私 は 今 から 35年 前

ここ 京都 の お寺 で 生まれました

お寺 の 子供 と して 育ちました けれども

中学校 ・高校 は カトリック の 学校 に 行って おりました

（ 笑 ）

お寺 に 生まれながら に して

キリスト教 の 教育 を 受ける

これ は 非常に 珍しい こと で は あります けれども

家族 それ から 親族 友達 を 含め

皆 暖かく 見守って くれました

大学 時代 に 私 アイルランド に 行った こと が ありました

アイルランド は ご存知 の 通り

敬虔な カトリック の 国 です けれども

そこ の ある 田舎 の B &B ;に 行った 時 に

女将 さん に 私 の 生い立ち を 説明 しました

すると 女将 さん は 急に 顔色 を 変えて 次 の よう に 言いました

「あなた の 国 で は 何 で そんな こと が できる の ？

アイルランド で そんな こと を やったら

あなた 殺されて も 文句 を 言え ない わ よ 」と

こういう 風 に 言われて しまいました

私 は すごく 若かった ので 残念 ながら

その 女将 さん に 全く 反論 する こと が できません でした

日本 人 の 宗教 観 は 非常に 独特な もの が あります

例えば 多く の 日本人 は キリスト の 誕生日 である クリスマス を お祝い し

年末 に は お寺 で 除夜 の 鐘 を 聞いて

そして お 正月 に は 神社 に 初詣 に 行きます

日本 以外 の 方 から は 「なんて 節操 の ない 」と いう 風 に

言わ れる こと も ある ん です けれども

しかし ここ 日本 で は 非常に こういった 宗教 の 寛容性 と いう の は

一般 的 です

私 は この 宗教 の 違い と いう の は

「食 」の 違い に 似て いる んじゃないか な と いう 風 に 思ってます

例えば 和食 と 洋食 の 違い を 考えて みましょう

洋食 の コース 料理 を 頼みます と

メインディッシュ という の が 出て きます

その コース の ハイライト です けれども

和食 に は こう 言った メインディッシュ と いう の は ありません

例えば 伝統 的な 懐石 料理 を 注文 します と

先 付け 椀 物 から 最後 の ご飯 に いたる まで

メイン という 考え方 は ありません

私 は この 食 と 同じ ように この 日本人 の 宗教観 も

ある 特定 の 宗教 だけ を 特別 視 する ので は なく

全て の 宗教 に 共通 する 倫理 観 もしくは 哲学

こういった もの を 日本 人 は 大事に している と 思います

ですから 日本 人 の 宗教 観 と いう の は

Believeinsomething（何か を 信じる ）で は なくて

Respectforsomething（何か を 敬う ）もしくは Respectforothers（他者 を 敬う ）

こういう スタイル が 日本 人 の 宗教 観 です

ですから 日本 で は

色 ん な 宗教 を 信じて いる 方 が いらっしゃいます が

お互いに 尊重 して おります し

実は 私 が いる この 妙心寺 でも

お 寺 です けれども 神社 の 神様 に

お 経 を あげる 機会 も 結構 あります

そして お 寺 の 中 に 神社 が ある 所 も 沢山 あります

ですから 日本 の 仏教 と いう の は 非常に 特異な 形 を とって います

例外 は あります けれども 日本 の お坊さん は 妻帯 を 許されて います し

修行 中 は お 肉 ・お 魚 を 慎んで

精進 料理 を いただきます が

修行 が 終わって しまえば 特別 厳しい 戒律 は ありません

しかし この 日本 で は 物 を 残す もしくは 無駄に する

こういった こと は 非常に 敬遠 さ れます

もし この 仏教 発祥 の 地 である インド の 方 が

日本 の 仏教 を ご覧 に なったら

「これ は 仏教 で は ない んじゃないか 」と おっしゃる かも しれません

インド それ から 東南 アジア を 中心 と して 信仰 されて いる

上座 部 仏教 で は 戒律 の 遵守

それ から 教程 の 学習 瞑想 の 修行

こういった こと を 目的 と されて います

しかし ここ 日本 の 仏教 は

先祖 供養 そして

普段 の 生活 の 中 で の 礼節 を 敬う

こういった こと を 重視 して います

じゃあ もし 私 たち が 今 まで 1500年 以上 かけて

築いて きた この スタイル

これ を 「仏教 で ない 」と いう んだったら どう 呼んだら いい んでしょう か ？

やはり これ は どうしても

「日本 の 仏教 」と 言う しか ない と 思います

日本 の 仏教 は 中国

それ から 日本 の 古来 の 宗教 である

神道 の 影響 を 受けて

日本 に 相応しい 形 で 洗練 されて きました

ですから 元々 ブッダ が 始めた 原始的な 仏教 と は

実践 の 方法 は 違います けれども

インド に しろ 東南 アジア に しろ ここ 日本 に しろ

その 根底 に ある の は ブッダ が 唱えられた

素晴らしい 哲学 と 教義 に 基づいて います

私 は 日本 と インド の この 仏教 の 違い と いう の は

実は カレー に 似て いる んじゃ ない か な と 思って います

（ 笑 ）

インド で は このように 非常に スパイシー で 辛い カレー を

皆さん 召し上がります

カレー も インド が 発祥 の 地 な ん です けれども

この インド の 方 が 日本 の 私たち が すごく 食べ 慣れて いる

甘くて まろやかな カレー

皆 好きな 方 沢山 いらっしゃる と 思います が

あの カレー を 召し上がったら 「 これ カレー じゃない じゃない か 」 と

こう おっしゃる かも しれません

じゃあ 私 たち が 慣れ 親しんで いる この カレー

これ を 何 と 呼んだら いい んでしょう か ？

やはり 私 たち は これ を 「 日本 の カレー 」 と

言う しか ない と 思います

確かに 調理 法 ・具材 は 違う かも しれません が

この ルー に お 肉 や お 魚 そして 野菜 を 入れて 煮込んで

ご飯 と もしくは パン と 一緒に いただく

この スタイル は インド でも 日本 でも 共通 して います

私事 です が 私 は 大学 時代 に 農学 部 に おりました

その 農学 部 時代 に 実は カレー に 関する ある 実験 を 行った こと が あります

これ が どういう 実験 か と いう と

まず 部屋 を ２つ 用意 します

まず 一 つ目 の 部屋 は 日本 の 夏 の 気候 の ように

すごく 暑くて しかも 湿度 が 高い

高温 多湿 の 部屋 を 用意 します

もう 一 つ の 部屋 は インド の 夏 の よう に

すごく 暑い んだ けれども 湿度 が あまり ない

カラッと した 気候 の 部屋 を 用意 します

そこ に 世界中 から 集まられた 留学 生 も 含めて

30人 の 学生 さん に しばらく いて もらって

その 部屋 の 中 で インド と 日本 の カレー

両方 食べ 比べて もらいました

そして どちら が 美味しい か 判断 して もらいました

すると 日本 の 部屋 で 食べた 学生 さん の 内

30人 の 内 20人 以上 の 方 が

日本 の カレー の 方 が 美味しい と いう 回答 が ありました

同じ この 30人 が また 別の 日 に

この インド の お部屋 で カレー を 食べた 際 に は

インド の カレー の 方 が 美味しい と おっしゃった 学生 さん が

30人 中 20人 以上 いらっしゃいました

つまり 日本 の 部屋 で 食べた 場合 に は 日本 の カレー が

そして インド の 部屋 で 食べた 場合 に は インド の カレー の 方 が 美味しい と いう

回答 が 得られた わけです

このよう に 食 と いう の は その 土地 の 気候 ・風土

こういった もの に 大きく 左右さ れます

宗教 も 同じ で もちろん この 気候 ・風土

それ から 歴史 ・文化 ・伝統

こういった 色んな 要素 で その 国 に 相応しい 形 に

洗練 されて まいります

私 たち に 馴染み の ある 日本人 の この 寛容性 の ある 宗教観

私 は これ を 世界 の 皆様 と シェア できれば

世界 の 皆様 に 素晴らしい アイデア を 提供 できる と

私 は 強く 信じて います

今 から 数 年 前 に なります が

兵庫 県 に 尼崎 と いう 町 が あります

そこ で 素晴らしく 画期的な

FM の 番組 が 始まりました

この 番組 タイトル は ズバリ

『8時 だ ヨ ！神さま 仏さま 』と いいます （笑 ）

元々 は これ は 『8 時 だ ヨ ！ 神仏 集合 』 だった ん です けれども （ 笑 ）

それ は いい と し まして

これ が どういう 番組 か と 言います と

毎週 水曜日 ８時 から 30分 の 番組 な んです けれども

ご覧 の よう に ある リスナー から の お悩み を

神社 の 神主 さん 仏教 の お 坊さん

キリスト教 の 牧師 さん この ３名 が 一緒に なって 解決 する と

こういう 番組 な ん です

（ 拍手 ）

ありがとう ございます

これ は 非常に 画期的である 宗教 の お 坊さん が

ある 特定 の もの に 対して 回答 する

これ は あり得る 話 だ と 思う ん です けれど

全く 違う 宗教 の お 坊さん が ３人 集まって

一つ の お悩み を 解決 して いく これ は 前代未聞 です し

非常に 画期的な プログラム です

リスナー の 方 に して みれば

一つ の 固定化 された 回答 だけ で は なくて

世の中 に は 色んな 解決 方法 が ある の か と いう こと で

非常に 安心 感 が 得られます

そして もう 一 つ 今年 の ２月 です けれども

私 が 提案 し まして ここ 京都 で これ また 画期的な

素晴らしい イベント を 開催 いたしました

それ が これ

「宗教者 駅伝 」です （笑 ）

この 駅伝 と いう の は 日本 人 に 非常に 馴染み の ある 競技 だ と 思います が

実は この 駅伝 は ここ 京都 で

今 から 百 年 前 に 生み出された 競技 です

この 世界 を 代表 する 宗教 都市 京都

そして この 駅伝 の 発祥 の 地 である ここ 京都

ここ に 世界中 から 色んな 宗教 の 宗教家 ・お坊さん に

集まって いただいて 宗教 家 だけ で つなぐ 駅伝 を

開催 した ん です

これ は 宗教 対抗 で は なくて

例えば 第 一 走者 は 神社 の 神主 さん

第 二 走者 は 仏教 の お 坊さん

第 三 走者 は キリスト教 の 神父 さん

第 四 走者 は イスラム 教 の イマーム と いう 風 に

宗教 を ミックス して 一 つの たすき を つなぐ という の を

複数 の チーム を 作って この 駅伝 を 開催 した わけです

現代 で は 宗教 の お互い の 理解 が 必要だ と いう こと で

対話 ・対談 こういった こと も よく 行われて います けれど

会議 室 で 対談 を して も なかなか 発信 力 が ありません し

この 駅伝 という の は

パッと 見て 分かります から 市民 の 皆さん と 一緒に 走ります ので

一体 感 が ある そして 直接 的に メッセージ が 伝わります

それ から 走らない と いけない ので

必然 的に 若い 宗教 家 が 活躍 できる と いう こと です

そして これ 実 は 京都 だけ で は なくて

ヨーロッパ の ルクセンブルク でも

同じ コンセプト の 駅伝 が 開催 されて

実は この 駅伝 を 介して 宗教 の 融和 を 図ろう と いう 動き が

今 世界 に 広まり つつ あります

ですから この 混迷 を 極めた 世の中

宗教 家 自ら が 自分 の 身 を 削って

身 を 挺 して そして 宗教 の 融和 を 図って いく

これ は 私 非常に 大事な こと だ と 思って います

さて もし 私 が 今

大学 時代 に お 会い した アイルランド の

B＆Bの 女将 さん に 再会 する 機会 が あれば

私 は 今 だったら 堂々と

自信 を 持って 言える と 思います

確かに 全て の 宗教 に おいて

その 教義 に 忠実である ・守る こと

これ は 非常に 大事な こと です

しかし 世の中 に は もっと 大切な こと が あります

それ は 信じる 宗教 が 違って いて も

お互い を 尊重 し そして 仲良く する と いう こと です

日本 で は 色 ん な 宗教 を 信じて いる人 が います が

宗教 が 違う から と いって 争い ・揉め事 こういった こと は

ほとんど 起こりません

しかし テレビ で ニュース を 見ます と 世界 を 見渡します と

一つ の 宗教 を 信じる あまり 他の 宗教 の 方 と 争ったり

罵り 合ったり そういう 場面 が 散見 さ れます

しかし 私 は それ は 本末 転倒 だ と 思います

宗教 の 本質 は 盲目 的に 一 つ の もの を 信じる こと では ありません

世界 に は 沢山の 人 が いて それぞれ 皆さん 感謝 の 気持ち を 持って

安心感 を 得て そして 自分 の 人生 を 全うする
