Podcast Italiano (2), La mia vita da musicista

La mia vita da musicista

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti su podcast italiano.

E come uso i video di Mr. Wissen 2 Go?

A livello linguistico. Bianconeri bianchi e neri. Ok, potete dire in entrambi i modi.

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti su podcast italiano. Hallo und herzlich willkommen zum italienischen Podcast. Hello everyone and welcome to the Italian podcast. Olá a todos e bem-vindos ao podcast italiano. For those who are new, Podcast Italiano is a podcast, but also a YouTube channel, where you can listen to content in natural Italian, through authentic materials, authentic content, interesting and hopefully also engaging, that is, that involve you and that make you want to listen for a lot of time. This is an intermediate level episode, which means it's not too difficult, it's not as advanced as the last episode and as you can feel I don't have a prepared text. I usually prepare a text for these intermediate level episodes but today I want to try a different thing, I want to try to talk freely, without having any script, a bit like I do for reflections without transcriptions, but for this episode I will provide a transcription.

And because I decided to do so I decided to do this because ... for two reasons a reason why the problem of ... episodes with a script, the completely written episodes that I read is that when I read you understand that I am reading and it seems to me that there is always this feeling of documentary on TV or something like that, something a bit fake, artificial. Which can also be interesting because surely at the linguistic level a prepared episode of this kind is more eloquent, because I am not Cicero I cannot improvise and make a fantastic speech on a linguistic level, so they are two quite different things, in my opinion. Som også kan være interessant fordi absolutt på språklig nivå er en slik forberedt episode mer veltalende, fordi jeg ikke er Cicero, kan jeg ikke improvisere og holde en fantastisk tale på språklig nivå, så de er to ganske forskjellige ting, i min mening. voglio provare anche questa cosa, voglio anche provare a parlare senza avere un copione, l'ho fatto anche in passato ma per breve tempo, lo faccio sempre nelle riflessioni senza trascrizioni ma voglio provare a farlo oggi in questo episodio di livello intermedio, e mi interessa anche sapere che cosa vuoi ne pensate. I also want to try this thing, I also want to try to speak without having a script, I have also done it in the past but for a short time, I always do it in reflections without transcriptions but I want to try to do it today in this intermediate level episode, and I also interested in what you want to think about it.

So being an intermediate level episode you can read the full transcript on Ialiano Podcast and also find the English translation of the most complicated words, or at least that I consider more complicated a funny thing has gone very little fun of this episode that I had it already registered.

I had recorded 40 minutes of episode but I realized that I recorded it with a not very good audio, that is it was distorted, the audio was distorted and I thought ... I thought a little bit whether to leave the audio in that way, if publish that episode but I don't like having distorted audio, I prefer to re-record and so this is the second attempt. Perhaps by recording and repeating the same things I will have a little clearer ideas, we hope. The second reason, among other things, why I decided to try this format is because recently I started listening to a podcast similar to mine, in a sense, for learning French, which is called Inner French.

And the interesting thing about Inner French is that its creator Hugo makes very long episodes, half-hour episodes completely transcribed on fairly complicated subjects, subjects like, I don't know ... Islamophobia, being homosexual in France, the threat of of the excessive use of the plastic or ... however quite controversial and complicated things and to me this thing pleases because they are themes that I find deeply interesting and really allow to immerse themselves in the French language for half an hour.

Now I have no real need to listen to intermediate French because my ... my understanding exceeds its level and I understand 100% of what it says, but I must say that it is actually interesting and it is also a satisfaction to understand 100% of what he says. And anyway the topics he deals with are really interesting, they are so interesting that I want ... I want to listen to his podcast, and I haven't practiced French for a long time, I really didn't listen to anything in French, for a long time I didn't 'I did. His podcast is so well done that it came to me ... I felt like it again.

So this makes me very happy, I hope that Italian podcast can, let's say, be the same for you. My number one goal now is really to make this project, the content I make interesting. Use Italian to talk about things, not to teach you the Italian language, at least not only. This is also my strategy, my vision for the future of this project and to distinguish myself even a little from what other people who have projects on YouTube do, other Podcasts for learning Italian. I find that very often they speak Italian, they speak Italian expressions, Italian words, things of this type, or they speak, I don't know how beautiful and good Italian food is, how beautiful Italian cities are. I ... surely it is interesting, all these things are interesting, but I want to do something different and I hope that it can also interest you precisely because it is a little different from what is already there, I want to do ... I would like to do more in the future content even a little ... controversial or better, dealing with controversial or even more personal issues, things like this.

The key word is that it is interesting, this is really ... the central node ... the central node means ... a node is a "knot" in English, when you knot shoes, for example - or we also say tie the shoes, because those strings ... the strings of the shoes are called laces and we practically tie the shoes or tie the shoes, make a knot. In Italian the node of the question is said which means the central point of the question, the central node of the question is this, that is, that the contents must be interesting. Lately I have convinced myself further - I already knew it but I have convinced myself again of this thing - that content is the most important thing and perhaps the only important thing in my opinion in language learning.

They must be interesting, engaging, even, as Stephen Krashen says, and in this way the obstacles are not really obstacles, especially if ... when the input we receive, the content we read or watch (I meant: listen) is at a level maybe a little bit more difficult than ours or at a level that corresponds to ours, even lower, but the important thing is that they are interesting. For example, I listen to Inner French, which is easier than my level, isn't it? It is a lower level, but still interesting and this allows me to listen to French and have input almost every day.

Another way I have convinced myself of the importance of content is the case of the German language. Maybe you know, if you saw my video on ... which is called "Failing to learn languages" in English, it is a video in which I explain practically why I have, say, I have failed, I have not had much success in learning some languages between which the German. German is the last language that (better: in which) in a way I thought I had failed. Well, I started learning German again and I did it for two reasons. No cóż, znowu zacząłem uczyć się niemieckiego i zrobiłem to z dwóch powodów. One because I found a really very interesting channel called MrWissen2go, it is a channel of a German boy who talks about socio-cultural, political issues that I find very interesting for me.

And this is an important thing, is that they are interesting for me, because if they are not interesting for me, if I do not find them interesting it is useless. And you are different people, I hope that what I'm talking about can be interesting, but if you don't care what I'm talking about don't listen because it's not useful for learning Italian. It must be interesting, otherwise you will stop listening. If I make an episode on a topic that doesn't interest you, you don't listen to it, I say it against my interests, but don't listen to it because it's not useful and it's frustrating. I have listened in German for perhaps too long things that didn't interest me, that were too complicated for me and this didn't help me much. But now having found this channel, I am really full of energy and desire to learn German every day.

And another thing I do - and this is where today's sponsor, LingQ, comes into play - is, in fact ... I started again, I started using wink.com is a platform created by the extraordinary Polyglot Steve Kaufman (or "Kaufman" in German) that I recently interviewed. It is a platform that allows you to read and listen in a simplified way… indeed, I would say listen and read in a simplified way. First of all, they have a very large library of materials in each language, clearly larger in the main languages. Materials that are made up of text and audio, so you can read and listen. Read in a simplified way because you can highlight words you don't know, or blocks of words, whole sentences even you don't know, and you basically get a translation - actually they call it "hints", or several "hints", hints I would call them in Italian - which, then, if it is a fairly common word or a fairly common phrase, that is three or four words that, let's say, occur often, come back often, often these suggestions are made by users.

If it is a very particular phrase that is in a text but is not common in the language then the system uses Google Translate, which is still useful and in this way, really, it simplifies and speeds up learning or reading very much. . I don't know how long it would take me to read the same texts if I had to search the dictionary online too - but the online dictionary too slow - all the words I don't know. E come uso i video di Mr. Wissen 2 Go? And how do I use Mr. Wissen 2 Go videos? Basically LingQ has a browser extension. You can import the subtitles of YouTube videos with this extension and study them on LingQ, which is a really great thing because I import Mr. Wissen2Go videos in a totally automatic way and study the text in this way, you can do it with my videos , with videos from other youtubers who may have subtitles under their videos.

There are also automatic subtitles made by YouTube and sometimes they work pretty well I have to say if the audio is good and if the articulation-… the way the speaker speaks, shall we say, is good enough. They are not always perfect and above all there is not a very correct division into sentences, so it is better maybe you are getting videos with subtitles. But yeah, that's a really good thing, you can do it with Netflix too - you can't watch Netflix on LingQ because there's no embedding, there's no embedding on LingQ - but yes, check out LingQ. If you want to subscribe you can make an annual subscription, you have a 5% discount if you use the link that I will put in the shownotes, in the notes of this episode, which is added to the already present 30% discount if you make an annual subscription, that is 30% discount compared to paying every month. So I recommend you take a look and I am very happy to use LingQ now everyday for my German.

Let's move on to today's topic, in fact, to offer you some interesting contents. I wanted to tell you the story of how I became a musician and a little bit of my experience as a musician. Let's start from the origins: I don't listen to the music other people listen to. I know this phrase can make me seem a bit of a snob. It just so happens that when I was 12 or 13 I got interested in a musical group called Dream Theater and this happened because of my brother because at that age, having an older brother, an older brother, you do and you copy and imitate everything your brother does. And my brother, who was mainly interested in rock and metal music - and I copied it, I listened to the same things he listened to - had found a musical group that did this very particular genre which is called Progressive Metal, we can say progressive metal. Maybe you don't listen to Metal, you have no idea what this strange genre is. To explain what this genre is, I can tell you that it is the fusion of metal, maybe you have more or less an idea of what metal is, something like that.

And the so-called genre of progressive rock, or progressive rock, which is a genre born in the 70s that practically merged rock with other musical genres such as jazz, classical music. A genre that was very eclectic, which had many influences. If you have ever heard of bands like Genesis, Yes, or what do I know ... in Italy we also have many bands like PFM. PFM is an acronym for Premiata Forneria Marconi, or Le Orme, or the Bronze Ballet. In Italia la scena progressive Rock negli anni 70 era davvero molto molto florida e questi gruppi italiani venivano ascoltati all'estero, che è una cosa che secondo me oggi non esiste più. In Italy the progressive Rock scene in the 70s was very, very flourishing and these Italian groups were listened to abroad, which is something that in my opinion no longer exists today.

Cioè, forse all'epoca, negli anni 70, ascoltavano più i nostri gruppi italiani rispetto ad adesso. That is, perhaps at the time, in the 70s, they listened more to our Italian groups than now. Certainly more than our bands are listened to abroad now, but perhaps also our pop singers, I don't know to tell the truth. But yes, it was a very prosperous period for Italy but above all also in England, I must say England was the country where this kind of fact was born. Pink Floyd also had some progressive influences we can say. Well this group I was telling you about, which is actually a group from the 90s and 2000s - which is still in business, they are called Dream Theater - makes a genre that combines metal and progressive rock, which is a strange fusion. I'll give you an example of one of their pieces to make you understand more or less what it is about.

Well listening to this group has changed my life a lot for two reasons, and one reason is that when I was 12 I started going on the internet, going to the forums to read what fans were saying about the group, to see the discussions they were having, all these things that I found very interesting. And these discussions naturally took place in English, it was all in English and it was an English that I understood very hard, hardly, hardly understood because my English in middle school English, so it was not at all easy for me to understand. But for me it was very interesting and this allowed me to expose myself, I don't know, to have a very very large input in the English language. Yes, this is my first way, it changed my life, let's say, listening to this group.

A livello linguistico. Auf der sprachlichen Ebene. On a linguistic level. Second influence is that this group had - and still has - a keyboard player. I mean, a keyboard player… maybe you know what a keyboard is, a keyboard is [key sounds]. This is a keyboard, a computer keyboard. A keyboard as a musical instrument is an instrument that looks a bit like a piano, in fact the keyboard is the white and black or white and black keys. Bianconeri bianchi e neri. Schwarz-weiße Bianconeri. Black and white Bianconeri. Ok, potete dire in entrambi i modi. Ok, you can say both ways. Il pianoforte ha una tastiera. The piano has a keyboard. But there are many instruments that have a keyboard, the church organ has a keyboard. The electric organ, the Hammond organ, the Hammond Organ has a keyboard. There are many instruments, the accordion has a keyboard. The keyboard can also be electronic, which is the instrument we are talking about in this case. Well this group had, ha, a really very good keyboard player, very virtuoso, I had never seen such a thing. This keyboard player is called Joan rudens and you can search on YouTube, maybe I'll put a clip, a small piece of how it sounds. He is really an excellent keyboard player, a pianist also, really, phenomenal virtuosic, with an incredible technique.

And the thing that fascinated me is that with this instrument you can really do anything, you can make any sound, you can make the orchestra, you can make the piano, you can make a synthesizer, you can make, I don't know, a violin you can make a ... I know, of the bells, you can do, you can be everything. puoi fare, emulare qualsiasi suono. you can do, emulate any sound. And this thing had really struck me and then seeing how it sounded had me all the more, that is even more, it had struck me a lot. Unlike many kids who maybe listen to rock they want to be guitarists or singers or drummers I was a bit of an exception because I wanted to be a keyboard player and there are few keyboardists around, I have to tell the truth, because there are there is a 'inflation of guitarists, there are many guitarists, many singers, but there are very few keyboard players, you can't even see the shadow of it, which means that we are very few.

E allora come si fa a diventare tastierista? So how do you become a keyboard player? C'è una scuola di tastieristi? Gibt es eine Schule für Keyboarder? Is there a keyboardist school? C'è un corso? Gibt es einen Kurs? Is there a course? Ci sono degli insegnanti? Are there any teachers? I didn't know how to become a keyboard player and then what we did - and I was 12 13, so with my parents - we went to a music school, a music institute nearby and found out they were taking keyboard courses. So you could at least theoretically learn the keyboard, and I said, “Mmm, but why not? Mi piace molto questo strumento, magari posso imparare a suonare in questa maniera, come Jordan rudess. I really like this instrument, maybe I can learn to play this way, like Jordan rudess. Sarebbe interessante, sarebbe molto divertente”. Es wäre interessant, es würde viel Spaß machen. It would be interesting, it would be a lot of fun ”. Actually then I have to say that I enrolled in this music school, I started attending music courses, but the professor didn't really know so much about keyboards, he wasn't a keyboard expert, he was an exceptional pianist, truly a fantastic pianist.

And what he did is ... he promised to teach me to play the keyboard, in a certain sense he deceived me a bit, because I never learned to play the keyboard, because in fact I started learning piano right away. , classical piano, so to learn, I don't know the sonnets, the studies ... over the years [I started] playing Bach ... ("bac", we say), Mozart or, I don't know ... classical piano, so music classical. And it wasn't really my initial interest, then I must say that over time I also started to like this kind of music a lot, which is certainly a huge musical genre. But I've never been a total fan of classical music, that is, I've always liked rock and metal and progressive rock and progressive metal, and that's what I still listen to today. Then I must say that now I listen to different things, I like to listen to different genres and I must say that also thanks to the fact that I started listening to this group, Dream Theater, which in themselves have many musical influences, which has opened up my very own ... my horizons and my musical tastes and I started listening to many different genres.

I think that without them maybe you will listen to pop music, and there is nothing wrong with listening to pop music, if you like pop listen to pop, I don't like pop, almost for nothing, contemporary pop does not attract me not at all, it's not for me, I find the other one generally quite trivial, with some exceptions, but musically not interesting. And it's something I always complain about and Erika knows it very well, I complain a lot about the banality of pop music, especially Italian pop music, but also international music is very very repetitive musically. And so I don't listen to it in fact, and that's also why when they ask me to recommend [Italian] pop music I am always a bit, let's say, in trouble because I never know ... I don't listen to pop music, in fact, therefore I never know what to recommend.

So I started learning classical piano, I also did some performances, which we call the "wise". Un saggio è… sapete la parola “assaggiare”? Ein Essay ist... kennen Sie das Wort "Geschmack"? An essay is ... do you know the word "taste"? Well, wise is similar because "wise", or "wise" means some sort of test, a wise man's skill. When one does a school of music, but also a school of dance or other artistic disciplines at the end of the year there is usually an essay, that is, a performance by all the students who must play this in front of the parents of all the students. wise. It was always a very… let's say, moment of nervousness and anxiety for me, because yes, I've always been afraid to perform and also to speak in public and I never liked doing it much, I must say. But yes, I've been doing it for several years. Parallel to my classical piano studies, however, I independently - since my teacher, my teacher didn't help me - developed my side as a keyboard player, which in the end was what I wanted to do from the beginning. So I started learning on my own by searching the internet, watching YouTube videos, tutorials, lessons, [about] how to become a keyboard player - how to develop, how to make these sounds.

There is a whole world that revolves around keyboards, a very interesting world of sound creation, let's say, there are many very interesting aspects and unfortunately keyboard players are always ... they always have a fairly minor role, at least in pop music, they always have quite a minor role. But in reality keyboards are an instrument that has infinite potential, because as I said the keyboard can make any sound. Actually nowadays more and more often… it's not even the keyboards that create the sounds, but the computers to which the keyboards are connected. So you basically play notes on the keyboard but the signal basically goes to a computer with software.

It is the software that actually creates the sounds and this is done because ... well, computers are more powerful, we have computers like Macs, MacBook Pros that are used a lot because they are more powerful than a keyboard can be and for this reason, if you pay attention, you will see that many musicians, many keyboardists use computers to perform live. Computers are everywhere in our world, even in live concerts. So I developed that side there, the keyboard player side and I've also been part of some musical groups of various genres, now I don't know exactly how many, I think four… three or four bands and I've done some concerts.

I have to say, I have not been part of many bands, I have never played a lot, maybe even a little because of my slightly introverted personality and I have not even done so many concerts I think, I don't know exactly, maybe 10 or 15 in mine life in total, I don't know. But I must say that it is very nice to do concerts, it is something that I miss a little, because it was really fun. Doing concerts is certainly better, at least for me, than performing solo, as in the essays I mentioned before, because when you are in a group the pressure is released on everyone, it is divided between everyone and in this way yes, it's a little bit easier, you feel less under pressure, individually speaking, and you have a lot of fun because there's also this "chemistry", this how to say ... I don't even know how to say in Italian, there he has a lot of fun in the group because, in fact, he is in a group and he is doing something very adrenaline, and it is a very very funny thing that I miss a little bit, as I said.

In any case, yes, I've done some concerts, there are also videos. An interesting experience that I had once, and this is not a concert with a group, but actually alone. Once I played in a contest for artists, let's say, emerging, a contest that exists, let's say, in my part, not far from my city, in whose jury - "jury" is practically like "jury" in English, the people who judge the artists and decide who to reward at the end of the evening. The winners will get a prize, money I think, of course. Iin questa giuria c'era Mogol. In dieser Jury saß Mogol. Mogol was in this jury. If you don't know who Mogol is, he is an Italian singer-songwriter, one who wrote many famous songs by famous Italian singers of the 70-80s, who is now an elderly person, and he was part of the jury and judged the performances of the artists. I practically applied to participate in this competition with an instrumental piece of keyboards only, you can imagine that it was something quite particular, out of the ordinary, by the way you can still listen to my music on SoundCloud I send you a link, I leave you maybe a link in the description, if you are interested. And this piece was called “Lithe Fluctuation”, a very strange name as it is normal for a progressive piece, the genre that as I told you, I like it.

And it's a 10 minute piece, so you can understand that 10 minutes is a blunder, a blunder means that absolutely too much for a contest like this, where people doing 3-minute 4-minute pieces. And then the organizer said to me: “Ok, I listened to your piece you sent me, it's really interesting, it's really special, we are very interested, you are very talented you can participate but you have to shorten this piece, because you can't play for 10 minutes if other people play 4 minutes ”. And so what I did was actually shortening this piece from 10 minutes to 4 minutes and playing it in front of hundreds of people, but unfortunately not in front of the master Mughal because he was sick, or perhaps he had had an unexpected event - an "unexpected event" it means an unexpected problem, which cannot be predicted - and it couldn't be there, so Mogol wasn't there. I didn't win, I clearly didn't win, maybe what I did a little too strange, but it was an interesting experience playing in front of so many people and I was certainly a little scared, I can tell you this.

This was my story as a musician, I haven't told you everything but I don't want to talk too much. This is an experiment, let's say, I want to see how many people listen to this episode and how many people listen to it until the end, because I can see the statistics, so if I see what type only 15% of people arrive at the end maybe it means that I should do as I have done so far. If you have come this far, maybe you like what I do and if you like what I do, maybe you can also make a donation, obviously you are not obliged but I would be infinitely grateful.

Thanks again for listening to me and hopefully this time the audio has come out good, because I don't want to talk another 40 minutes. Thanks for listening, and ... ah, let me know what you think, what you thought of this episode, because I really want to know your opinion, otherwise I don't know if it makes sense to do such long episodes, or [I should] go back to a slightly shorter format.
