They say that to be a poet you have to go down to hell sometime.
The first time I went to jail I was not surprised by the noise
of the padlocks, nor the doors that were closing, nor the bars,
nor anything of everything that I had imagined.
Perhaps because the jail is in a place that is quite open.
Se ve el cielo.
You can see the sky.
The seagulls fly by and you think you have the sea there next to you.
Que estás muy cerquita de la playa.
That you are very close to the beach.
But in reality the seagulls go to eat at the garbage dump that is close to the jail.
I kept going in and suddenly I saw prisoners moving through the pavilions, crossing.
It was like taking a step back and thinking that I could
perfectamente haber sido alguno de ellos.
perfectly have been one of them.
De haber tenido otra historia, otro contexto, otra suerte.
To have had another story, another context, another luck.
Because nobody, nobody, can choose the place where they are born.
para coordinar un taller de escritura.
to coordinate a writing workshop.
The prison service gave them a piece of land in the back of the prison
and there they built the building of the university center.
The first time I met the prisoners,
I asked them why they were asking for a writing workshop
and they told me that they wanted to be able to put on paper
everything they couldn't say and couldn't do.
I decided there that I wanted to put poetry in jail.
So I told them why we didn't work with poetry,
si sabían lo qué era la poesía.
if they knew what poetry was.
Nobody had a clue what poetry really was.
And they also told me that the workshop was not only
for university prisoners, but also encompassed
pour les détenus universitaires, mais englobait également
a toda la población de presos comunes.
to the entire population of common prisoners.
And then I said to start this workshop I need
alguna herramienta que tengamos todos.
some tool that we all have.
Y esa herramienta era el lenguaje.
And that tool was language.
Entonces teníamos lenguaje, teníamos taller. Podíamos tener poesía.
So we had language, we had a workshop. We could have poetry.
But what I did not calculate was that inequality also lives in prison
and there were many of them who didn't even have a full primary.
Many did not handle cursive, just a printing press.
Tampoco escribían demasiado fluidamente.
Nor did they write very fluently.
So we started looking for short poems, very short, but very powerful.
Y empezamos a leer y leímos un autor y leímos otro autor
And we started reading and we read one author and we read another author
and when reading those short poems, they all realized
that what poetic language did was break
una determianda lógica y armaba otro sistema.
a certain logic and put together another system.
Breaking the logic of language is also breaking the logic of the system
al que ellos están acostumbrados a responder.
to which they are used to responding.
that made them understand very quickly, but very quickly,
that with poetic language they were going to say absolutely what they wanted.
They say that to be a poet you have to go down to hell sometime.
Y a ellos infierno les sobra. Les sobra infierno.
And they have plenty of hell. They have hell left over.
Once one of them said: "You never sleep in prison.
Nunca se puede dormir en la cárcel. Jamás podés cerrar los párpados".
You can never sleep in jail. You can never close your eyelids. "
Y entonces, yo hice así como ahora,
And then, I did just like now,
A moment of silence and I tell you guys, that's poetry, that.
The prison universe is on display, they have it in their hand.
All this they say, that they never sleep.
Esto destila miedo. Todo esto no escrito. Todo esto es la poesía.
This exudes fear. All this unwritten. All this is poetry.
Entonces empezamos a apropiarnos de ese infierno.
Then we begin to appropriate that hell.
And we went straight, headfirst, into the seventh circle.
And in that seventh circle of hell, so ours, and so dear,
They learned that the walls could be invisible, to make scream
to the windows, to hide in the shadows.
The first year that the workshop had finished we convened
to a small New Year's Eve party how do you do
when a job is done with so much love.
Uno quiere celebrar y hacer una fiesta.
You want to celebrate and have a party.
We summon family, friends, university authorities.
All they had to do was read a poem,
receive your diploma, applause and that was our whole simple party.
The only thing I want to be able to leave is the moment when those men,
a veces enormes al lado mío.
sometimes huge next to me.
Or very young boys, but with tremendous pride,
they held their paper and trembled like boys and sweated
and they read his poem with absolutely broken voices.
That moment made me think a lot that surely many of them
it was the first time anyone had applauded them for something they had done.
There are things in prison that cannot be done.
In jail you cannot dream, in jail you cannot cry.
There are words that are practically prohibited like the word time,
la palabra futuro, la palabra deseo.
the word future, the word desire.
But we dared to dream and to dream a lot
because we decided they were going to write a book.
Not only did they write a book but they also bound it.
Eso fue a fines de 2010.
That was in late 2010.
Hicimos una segunda apuesta y escribimos otro libro.
We made a second bet and wrote another book.
Y encuadernaron otro libro.
And they bound another book.
That was a little while ago, at the end of last year.
What I can see week by week is how they are becoming
en otras personas, cómo se van transformando.
in other people, how they are transforming.
How the word gives them a dignity that they did not know,
ni siquiera podían imaginar.
they couldn't even imagine.
They did not know that this dignity existed and that it could be theirs.
At the time of the workshop, in that beloved hell we have, we all give.
We open our hands and hearts and give
lo que tenemos lo que podemos. Todos.
what we have what we can. Everybody.
Todos por igual.
Everyone equally.
That way one feels that at least very little
is repairing that tremendous social fracture that makes
jail as the only destination awaits many like them.
"I have to get an infinite thread to sew this big injury."
La poesía hace eso. Cose las lastimaduras de la exclusión.
Poetry does that. Sew up the injuries of exclusion.
Abre puertas. La poesía hace de espejo.
Open doors. Poetry acts as a mirror.
Inventa un espejo, que es el poema.
Make up a mirror, which is the poem.
They recognize each other, look at the poem and write
from what they are and from what they write.
In order to write it is necessary for them to appropriate the moment
They have to get into the head and look for that little bit of freedom
that never, that nobody can ever take away at the time of writing
and that this also helps them to verify that freedom is possible
even being inside the jail and that the only gate we have
in our wonderful space is the word grate and that everyone,
en nuestro infierno, ardemos de felicidad
in our hell we burn with happiness
When the wick of the word is lit
(Aplausos)
I told them a lot about jail, a lot about what I experience
every week and what I enjoy and transform along with them.
But you don't know what I would like you to be able to feel, live,
experimentar aunque sea unos pocos segundos
experiment even for a few seconds
what I enjoy every week and makes me who I am.
(Aplausos)
"El corazón mastica lágrimas de tiempo
"The heart chews tears of time
ciego de ver esa luz
blind to see that light
oculta la velocidad de la existencia
hides the speed of existence
donde reman las imágenes
where the images row
lucha, no se deja ir.
fight, don't let go.
El corazón se agrieta bajo miradas tristes
Heart cracks under sad stares
cabalga en tormentas que riegan fuego
Ride on storms that water fire
levanta pechos aminorizados de vergüenza,
raises breasts diminished with shame,
knows that the method is not just read and follow
también desea ver el infinito azul.
you also want to see the blue infinity.
The heart sits thinking about things
lucha por no caer en lo común,
fight not to fall into the common,
intenta aprender a amar sin herir,
try to learn to love without hurting,
respira el sol dándose coraje,
breathe the sun giving you courage,
se entrega, viaja a la razón.
surrenders, travels to reason.
El corazón pelea entre ciénagas,
The heart fights among swamps,
Le cœur se bat parmi les marais,
bordea la línea del inframundo,
skirts the line of the underworld,
falls without strength and does not surrender to the easy
mientras pasos desparejos de embriaguez
while uneven steps of drunkenness
despiertan,
they wake up,
despiertan la quietud".
they awaken stillness. "

I am a prisoner in Unit 48 of San Martín,
hoy es mi día de salidas transitorias.
today is my day of transitory departures.
Y a mí la poesía y la literatura
And poetry and literature to me
me cambiaron la vida.
they changed my life.
