La Grande Emigrazione: seconda parte. L'argentina

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti, bentornati su Podcast Italiano. Questo è il ventiduesimo episodio di livello avanzato ed è la seconda parte dell'episodio sull'emigrazione italiana. Se nella prima parte di questo episodio abbiamo parlato dell' emigrazione, della grande emigrazione dovrei dire, ovvero della dell'emigrazione che è avvenuta dopo l'Unità d'Italia, l'unificazione d'Italia nel 1861 fino, possiamo dire, alla seconda guerra mondiale – abbiamo parlato di questo e dell'emigrazione nello specifico in Nord America – oggi parleremo invece dell'emigrazione in Sud America o in America Latina. A proposito, noi diciamo soprattutto “Sud America” o “America del sud” e meno di frequente “America Latina”, non diciamo mai “Latino America”, come si dice in spagnolo, quindi questa è una nota linguistica per voi.

Dopo queste correzioni e queste premesse possiamo finalmente entrare nel vivo dell'episodio. “Entrare nel vivo” di qualcosa significa iniziare a parlare, diciamo, degli aspetti più importanti di qualcosa. Partiamo da questo dato, ho trovato questo dato relativo agli immigrati in America Latina, non solamente italiani, ma di tutti gli immigrati, di 11 milioni. Ed è interessante che di questi 11 milioni che sono immigrati in America Latina il 38% di loro erano italiani, il 28% spagnoli e l'11% Portoghesi. Quindi vedete gli italiani hanno davvero ho avuto una grande importanza, una grande influenza proprio numerica in Sud America. E dunque iniziamo parlando dell'Argentina, poi parleremo anche del Brasile e volevo iniziare da 2 citazioni che ho trovato sugli italiani in Argentina. La prima è di uno scrittore poeta e saggista argentino, non lo conoscevo sinceramente, Jorge Luis Borges, che affermò questo – lo dico in spagnolo con l'accento argentino, provo a farlo, mi piace molto l'accento argentino.

“El argentino es un italiano que habla español”

ovvero, probabilmente avete capito, “l'argentino è un italiano che parla spagnolo”. E poi ho trovate quest'altra citazione di uno scrittore, ma messicano questa volta, Octavio Paz:

“Los argentinos son italianos que hablan español y se creen ingleses” Cioè gli argentini sono italiani che parlano spagnolo e si credono inglesi. E questa è un'osservazione abbastanza, secondo me, veritiera, perché l'Argentina è forse il paese fuori dall'Italia che ha una… che ha la maggiore influenza italiana, che ha risentito maggiormente dell'influenza italiana. La cultura Argentina per molti aspetti è davvero italiana, possiamo dire. Ci sono molti italo-argentini famosi: penso che molti di voi abbiano sentito parlare di Lionel Messi, il calciatore probabilmente più forte al mondo. Beh, Messi ha lontane origini italiane, ma ci sono tanti altri personaggi. Io conosco soprattutto i calciatori come Javier Zanetti. “Zanetti” lo pronunciamo in italiano, Cambiasso, Batistuta – sono tutti calciatori che sono stati molto famosi in Italia – ho già citato Camoranesi nell'episodio precedente, che addirittura ha vinto il mondiale con l'Italia. Anche politici come Juan Peron, politico argentino molto famoso che ha… che aveva parenti sardi.

Si stima che circa il 50% della società, quindi probabilmente tra i 20 e i 30 milioni di argentini, abbiano origini italiane. Ora, ho notato che le stime variano, sia per quanto riguarda l'Argentina, sia per quanto riguarda il Brasile, quindi è difficile avere dati certi, però sicuramente sono numeri molto molto grandi. E ho trovato questo dato relativo ai migranti, proprio, che dice che 2,9 milioni tra il 1861 e il 1985 sono andati in Argentina, quindi quasi 3 milioni, di cui sono rimasti 2,2 milioni. A proposito, in italiano noi parliamo di 2 virgola (,) due, non diciamo 2 punto due (2.2) come in inglese. Non sono nelle vostre lingue, ma noi utilizziamo le virgole. Quando invece vogliamo parlare di numeri come 1.000 (mille), 2.000 (duemila), 3.000 (tremila), cioè le migliaia, utilizziamo il punto per scrivere, quindi 1.000 per dire mille e non 1,000, quindi al contrario dell'inglese. Ecco, questo può confondere un po', a me confonde quando leggo numeri in inglese sicuramente, magari a voi confonde quando leggete numeri in italiano, ma non so come si fa in altre lingue, so solo come si fa in inglese ed è l'opposto dell'italiano. Quindi gli argentini sono la seconda comunità di italiani al mondo fuori dall'Italia dopo il Brasile, ma la differenza è che in Brasile hanno un peso minore sulla composizione, possiamo dire, percentuale perché il Brasile ha una varietà maggiore. Gli italiani erano uno dei tanti popoli, in Argentina hanno un peso, hanno avuto un peso maggiore. Tra l'altro, sia in Argentina, sia in Brasile è in vigore lo “ius soli”, la legge del suolo, della terra, possiamo dire, mentre in Italia è in vigore lo Ius sanguinis, la legge di sangue, come abbiamo già detto nello scorso episodio. Quindi ci sono ci sono diverse persone che hanno la doppia cittadinanza brasiliana (o argentina) e italiana e probabilmente anche molti di voi, alcuni di voi che conosco personalmente o con cui ho fatto lezioni, anche se la maggioranza dei discendenti in realtà non ha passaporto italiano, quindi è una è una minoranza, possiamo dire, quella delle persone che hanno ottenuto la cittadinanza italiana. L'altra volta abbiamo visto quanto è stata difficile e travagliata l'emigrazione italiana negli Stati Uniti, le difficoltà nell'assimilazione e nell'integrazione. In Argentina e in Brasile la storia è molto diversa, perché l'integrazione è andata abbastanza bene, non ci sono state stragi e non c'è stato razzismo. Anche probabilmente grazie alla religione comune e alla vicinanza culturale, perché chiaramente l'Argentina il Brasile sono paesi latini, quindi culturalmente più vicini all'Italia di quanto lo fossero gli Stati Uniti. E perché la scelta è ricaduta sull'Argentina? Beh, l'Argentina aveva un grande bisogno, una grande necessità di forza lavoro, anche perché l'Argentina era sottopopolata, nel 1850 viveva circa un milione di persone in Argentina, mentre in Italia nel 1861, pochi anni dopo, vivevano 21 milioni di persone. Quindi in Italia, possiamo dire, c'erano circa 21 volte le persone che vivono in Argentina, e l'Argentina è 9 volte la grandezza dell'Italia, quindi, sì, possiamo dire che l'Argentina era completamente vuota o quasi. Ed è per questo che il governo fece una legge che assegnava gratuitamente o pagabile a rate a prezzi molto convenienti, molto contenuti. Aveva anche sancito un impegno di accoglienza nella sua costituzione, cioè nella costituzione era stato scritto, era stato sancito che gli immigrati dovevano essere… dovevano essere accolti. Leggo cosa dice l'articolo 25 della costituzione, in italiano questa volta. Dice:

Molti andavano nella capitale, Buenos Aires, – un terzo di loro nella capitale – un altro terzo viveva in altri centri urbani, e solamente un terzo andava nelle zone rurali. Quindi tanti andavano nella Buenos Aires, e soprattutto tanti Genovesi, oltre che piemontesi tanti genovesi. Se i veneti sono soprattutto andati in Brasile, i Genovesi sono soprattutto andati in Argentina, a Buenos Aires. Gli italiani in realtà non sono andati solamente a Buenos Aires, sono andati fino alla Terra del Fuoco, quindi la zona più meridionale della Argentina, anche del mondo. Nella città di Ushuaia, che è la città più meridionale, quindi più a sud di tutto il mondo, c'è una una grande presenza di lavoratori italiani. Ma gli italiani sono anche, come abbiamo detto, in altre regioni, come Santa Fe, Entre Rios, Cordova, La Pampa, Tucuman Santiago del Est, Corriente, e anche in Uruguay, ma non abbiamo tempo di parlare anche dell'Uruguay, perché se no dovremmo fare 25 parti.

Vi faccio un esempio molto facile. Se in Spagna per dire “ma che stai facendo? !” dicono “Pero que estas haciendo? !” (con accento spagnolo), in Argentina direbbero qualcosa come “Pero que estas haciendo? !” (con accento argentino). Oppure una frase come “ma non lo so, non ne ho idea” in argentino è qualcosa come “pero que se yo, yo no tengo ni idea!” (con accento argentino). Sentite, l'intonazione abbastanza simile, mentre in spagnolo sarebbe “pero yo que sé, no tengo ni idea”. Effettivamente sembra molto più italiano, sembra molto più simile alle intonazioni che abbiamo qui in Italia. “Yo soy argentino, yo vivo en Buenos Aires”, vivo in Argentina, vivo a Buenos Aires, come sentite è un'intonazione che ricorda un po', le melodie, la musicalità dell'italiano, molto di più di quanto sicuramente lo possa ricordare lo spagnolo iberico, lo spagnolo, non so, messicano o colombiano o di altri paesi.

C'è anche poi il caso del lunfardo, che è una sorta di gergo, di creolo, parlato nelle zone di Buenos Aires, Rosario e Montevideo in Uruguay. La parola lunfardo deriva effettivamente da Lombardo, ed era una sorta di lingua… non era una vera e propria lingua, era uno spagnolo con qualche parola proveniente dall'italiano, dal… ma anche, dal francese, dall'inglese, dall'occitano, ed è una lingua carceraria, una lingua parlata dalla classe medio-bassa, utilizzata per non farsi capire, no? Per parlare in una maniera incomprensibile agli altri. E alcune parole sono rimaste ancora oggi, ho trovato una lista di parole tra le quali ho riconosciuto alcune espressioni che effettivamente sono comuni in italiano, per esempio l'espressione “a la romana”, che significava “per parti uguali”. Noi diciamo ancora ad oggi in italiano “pagare alla romana”, che significa, non calcoliamo quello che abbiamo pagato tutti, magari qualcuno ha preso il caffè, dessert, ma ok, “facciamo alla romana”, quindi dividiamo in parti uguali. A quanto pare si diceva, non so se si dice ancora, ditemelo voi, argentini che mi ascoltate.

E ora sentiamo le testimonianze che vi ho preannunciato, testimonianze da vari paesi, e ne sentiremo altro nell'episodio successivo a questo.

Iniziamo con Valeria, che è Argentina e ci racconta la storia della sua famiglia.

[Valeria] Ciao Davide, sono Valeria, ti racconto la storia dei miei antenati. I miei nonno erano della Calabria, Cosenza. Mia nonna di Vaccarizzo di Montalto Uffugo e mio nonno di San Benedetto Ullano. Sono venuti qua Buenos Aires nel 1950, a marzo, prima mio nonno con i suoi fratelli e i suoi genitori e qualche mese dopo mia nonna con mia zia che a quel momento aveva un anno. Mia nonna ha lasciato tutta la sua famiglia in (a) Cosenza, ma non hanno mai smesso di parlare, prima per lettere ogni mese e poi per telefono la domenica di ogni settimana. Mia nonna era molto legata a loro e parlava sempre della sua infanzia, del suo paese. Appena arrivati qua i primi dieci anni hanno dovuto vivere prima (loro) tre, i miei nonni e mia zia, e poi anche mio papà in una piccola stanza in una casa. Poi con un prestito chiesto alla mia famiglia di nonno hanno potuto comprare una bellissima casa con terrazza nel quartiere di Flores, dove mi ricordo che mio nonno aveva molte piante e una vite enorme che dava uva verde. Mio nonno comincia lavorando (a lavorare) in una (fabbrica) metallurgica facendo porte e finestre, poi chiude e va a lavorare come consegna di giornali la mattina, e il pomeriggio fino alla notte come maestro* nell'università di Buenos Aires, dove io mi sono laureata come psicologa. Mia nonna invece ha lavorato come modista per molti anni, con Roberto Piazza che era il più famoso disegnatore di moda in Argentina. In (nella) casa dei miei nonni l'Italia era viva, mio nonno parlava sempre in dialetto, i numeri si contavano sempre in italiano e mia nonna faceva pasta fatta in casa e mia sorella ed io ballavamo sempre la tarantella. Quest'anno ho potuto visitare la famiglia di mia nonna in (a) Cosenza ed è stata un'esperienza incredibile. Tutti mi parlavano di loro, mi hanno fatto vedere le mie innumerevoli lettere inviate tra loro e… era viva nel suo discorso. Non l'hanno dimenticata mai. Quando sono arrivata in Italia dal primo giorno mi sono sentita a casa, a volte più a casa che a Buenos Aires. Bene, grazie per il tuo lavoro, ascoltare il podcast aiuta moltissimo, spero che la storia della mia famiglia sia utile. Ti saluto, ciao!

Grazie davvero per la bellissima storia, Valeria. E dopo l'Argentina torniamo agli Stati Uniti, di cui abbiamo parlato la scorsa volta. Sentiamo la testimonianza di Micheal che ha origini abruzzesi e, devo dire, anche un fantastico accento abbruzzese che di solito non ci aspetteremmo da un americano, da uno statunitense. E sentiamo perché ha un accento abruzzese, sentiamo com'è un accento abruzzese se non lo conoscevate.

[Micheal] Mi chiamo Michele. [La] mia famiglia è di origine Abruzzese, [viene] da due piccoli comuni nella provincia di Chieti. Mia madre venne in America da bambina e è cresciuta a New York in un quartiere dove abitavano molti emigrati abruzzesi, per la maggior parte dalla nostra provincia m. Mio padre visse a Roma dall'età di 5 a 17 anni, dove completò il liceo classico prima di emigrare nel 1937. Si stabilì nello stesso quartiere in cui viveva mia madre, ed era (fu) lì che alla fine si incontrarono dopo e si sposarono. Mio nonno paternale (corretto: paterno) era originalmente emigrato in America e nel 1920 perché era tornato dalla prima guerra mondiale per scoprire di aver perso tutto. Mia nonna era incinta con (di) mio padre il lavoro non si trovava lui faceva da falegname ed ebanista e a quel tempo c'era molto lavoro in America per gli artigiani, particolarmente nella costruzione (nell'edilizia). Dopo 5 anni lui aveva messo a (da) parte abbastanza per tornare in Italia e comprare un'azienda a Roma. Con l'avvento della grande depressione però perse di nuovo tutto e dovete tornare in America per cercare di guadagnare abbastanza soldi per sostenere la famiglia Roma. Come tanti emigrati lui sognava di tornare in Italia e ristabilirsi lì. Dopo 5 anni era diventato ovvio che non esisteva una buona strada avanti (io direi: non esistevano alternative) e mia nonna e mio padre si unirono a lui in America. Sempre pensavano che questa situazione sarebbe stata temporanea, ma mentre alcuni membri della mia famiglia tornano (meglio: sono tornati) in Italia per (le) vacanze mia nonna non mai più visto l'Italia nella sua vita. I sentimenti anti-italiani erano molto forti in America quel tempo che (meglio: quando) mio padre emigrò, negli anni precedenti la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Mentre gli Stati Uniti non erano ancora entrati alla (in) guerra i sentimenti erano molto forti contro le “axis powers” (potenze dell'asse), ma il quartiere in cui loro abitavano era un “Little Italy”. Molti degli (dei) negozi erano italiani: i professionisti come medici, farmacisti, avvocati, ecc. o erano italiani o almeno parlavamo e capivano italiano per servire la comunità. C'erano degli (dei) giornali italiani e c'era una vita sociale molto vibrante per gli italiani. Io sono nato 15 anni dopo l'emigrazione di mio padre. Non abbiamo mai perso (la) nostra identità come (di) italiani, Eravamo circondati da (di) parenti e paesani e anche molto altri emigrati dalle altre regione meridionali, come la Puglia, Campania, Molise, Sicilia, ecc. Parlavamo un mix di italiano semplice, siccome molti dei nostri vicini non erano istruiti, dialetto con parole inglesi. Quella lingua, come un “creole” (creolo) italo-americano è la mia madrelingua. Adesso penso che nessuno lo parla (parli) più. Oltre alle feste degli (Dei) santi come Santa Rita, San Gennaro, Sant'Antonio, celebrate nelle varie parrocchie che si rivolgono alla comunità italiana nella zona, una delle altre pratiche che era molto comune tra gli immigrati italiani e i loro discendenti è quella di produrre vino a casa. Anche ora (ancora ora) se guidi in giro per (il) mio comune a New Jersey all'inizio di ottobre troverai pile di casse d'uva vuote e l'atmosfera è permeata dal profumo del nuovo vino in fermentazione. Può essere sciocco ma è uno delle cose che riafferma la nostra identità come italoamericani.

E ora sentiamo la storia di Frank, anche lui americano e anche lui, casualmente, di origini abruzzesi. Sentiamo la sua storia.

Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Frank Facciolo. Innanzitutto devo dire che è un onore essere qui su Podcast Italiano, cioè il mio podcast preferito per imparare la lingua italiana. E dunque sono americano, ma come potete capire del mio cognome, Facciolo, sono di origine italiana. La mia famiglia proviene da due regioni in Italia, Calabria che è la regione (da) dove proviene la parte Facciolo e l'altra è (l')Abruzzo, da dove proviene la parte Di Amore. Purtroppo sono immigrati qui negli Stati Uniti 100 anni oppure più di 100 anni fa, quindi mi mancano tanti dettagli sul loro viaggio, com'è andato (andata) nei primi anni. La formazione della mia famiglia è un po' un mistero. L'unica cosa che so è mia nonna Di Amore è (stata) l'ultima persona della mia famiglia ad arrivare qui a Filadelfia nel 1928 quando aveva 15 anni o qualcosa del genere. Quello che vi posso raccontare è che sono venuti qui per avere la possibilità, cioè, più possibilità di avere successo, cioè un pezzo del sogno americano, e perciò hanno deciso di lasciare la parte della lingua italiana in Italia. Dico spesso che questa è la parte più triste della storia della mia famiglia, che ovviamente ho deciso di imparare lingua italiana perché sono di origine italiana e l'Italia (la) tengo nel mio cuore da sempre (io direi: ho l'Italia nel cuore da sempre) e voglio condividere questa esperienza questo percorso con la mia famiglia, ma purtroppo non posso e mi lamento ai (con i) miei genitori ma come si è possibile, come si è possibile (corretto: com'è possibile) crescere in una casa italiana senza la lingua italiana. Mio padre risponde sempre così, che sono venuti qui per avere successo e per aumentare la possibilità la cosa migliore da fare è assimilarsi nel popolo, ed è questo che hanno fatto, hanno cercato di essere veri americani, così che le altre generazioni (meglio: le generazioni successive) potrebbero (meglio: avrebbero potuto / potessero) avere più successo. Sono (vengo) da una famiglia che sa cosa significa lavorare duro, miei nonni erano proprietari degli edifici con gli appartamenti (corretto: condomini), mio nonno ha comprato un bar in cui (si) è specializzato a cucinare la pizza in un modo speciali, che era così famoso nella zona che anche molti anni dopo mio padre ha ricevuto un'offerta di comprare (da qualcuno che voleva comprare) il nome per vendere la vera pizza Facciolo, che in realtà non so esattamente che cos'è (che cosa sia) una vera pizza Facciolo, ma da quello che so che è una pizza un po' bruciata sotto o qualcosa del genere, quindi niente di che, ma immagino fosse buona. Ma questa etichetta di lavoro (etica lavorativa) è stato tramontato (tramandata) a tutta la famiglia, che ora è piena di imprenditori, dottori e avvocati. L'unica cosa che volevo dire è che lasciare la lingua non significa abbandonare le tradizioni o non frequentare altri migranti italiani. Anzi, ho detto prima che mia nonna è finita qui a Filadelfia e non è per caso, sono venuti qui in questa città perché ci sono un sacco di abruzzesi. Questo l'ho imparato (meglio: scoperto) solo negli ultimi anni che ho letto che fuori d'Italia (dall'Italia) è la città con più abruzzesi nel mondo. Infatti c'è un ristorante qui che si chiama il Gran Caffè L'Aquila, che proviene d'Abruzzo (dall'Abruzzo) e la storia di questo ristorante è che dopo il grande terremoto in Abruzzo hanno deciso di ricostruire il ristorante qui in America e hanno fatto un toro (? ), un giro per trovare la città giusta, e dicono che sono arrivati… quando sono arrivati qui a Filadelfia hanno sentito di letto (?) abruzzese nelle strade, ed è per questo che hanno scelto questa città. E dicono che la goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso (nota di Davide: in realtà non si usa così quest'espressione, devo dire la verità :D) è che a Filadelfia la cosa più importante per noi (sono) gli Eagles, cioè la squadra di football americano qui nella città, e siccome sono dell'Aquila possiamo dire che era un destino (era destino). E questo è tutto (quello) che avevo da dire grazie per aver sfruttato il mio sproloquio, che… sproloquio una parola che ho imparato dal podcast, su Podcast Italiano, quindi grazie a Davide per la parola e anche per tutto quello che fai per noi. Ciao.

Ok, ora basta Abruzzo e basta anche Stati Uniti. Vorrei farvi sentire farvi una storia proveniente dall'Australia adesso, in realtà io ho due storie proveniente dall'Australia, da parte di due miei studenti e oggi ve ne farò sentire solamente una, la prossima la sentiremo la prossima volta. Quindi Justin dovrai aspettare il prossimo episodio, la prossima parte, oggi sentiremo invece la storia di Filomena. E in realtà la sua storia non ha a che vedere con la Grande Emigrazione, perché i suoi genitori sono migrati… emigrati dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, nel secondo dopoguerra, quindi non si tratta di “Grande Emigrazione”, ma comunque può essere interessante. Ed è una storia un pochino diversa dalle altre perché i suoi genitori non sono emigrati per necessità, per povertà, ma per lusso quasi, per sfizio, non so come dire, per fare un avventura. Ma adesso ce lo spiega lei.

[Filomena] La mia famiglia viene da San Giorgio La Molara, provincia di Benevento in Campania, circa un'ora di distanza da Napoli. Mio padre è partito per l'Australia nel 1961 e mia madre è venuta un anno dopo. Entrambi sono venuti senza nessuna assistenza dal governo australiano. Mio padre ha deciso di venire per un'avventura, perché a quel tempo c'erano tantissimi paesani, parenti sangiorgesi che si trovavano qui da molto tempo. L'integrazione non è andata bene, gli italiani durante gli anni cinquanta e sessanta erano trattati talmente male, venivano chiamati “dego”, “greasy wog” e altri nomi sgradevoli, ed è per questo motivo (che) i miei la compagnia di paesani e hanno creato una comunità, non direi per separarsi dalle persone anglosassoni ma per non sentire le persone sparlare di loro. La storia dei miei genitori è molto particolare, mio padre non aveva bisogno di andarsene, suo padre aveva una fattoria, coltivavano le olive, facevano il vino, avevano anche le persone che lavoravano a giornata. Direi che era erano autosufficienti, nel senso che anche se le condizioni erano pessime per i contadini meridionali potevano andare avanti. Soltanto dopo un soggiorno in Italia mi sono resa conto che mio padre voleva cavarsela da solo in un nuovo paese. Un fatto molto interessante è che nel paese dove abito io, Adelaide, ci sono 4000 sangiorgesi e ce ne sono altrettanti in nord e sud America. Sai quanti abitanti ci sono a San Giorgio? 3000. E se tutti quelli che vivono all'estero dovessero tornare in paese non ci sarà posto, tanto per dire.
