#80 – Siracusa, il cuore antico dell'Europa

Ti faccio una domanda semplice. Dove batte il cuore dell'Europa?

Forse è semplice solo in apparenza. Ma proviamo a rispondere.

Se la vediamo dal punto di vista geografico, forse diremo la Francia o la Germania. Perché si trovano proprio al centro del continente.

Se guardiamo alle istituzioni dell'odierna Europa unita, forse diremmo il Belgio e Bruxelles, perché è lì che si prendono le grandi decisioni che riguardano tutti gli europei.

Se guardiamo la cultura o la storia, è chiaro che ogni popolo d'Europa tirerà l'acqua al proprio mulino.

Gli spagnoli diranno: siamo noi il centro dell'Europa. E faranno lo stesso i francesi, i tedeschi, i britannici forse, e naturalmente gli italiani.

Se però guardiamo a un tempo lontanissimo, prima ancora che nascesse il concetto di Europa, forse il centro della civiltà europea era molto a sud.

Certo, l'Europa geograficamente non è cambiata nel tempo. È cambiato però il cuore di quello che riteniamo europeo. Se sono europei i valori della democrazia e della libertà, se è europea la cultura classica che fonde esperienze greche e latine, se è europeo il nostro rapporto con il mar mediterraneo, allora ho una risposta alternativa.

Il cuore dell'Europa batte in Sicilia.

In una città del profondo sud, lontanissima da Berlino, Parigi, Bruxelles o Londra. E anche abbastanza lontana da Roma.

Eppure, ha dato un contributo fondamentale a creare la cultura con cui poi sono cresciuti tutti i popoli d'Europa.

È la città di cui ti parlerò oggi.

Preparati a un viaggio tra storia e tradizione. Andiamo a Siracusa.

Siracusa è una delle città più grandi della Sicilia ancora ai giorni nostri. È la quarta città più popolosa dell'isola ed è anche il centro più importante di tutta la Sicilia sud-orientale, dal punto di vista turistico, ma anche produttivo e finanziario.

Eppure, bisogna essere sinceri, gli anni d'oro di Siracusa appartengono sicuramente al passato.

In particolare, al passato molto molto remoto.

La sua fondazione risale al 733 avanti Cristo. Precisamente vent'anni dopo Roma.

A posare la prima pietra della città furono coloni greci, arrivati in Sicilia dalla polis di Corinto. In quel periodo, dalla Grecia partivano in continuazione flotte di navi pronte a creare colonie dall'altra parte del mare mediterraneo. Non a caso, per molte località dell'Italia meridionale, si parlava come della Magna Grecia. La grande Grecia colonizzata a partire dalla madrepatria.

In questo contesto, Siracusa fiorì come una delle città greche più importanti in Sicilia. Divenne prestigiosa, al punto che passarono da lì anche personaggi famosissimi della cultura classica come il drammaturgo Eschilo, il filosofo Platone o il poeta Pindaro.

Il prestigio culturale però non viene mai da solo. Siracusa infatti era anche una città politicamente molto potente. Combatté contro le altre città greche in Sicilia, ma non solo.

Partecipò anche alla più grande guerra che divise la Grecia classica. Il conflitto tra Atene e Sparta, noto come la guerra del Peloponneso.

I siracusani combatterono a fianco di Sparta, resistettero a un attacco navale da parte di Atene e alla fine ebbero ragione. Da quel momento, Siracusa divenne la città egemone di tutta la Sicilia.

Finché non successe quello che successe a tutte le città italiane di quel periodo storico. Arrivarono i romani. Siracusa resistette con orgoglio, ma alla fine dovette cedere ai suoi nuovi padroni.

La storia di indipendenza e autonomia di Siracusa finisce qui praticamente per sempre. La città nei secoli successivi resterà prestigiosa e ricca, ma il potere politico sarà sempre altrove. Tranne che per alcuni momenti molto brevi in alcune fasi politiche.

Federico II di Svevia, imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero e Re di Sicilia nel XIII secolo, la definì “città fedelissima”. E poi, nei secoli successivi, durante il dominio spagnolo, la chiamarono “la Saragozza di Sicilia”, sia per motivi architettonici che per dimostrare il legame intenso con la dinastia in Spagna. A dimostrazione che i bollenti spiriti dell'indipendenza erano passati.

Per la verità, durante il dominio spagnolo, Siracusa visse alti e bassi. I bassi furono dovuti in particolare alle catastrofi naturali, due spaventosi terremoti che misero in ginocchio la città. Gli alti invece arrivarono dall'arte, e in particolare dalla visita a Siracusa di uno dei più prestigiosi artisti di tutti i tempi: Michelangelo Merisi meglio noto come Caravaggio.

Caravaggio è stato uno dei più grandi esponenti del barocco, ma anche un uomo impulsivo e vulcanico. Il suo arrivo a Siracusa è dovuto infatti più al suo carattere che alla sua arte. Il pittore infatti da molti anni era in fuga. Era scappato da Roma dove lo avevano accusato di omicidio e dove era stato condannato a morte per impiccagione. Da lì era finito prima a Napoli, poi a Malta e infine in Sicilia, proprio a Siracusa.

In Sicilia, Caravaggio era a tutti gli effetti un evaso, ovvero una persona scappata di prigione. I Cavalieri di Malta lo avevano arrestato per una rissa e poi avevano anche scoperto la sua condanna per omicidio. Ai siracusani però questo non importava tanto, o forse non lo sapevano o forse ancora credevano che fosse una delle tante leggende sul pittore tanto geniale quanto fumantino. E Caravaggio ringraziò i siracusani regalando loro uno splendido quadro che ancora oggi si trova dietro l'altare della Chiesa di Santa Lucia e che si chiama proprio il Seppellimento di Santa Lucia.

Ma torniamo alla storia.

Quella di Siracusa divenne con il tempo molto simile alla storia del resto della Sicilia. In particolare, i siracusani masticarono amaro come i loro conterranei quando, dopo l'avventura di Napoleone, la dinastia Borbone fondò il Regno delle due Sicilie, unendo il Regno di Napoli a quello di Sicilia e togliendo ai siciliani secoli di autonomia.

Quell'esperienza però durò poco, perché poi arrivò Garibaldi nel 1860 a portare la Sicilia nel regno d'Italia.

E il resto della storia di Siracusa da quel momento è la storia d'Italia, come la conosciamo fino a oggi.

Come detto, buona parte dell'eredità storica e archeologica di Siracusa deriva dal suo passato come città greca. I resti di quella civiltà sono ancora ben presenti, in centro ma soprattutto nella zona archeologica poco fuori dalla città odierna. Il simbolo più evidente è il maestoso teatro greco di Siracusa, scavato nella roccia e dove ancora oggi -ogni anno- è possibile assistere alle tragedie e commedie degli autori del teatro greco classico, nello stesso posto in cui anche i greci le guardavano 2500 anni fa. È un'esperienza veramente unica. Ve la consiglio di tutto cuore.

Nella stessa area, si trovano anche un anfiteatro romano e una curiosa struttura chiamata l'orecchio di Dionisio. Si tratta di un'enorme grotta artificiale che, secondo la leggenda, serviva a Dionisio, uno dei dittatori dell'antica Siracusa, come prigione per i suoi nemici politici. In realtà gli archeologi non sono convinti di questa versione. È più probabile che sia semplicemente una cava da cui per tanto tempo i siracusani hanno estratto pietra per le costruzioni, o forse un amplificatore naturale per l'acustica del teatro. Comunque sia, camminarci dentro fa una certa impressione.

In centro città, vale la pena fermarsi a visitare la meravigliosa chiesa di Santa Lucia, che contiene anche il quadro di Caravaggio di cui parlavamo prima, e soprattutto il fiore all'occhiello di Siracusa. L'isola di Ortigia.

Se guardate Siracusa da una mappa, infatti, potete notare che la città è quasi tutta sulla terraferma, ma ha anche una parte formata da un'isoletta separata dal resto. È l'isola di Ortigia. Un posto bellissimo con un panorama mozzafiato sul mare e una leggenda molto antica. Ve la racconto.

All'interno di Ortigia c'è un laghetto. Si chiama “la fonte di Aretusa”. Aretusa era una delle ninfe, le vergini che servivano la dea greca della caccia, Artemide. In un giorno molto caldo, Aretusa decise di fare un bagno nel fiume Alfeo per rinfrescarsi. Quello però non era un fiume come tutti gli altri, ma un dio-fiume che, alla vista della bellissima Aretusa, prese le sembianze di un uomo per corteggiarla e ottenere il suo amore. Aretusa non fu contenta di queste attenzioni, era una serva di Artemide e quindi uno dei suoi valori principali era la purezza. Aretusa dunque scappò da Alfeo e chiese aiuto alla sua padrona, Artemide. La quale, per proteggerla, trasformò Aretusa in una fonte d'acqua dolce molto lontana da Alfeo, proprio nella città di Siracusa. Alfeo, disperato per avere perso il suo amore, chiese aiuto a Zeus e lo ottenne. Il padre dell'Olimpo permise ad Alfeo di trasformarsi per sempre in fiume, e in particolare di un fiume che sarebbe arrivato fino alla fonte di Aretusa. Per starle vicina per sempre. Non è una storia molto romantica. Anzi, con la consapevolezza di oggi sembra un caso di amore tossico. I miti greci non sono sempre morali e saggi, ma sono sempre molto affascinanti.

Dopo avere visitato Siracusa e Ortigia, è chiaro che a un certo punto arriva il momento di mangiare. Se avete fretta e volete camminare, la prima scelta è sicuramente “la scaccia”. È un prodotto che esiste un po' in tutta la Sicilia in varie forme, consiste in una focaccia cotta al forno con vari ripieni. Di verdure, di carne, di formaggio, e così via.

Se invece preferite sedervi a tavola come si deve, l'ideale è un primo piatto a base di pesce. Molto popolare da queste parti è quella che i siracusani chiamano la pasta fritta. Cioè, un piatto di spaghetti cotti in acqua e poi saltati in padella con acciughe, olio e pan grattato tostato. Molto semplice, ma anche profumato e gustoso.

Oppure, le polpette di “mucco”, cioè di pesciolini piccolissimi e pescati quando sono ancora neonati. Da un po' di tempo, ci sono molte limitazioni alla pesca del mucco e quindi è possibile trovare le polpette autentiche soltanto in alcuni locali autorizzati. E per chi non mangia carne o pesce, la cucina siciliana offre sempre delle alternative grazie alle verdure che crescono copiose sull'isola.

In particolare con la caponata, che a Siracusa chiamano anche la ghiotta, un piatto a base di peperoni, melanzane, patate, pomodori e altre verdure saltate insieme in padella.

E da bere?

Beh, vi dico solo che la città di Avola si trova a pochi chilometri da Siracusa. E quindi è obbligatorio provare un bicchiere del vino locale, il Nero d'Avola, un rosso dal colore intensissimo e dal sapore molto marcato. E per chi preferisce il bianco? Inzolia, Malvasia, Grillo e chi più ne ha più ne metta!

Come da tradizione degli episodi sulle città di Salvatore racconta, spendiamo qualche parola sul calcio in città. Il Siracusa Calcio esiste dal 1924, anche se negli ultimi tempi ha avuto una storia un po' travagliata, con tanti fallimenti e altrettante rinascite. A differenza di altre squadre siciliane come il Palermo, il Catania o il Messina, il Siracusa non ha mai partecipato al campionato di serie A. Oggi cerca stabilità tra la serie D e il campionato di Eccellenza, ovvero il quarto e il quinto livello del calcio italiano. Tuttavia, i suoi tifosi sono sempre molto caldi e orgogliosi. Sostengono sempre la squadra quando gioca nello stadio cittadino, in particolare quando il Siracusa ospita le squadre rivali.

Cos'altro consigliarvi di Siracusa?

Vi ho detto tutto quello che secondo me c'è da fare e da vedere in città, almeno per quanto riguarda le cose più importanti.

Quello che posso aggiungere è un consiglio sull'atteggiamento.

Siracusa è una città orgogliosa, fiera della sua storia e della sua identità. Non è altezzosa, però. Anzi, è accogliente.

A patto che le riconosciate il suo valore e la sua storia. A chi le mostra rispetto, Siracusa offre tutta la sua bellezza e la sua cortesia.

È probabile che una visita in questa città sia solo una tappa di passaggio di un viaggio più lungo in Sicilia. È normale, è sensato, ma non ditelo ad alta voce.

Siracusa ama sentirsi speciale. E in effetti lo è davvero.
