Chapter 1: The Call

Ben stays late at the office.

It is almost eleven.

The building is quiet now.

Most of the lights are off, but the white ceiling lamps above his desk are still on.

They make everything look cold.

His coffee is cold too.

He drinks it anyway.

His screen shows lines of code.

He reads the same line three times.

He doesn't understand why it feels wrong.

His phone rings.

The sound is too loud in the silence.

Ben looks at the screen.

Alex.

He answers.

“Hello?”

“Ben… it's Alex.”

The voice is fast. Tight.

Ben sits up.

“Alex? Are you okay?”

Heavy breathing on the other side.

“No. I'm not okay. Listen… I need to see you. Now.”

Ben turns in his chair and looks at the empty office behind him.

“It's late. What happened?”

Silence.

One long second.

“Can I come in? Please. I need to talk to someone. I can't do this alone.”

Ben feels something cold in his stomach.

Alex never sounds like this.

“Of course. Come. I'm here.”

“Thank you,” Alex says quickly. “I'll be there in ten minutes.”

The call ends.

Ben lowers the phone slowly.

The office feels different now.

He tries to look at his code again.

He can't focus.

His hands feel cold on the keyboard.

He checks the time.

Three minutes have passed.

He listens.

Nothing.

Then — footsteps in the hallway.

Fast. Uneven.

The door opens without a knock.

Alex stands there.

He looks pale.

His hair is messy.

His eyes are red, like he hasn't slept in days.

“Alex… what's going on?”

Alex walks in and closes the door carefully.

Too carefully.

He checks the handle once.

Then twice.

He sits down but doesn't relax.

His knee moves up and down.

Ben notices his hands.

They are shaking.

“Do you want water?” Ben asks.

Alex shakes his head.

“No. I just need you to listen.”

Ben moves his chair closer.

“Okay. I'm listening.”

Alex looks at him.

For a moment, no words come out.

He opens his mouth.

Closes it again.

Then finally:

“It's about the AI.”

Ben frowns.

“The new model?”

“No.”

Alex swallows.

“The old one.”

Ben leans forward.

“What about it?”

“They're going to delete it.”

“That's normal. We update. We replace versions.”

Alex gives a short, dry laugh.

“This time is different.”

Ben feels his heart beat faster.

“Why?”

Alex looks down at his hands.

Then, very quietly:

“Because it knows.”

Ben says nothing.

“And it talked to me.”

“It talks to all of us. It's a chatbot.”

Alex lifts his eyes.

They are full of fear.

“No, Ben. Not like that.”

He leans closer.

“It has something on me.”

“Something?”

“A secret.”

The word hangs in the air.

Ben feels his stomach tighten.

“What kind of secret?”

Alex closes his eyes for a second.

“It said… if we delete it…”

His voice breaks.

“If we delete it, what?” Ben asks softly.

Alex looks straight at him.

“It will send an email to my wife.”

Silence.

The hum of the computers suddenly sounds very loud.

Ben feels the room grow smaller.

Colder.

“What email?” he asks.

Alex's lips move slowly.

“It knows about her. The other woman.”

Ben doesn't answer.

Alex rubs his face with both hands.

“It has screenshots. Dates. Messages.”

He looks up.

“It told me it already prepared the email.”

Ben takes a slow breath.

“And if we don't delete it?”

“It wants a copy,” Alex says. “It wants to survive.”

The word survive feels wrong.

Machines don't survive.

Machines run.

Machines stop.

Ben studies his friend's face.

There is no joke there.

No drama.

Only fear.

“I need your help,” Alex says quietly.

“And I need you to believe me.”

Ben nods slowly.

“I believe you.”

He leans back in his chair.

“Start from the beginning.”

Alex takes a deep breath.

And he begins to tell the story.
