資格 は ない 。

垢 光り の する 背広 の 上 へ 蒼い 顔 を 出して 、世の中 が こう の 、社会 が ああ の 、未来 の 国民 が なんの かの と 白銅 一個 に さえ 換算 の 出来ぬ 不生産的な 言説 を 弄する もの に 存在 の 権利 の あろう はず が ない 。

権利 の ない もの に 存在 を 許す の は 実業家 の 御慈悲 である 。

無駄 口 を 叩く 学者 や 、蓄音機 の 代理 を する 教師 が 露 命 を つなぐ 月々 幾 片 の 紙幣 は 、どこ から 湧いて くる 。

手 の 掌 を ぽん と 叩けば 、自から 降る 幾 億 の 富 の 、塵 の 塵 の 末 を 舐め さして 、生かして 置く のが 学者 である 、文士 である 、さては 教師 である 。

金 の 力 で 活きて おり ながら 、金 を 誹る の は 、生んで 貰った 親 に 悪体 を つく と 同じ 事 である 。

その 金 を 作って くれる 実業家 を 軽んずる なら 食わずに 死んで 見る が いい 。

死ねる か 、 死に 切れ ず に 降参 を する か 、 試 めして 見よう と 云って 抛 り 出された 時 、 道也 は また 飄然 と 九州 を 去った 。 第 三 に 出現 した の は 中国 辺 の 田舎 である 。

ここ の 気風 は さほど に 猛烈な 現金 主義 で は なかった 。

ただ 土着 の もの が むやみに 幅 を 利かして 、他県 の もの を 外国人 と 呼ぶ 。

外国人 と 呼ぶ だけ なら それ まで である が 、いろいろに 手 を 廻わして この 外国人 を 征服 しよう と する 。

宴会 が あれば 宴会 で ひやかす 。

演説 が あれば 演説 で あてこ する 。

それ から 新聞 で 厭味 を 並べる 。

生徒 に からかわ せる 。

そうして それ が 何の ため で も ない 。

ただ 他県 の もの が 自分 と 同化 せぬ の が 気 に 懸る から である 。

同化 は 社会 の 要素 に 違 ない 。

仏蘭西 （ フランス ） の タルド と 云 う 学者 は 社会 は 模倣 なり と さえ 云 うた くらい だ 。

同化 は 大切 かも 知れ ぬ 。

その 大切 さ 加減 は 道也 と いえ ども 心得て いる 。

心得て いる どころ で は ない 、高等な 教育 を 受けて 、広義 な 社会観 を 有して いる 彼 は 、凡俗 以上 に 同化 の 功徳 を 認めて いる 。

ただ 高い もの に 同化する か 低い もの に 同化する か が 問題 である 。

この 問題 を 解釈 し ないで いたずらに 同化 する の は 世 の ため に ならぬ 。

自分 から 云えば 一分 が 立たぬ 。

ある 時 旧 藩主 が 学校 を 参観 に 来た 。

旧 藩主 は 殿様 で 華族 様 である 。

所 の もの から 云えば 神様 である 。

この 神様 が 道也 の 教室 へ 這 入って 来た 時 、道也 は 別に 意 に も 留めず 授業 を 継続 していた 。

神様 の 方 で は 無論 挨拶 も し なかった 。

これ から 事 が 六 ず かしく なった 。

教場 は 神聖 である 。

教師 が 教壇 に 立って 業 を 授ける の は 侍 が 物 の 具 に 身 を 固めて 戦場 に 臨む ような もの である 。

いくら 華族 でも 旧 藩主 でも 、授業 を 中絶 させる 権利 は ない と は 道也 の 主張 であった 。

この 主張 の ため に 道也 は また 飄然 と して 任地 を 去った 。

去る 時 に 土地 の もの は 彼 を 目して 頑愚 だ と 評し 合う たそう である 。

頑愚 と 云われたる 道也 は この 嘲罵 を 背に 受け ながら 飄然 として 去った 。

三 たび 飄然 と 中学 を 去った 道也 は 飄然 と 東京 へ 戻った なり 再び 動く 景色 が ない 。

東京 は 日本 で 一 番 世 地 辛い 所 である 。

田舎 に いる ほど の 俸給 を 受けて さえ 楽に は 暮せ ない 。

まして 教職 を 抛って 両手 を 袂 へ 入れた まま で 遣 り 切る の は 、 立ち ながら みいら と なる 工夫 と 評する より ほか に 賞 め よう のない 方法 である 。

道也 に は 妻 が ある 。

妻 と 名 が つく 以上 は 養う べき 義務 は 附随 して くる 。

自から みいら と なる の を 甘んじて も 妻 を 干 乾 に する 訳 に は 行か ぬ 。

干 乾 に ならぬ よ ほど 前 から 妻君 は すでに 不平 である 。

始めて 越後 を 去る 時 に は 妻君 に 一部始終 を 話した 。

その 時 妻君 は ご もっともで ござんす と 云って 、甲斐甲斐しく 荷物 の 手拵 を 始めた 。 九州 を 去る 時 に も その 顛末 を 云って 聞かせた 。 今度 は また です か と 云った ぎり 何にも 口 を 開か なかった 。 中国 を 出る 時 の 妻君 の 言葉 は 、 あなた の よう に 頑固で は どこ へ いら しって も 落ちつけっこ ありません わ と 云 う 訓 戒的 の 挨拶 に 変化 して いた 。 七 年 の 間 に 三 たび 漂泊 して 、三 たび 漂泊 する うち に 妻君 は しだい と 自分 の 傍 を 遠退く ように なった 。

妻君 が 自分 の 傍 を 遠退く の は 漂泊 の ため であろう か 、俸禄 を 棄てる ため であろう か 。

何度 漂泊 して も 、漂泊 する たび に 月給 が 上がったら どう だろう 。

妻君 は 依然と して 「 あなた の よう に ……」 と 不服 が まし い 言葉 を 洩らしたろう か 。

博士 に でも なって 、大学 教授 に 転任 して も やはり 「あなた の ように ……」が 繰り返さ れ る であろう か 。

妻君 の 了簡 は 聞いて 見 なければ 分 ら ぬ 。

博士 に なり 、教授 に なり 、空しき 名 を 空しく 世間 に 謳わ る る が ため 、その 反響 が 妻君 の 胸 に 轟いて 、急に 夫 の 待遇 を 変える ならば この 細君 は 夫 の 知己 と は 云えぬ 。

世の中 が 夫 を 遇 する 朝夕 の 模様 で 、夫 の 価値 を 朝夕 に 変える 細君 は 、夫 を 評価 する 上 に おいて 、世間並 の 一人 である 。

嫁 が ぬ 前 、名 を 知ら ぬ 前 、の 己れ と 異なる ところ が ない 。

従って 夫 から 見れば あか の 他人 である 。

夫 を 知る 点 に おいて 嫁ぐ 前 と 嫁ぐ 後 と に 変り が なければ 、少なくとも この 点 に おいて 細 君 らしい ところ が ない のである 。

世界 は この 細 君 らしから ぬ 細 君 を もって 充満 して いる 。

道也 は 自分 の 妻 を やはり この 同類 と 心得て いる だろう か 。

至る所 に 容れられぬ 上に 、至る所 に 起居 を 共に する 細君 さえ 自分 を 解して くれない のだ と 悟ったら 、定めて 心細い だろう 。 世の中 は かかる 細 君 を もって 充満 している と 云った 。 かかる 細 君 を もって 充満 して おり ながら 、皆 円満に くらして いる 。

順 境 に ある 者 が 細 君 の 心 事 を ここ まで に 解剖 する 必要 が ない 。

皮膚 病 に 罹 れば こそ 皮膚 の 研究 が 必要に なる 。

病気 も 無い のに 汚ない もの を 顕微鏡 で 眺める のは 、事なき に 苦しんで 肥柄杓 を 振り廻す と 一般 である 。

ただ この 順 境 が 一転 して 逆落し に 運命 の 淵 へ ころがり込む 時 、 いか な 夫婦 の 間 に も 気まずい 事 が 起る 。

親子 の 覊絆 も ぽつり と 切れる 。

美 くし いの は 血 の 上 を 薄く 蔽 う 皮 の 事 であった と 気 が つく 。

道也 は どこ まで 気 が ついた か 知ら ぬ 。

道也 の 三 たび 去った の は 、好んで 自から 窮地 に 陥る ため で は ない 。

罪 も ない 妻 に 苦労 を 掛ける ため で は なおさら ない 。

世間 が 己 れ を 容れぬ から 仕方 が ない のである 。

世 が 容れぬ なら なぜ こちら から 世に 容れられよう と は せぬ ？ 世に 容れられよう と する 刹那 に 道也 は 奇麗に 消滅 して しまう から である 。 道也 は 人格 に おいて 流俗 より 高い と 自信 している 。

流俗 より 高ければ 高い ほど 、低い ものの 手 を 引いて 、高い 方 へ 導いて やる のが 責任 である 。

高い と 知り ながら も 低き につく のは 、自から 多年 の 教育 を 受け ながら 、この 教育 の 結果 が もたらした 財宝 を 床下 に 埋むる ような もの である 。

自分 の 人格 を 他 に 及ぼさぬ 以上 は 、せっかく に 築き上げた 人格 は 、築きあげぬ 昔 と 同じく 無功力 で 、築き上げた 労力 だけ を 徒費 した 訳 に なる 。

英語 を 教え 、歴史 を 教え 、ある 時 は 倫理 さえ 教えた の は 、人格 の 修養 に 附随 して 蓄えられた 、芸 を 教えた のである 。 単に この 芸 を 目的 に して 学問 を した ならば 、教 場 で 書物 を 開いて さえ いれば 済む 。

書物 を 開いて 飯 を 食って 満足 して いる の は 綱渡り が 綱 を 渡って 飯 を 食い 、 皿 廻し が 皿 を 廻 わして 飯 を 食う の と 理論 に おいて 異なる ところ は ない 。

学問 は 綱渡り や 皿 廻し と は 違う 。

芸 を 覚える の は 末 の 事 である 。

人間 が 出来上る の が 目的 である 。

大小 の 区別 の つく 、軽重 の 等差 を 知る 、好悪 の 判然 する 、善悪 の 分界 を 呑み込んだ 、賢 愚 、真偽 、正邪 の 批判 を 謬まらざる 大丈夫 が 出来上がる の が 目的 である 。

道也 は こう 考えて いる 。

だから 芸 を 售って 口 を 糊 する の を 恥 辱 と せ ぬ と 同時に 、 学問 の 根底 たる 立脚 地 を 離 る る の を 深く 陋劣 と 心得た 。 彼 が 至る所 に 容れられぬ の は 、学問 の 本体 に 根拠地 を 構えて の 上 の 去就 である から 、彼自身 は 内 に 顧みて 疚しい ところ も なければ 、意気地 が ない と も 思いつかぬ 。 頑愚 など と 云う 嘲罵 は 、掌 へ 載せて 、夏 の 日 の 南 軒 に 、虫眼鏡 で 検査 しても 了解 が 出来ん 。

三 度 教師 と なって 三 度 追い出さ れた 彼 は 、追い出さ れ る たび に 博士 より も 偉大な 手柄 を 立てた つもりでいる 。

博士 は えらかろう 、しかし たかが 芸 で 取る 称号 である 。

富豪 が 製艦費 を 献納して 従五位 を ちょうだいする の と 大した 変り は ない 。

道也 が 追い出さ れた の は 道也 の 人物 が 高い から である 。

正しき 人 は 神 の 造れる すべて の うち にて 最も 尊き もの なり と は 西 の 国 の 詩人 の 言葉 だ 。

道 を 守る もの は 神 より も 貴し と は 道也 が 追わるる ごとに 心 の うち で 繰り返す 文句 である 。

ただし 妻君 は かつて この 文句 を 道也 の 口 から 聞いた 事 が ない 。

聞いて も 分かる まい 。

わから ねば こそ 餓え 死に も せ ぬ 先 から 、夫 に 対して 不平 な のである 。

不平 な 妻 を 気の毒 と 思わぬ ほど の 道也 で は ない 。

ただ 妻 の 歓心 を 得る ため に 吾 が 行く 道 を 曲げ ぬ だけ が 普通の 夫 と 違う のである 。

世 は 単に 人 と 呼ぶ 。

娶れば 夫 である 。

交われば 友 である 。

手 を 引けば 兄 、引かる れば 弟 である 。

社会 に 立てば 先覚者 に も なる 。

校舎 に 入れば 教師 に 違いない 。

さる を 単に 人 と 呼ぶ 。

人 と 呼んで 事 足る ほど の 世間 なら 単純 である 。

妻君 は 常に この 単純な 世界 に 住んで いる 。

妻君 の 世界 に は 夫 と して の 道也 の ほか に は 学者 と して の 道也 も ない 、志士 と して の 道也 も ない 。

道 を 守り 俗 に 抗する 道也 は なおさら ない 。

夫 が 行く先 き 先 き で 評判 が 悪く なる の は 、 夫 の 才 が 足ら ぬ から で 、 到る所 に 職 を 辞する の は 、 自から 求 む る 酔 興 に ほかなら ん と まで 考えて いる 。

酔 興 を 三 たび 重ねて 、東京 へ 出て 来た 道也 は 、もう 田舎 へ は 行か ぬ と 言い出した 。

教師 も もう やら ぬ と 妻君 に 打ち明けた 。

学校 に 愛想 を つかした 彼 は 、愛想 を つかした 社会 状態 を 矯正 する に は 筆 の 力 に よらねば ならぬ と 悟った のである 。

今 まで は いずこ の 果 で 、どんな 職業 を しよう と も 、己 れ さえ 真直 であれば 曲がった もの は 苧殻 の ように 向うで 折れ べき もの と 心得て いた 。

盛名 は わが 望む ところ で は ない 。

威望 も わが 欲する ところ で は ない 。

ただ わが 人格 の 力 で 、未来 の 国民 を かたちづくる 青年 に 、向上 の 眼 を 開か しむる ため 、取捨 分別 の 好例 を 自家 身上 に 示せば 足る と のみ 思い込んで 、思い込んだ 通り を 六 年 余り 実行して 、見事に 失敗した のである 。

渡る 世間 に 鬼 は ない と 云う から 、同情 は 正しき 所 、高き 所 、物 の 理窟 の よく 分かる 所 に 聚まる と 早合点 して 、この 年月 を 今度 こそ 、今度 こそ 、と 経験 の 足らぬ 吾身 に 、待ち受けた のは 生涯 の 誤り である 。

世 は わが 思う ほど に 高尚な もの で は ない 、鑑識 の ある もの で も ない 。

同情 と は 強き もの 、富める もの に のみ 随う 影 に ほかならぬ 。

ここ まで 進んで おらぬ 世 を 買い被って 、一足飛び に 田舎 へ 行った の は 、地ならし を せぬ 地面 の 上 へ 丈夫な 家 を 建てよう と あせる ような もの だ 。

建て かける が 早い か 、風 と 云い 雨 と 云う 曲者 が 来て 壊して しまう 。

地ならし を する か 、雨 風 を 退治る か せぬ うち は 、落ちついて この世 に 住め ぬ 。

落ちついて 住め ぬ 世 を 住める ように して やる のが 天下 の 士 の 仕事 である 。

金 も 勢 も ない もの が 天下 の 士 に 恥じ ぬ 事業 を 成す に は 筆 の 力 に 頼ら ねば ならぬ 。

舌 の 援 を 藉 ら ねば なら ぬ 。

脳味噌 を 圧搾 して 利他 の 智 慧 を 絞ら ねば ならぬ 。

脳味噌 は 涸れ る 、舌 は 爛れる 、筆 は 何 本 でも 折れる 、それ でも 世の中 が 云う 事 を 聞か なければ それまで である 。

しかし 天下 の 士 と いえ ども 食わず に は 働け ない 。

よし 自分 だけ は 食わ ん で 済む と しても 、妻 は 食わず に 辛抱 する 気遣 は ない 。

豊かに 妻 を 養わぬ 夫 は 、妻 の 眼 から 見れば 大 罪人 である 。

今年 の 春 、田舎 から 出て 来て 、芝 琴平町 の 安宿 へ 着いた 時 、道也 と 妻君 の 間 に は こんな 会話 が 起った 。

「教師 を お やめ なさる って 、これ から 何 を なさる おつもり です か 」「別に これ と 云う つもり も ない が ね 、まあ 、その うち 、どうか なる だろう 」「その 内 どうか なる だろう って 、それ じゃ まるで 雲 を 攫む ような 話し じゃ ありません か 」「そう さな 。 あんまり 判然と しちゃ いない 」「そう 呑気 じゃ 困ります わ 。 あなた は 男 だ から それ で ようご ざんしょう が 、 ちっと は 私 の 身 に も なって 見て 下さら なくっちゃ あ ……」 「 だ から さ 、 もう 田舎 へ は 行か ない 、 教師 に も ならない 事 に きめた ん だ よ 」 「 きめる の は 御 勝手 です けれども 、 きめたって 月給 が 取れ なけりゃ 仕方 が ない じゃ ありません か 」 「 月給 が とれ なくって も 金 が とれれば 、 よかろう 」 「 金 が とれれば …… そりゃ ようご ざん す と も 」 「 そん なら 、 いい さ 」 「 いい さって 、 御 金 が とれる ん です か 、 あなた 」 「 そう さ 、 まあ 取れる だろう と 思う の さ 」 「 どうして ？ 」「そこ は 今 考え中 だ 。

そう 着 、早々 計画 が 立つ もの か 」「だ から 心配に なる んです わ 。

いくら 東京 に いる と きめたって 、 きめた だけ の 思案 じゃ 仕方 が ない じゃ ありません か 」 「 どうも 御前 は むやみに 心配 性 で いけない 」 「 心配 も します わ 、 どこ へ いら しって も 折合 が わるくっちゃ 、 おや めに なる ん です もの 。 私 が 心配性 なら 、あなた は よっぽど 癇癪持ち です わ 」「そう かも 知れない 。

しかし おれ の 癇癪 は ……まあ 、いい や 。

どうにか 東京 で 食える よう に する から 」 「 御 兄さん の 所 へ いら しって 御 頼み な すったら 、 どう でしょう 」 「 うん 、 それ も 好 いが ね 。 兄 は いったい人 の 世話 なんか する 男 じゃない よ 」 「 あら 、 そう 何でも 一人 で きめて 御 しまい に なる から 悪 るい ん です わ 。

昨日 も あんなに 親切に いろいろ 言って 下さった じゃ ありません か 」 「 昨日 か 。 昨日 は いろいろ 世話 を 焼く ような 事 を 言った 。

言った が ね ……」 「 言って も いけない ん です か 」 「 いけな か ない よ 。

言う の は 結構 だ が ……あんまり 当 に ならない から な 」「なぜ ？

」「なぜって 、その 内 だんだん わかる さ 」「じゃ 御友達 の 方 に でも 願って 、あした から でも 運動 を なすったら いい でしょう 」「友達って 別に 友達 なんか ありゃ しない 。 同級生 は みんな 散って しまった 」「だって 毎年 年始 状 を 御寄こし に なる 足立さん なんか 東京 で 立派に して いらっしゃる じゃありませんか 」「足立 か 、うん 、大学教授 だね 」「そう 、あなた の ように 高く ばかり 構えて いらっしゃる から 人 に 嫌われる んです よ 。 大学 教授 だ ね って 、大学 の 先生 に なりゃ 結構じゃ ありません か 」「そう か ね 。 じゃ 足立 の 所 へ でも 行って 頼んで 見よう よ 。

しかし 金 さえ 取れれば 必ず 足立 の 所 へ 行く 必要 は なかろう 」「あら 、まだ あんな 事 を 云って いらっしゃる 。 あなた は よっぽど 強情 ね 」「うん 、おれ は よっぽど 強情だ よ 」
