I castelli, 1. A cosa servivano i castelli

1. A cosa servivano i castelli

I castelli erano molto diversi uno dall'altro.

Castles were places where the lords lived with their families. They were built to keep enemies away and to keep people, horses and treasures safe.

Horses were very important because the weapons could not go so far and quickly without them.

Medioevo is the name given following a period in the history of Europe. The things that have happened or come from the Middle Ages, are called "medieval". Jahrhundert. The Middle Ages began around the 11th century and ended around the 16th century. Thus medieval castles took about 500 years to develop and change.

I castelli erano molto diversi uno dall'altro. Die Schlösser waren sehr unterschiedlich. The castles were very different from one another. The first stone castles had only a square tower in the center; the castles that came later were composed of many buildings. There have been castles everywhere for a long time, but the period in which they were built most was the Middle Ages.

Castles were built by kings, princes, lords and landowners, but those who actually built them were more or less skilled workers. The most skilled workers included carvers, called masons; the less able took care of pushing, pulling and lifting. Do najbardziej wykwalifikowanych robotników zaliczali się rzeźbiarze, zwani murarzami; mniej wprawni zajmowali się pchaniem, ciągnięciem i podnoszeniem.

The castles were built in those areas where the earth needed to be protected from enemies. Once decided where to build a castle, the best place was chosen. The castles needed water supply, a good view of the surrounding land and the greatest natural protection possible. Castles were often built on hills for defense.

A moat has also been added to some castles, which was a wide and deep ditch full of water, located around the castle. Do niektórych zamków dobudowano także fosę, czyli szeroką i głęboką jamę wypełnioną wodą, rozlokowaną wokół zamku. People could only enter through a well-protected bridge, called the "drawbridge"; in case of danger this bridge was lifted by heavy chains fixed to the walls. Once the bridge was closed it turned into a huge closed door; this made it very difficult to cross the ditch. A ditch was dug to keep away unwelcome visitors and when armies attacked, thanks to the moat, it was difficult to pass under the castle walls.
