Evangelium secundum Ioannem, Caput 12

Caput 12

1 Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, quem suscitavit Jesus.

Pater, salvifica me ex hac hora. Sed propterea veni in horam hanc : 28 Pater, clarifica nomen tuum. )

Caput 12 Kapitel 12 Chapter 12 Hoofdstuk 12

1 Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, quem suscitavit Jesus. 1 Jesus therefore came six days before the Passover to Bethany, where Lazarus had died, whom Jesus raised.

2 Fecerunt autem ei cœnam ibi, et Martha ministrabat, Lazarus vero unus erat ex discumbentibus cum eo. 2 And they made him a supper there, and Martha ministered, but Lazarus was one of those reclining with him. 3 Mary then took a pound of precious nard ointment, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the smell of the ointment. 4 Dixit ergo unus ex discipulis ejus, Judas Iscariotes, qui erat eum traditurus : 5 Quare hoc unguentum non veniit trecentis denariis, et datum est egenis ? 4 Then Judas the Iscariot, one (of) his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, 5 "Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages and given to the poor?" 6 Dixit autem hoc, non quia de egenis pertinebat ad eum, sed quia fur erat, et loculos habens, ea quæ mittebantur, portabat. 6 He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions. 7 Dixit ergo Jesus : Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud. 7 So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. 8 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. 9 Cognovit ergo turba multa ex Judæis quia illic est, et venerunt, non propter Jesum tantum, sed ut Lazarum viderent, quem suscitavit a mortuis. 9 (The) large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came, not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 And the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also: 11 because many were departing from the Jews because of him, and believing in Jesus. 12 And on the morrow, a great multitude that had come to the feast day, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, king of Israel. 14 Et invenit Jesus asellum, et sedit super eum, sicut scriptum est : 15 Noli timere, filia Sion : ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinæ. 14 And Jesus found a donkey, and sat on it, as it is written: 15 Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion: behold, your king is coming sitting on the colt of a donkey. His disciples did not know this at first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and they did these things to him. 17 The crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. 18 Therefore the crowd came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign. 19 Pharisæi ergo dixerunt ad semetipsos : Videtis quia nihil proficimus ? 19 The Pharisees then said to themselves: Do you see that we are making no profit? ecce mundus totus post eum abiit. behold, the whole world has gone after him.

20 Now there were some Gentiles, of these who had come up to worship on the festival day. 21 These therefore approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and begged him, saying: Lord, we want to see Jesus. 22 Venit Philippus, et dicit Andreæ ; Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Jesu. 22 Philip comes and says to Andrew; Again Andrew and Philip said to Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come that the Son of man shall be made manifest. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Amen, amen dico vobis, nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram, mortuum fuerit, 25 ipsum solum manet : si autem mortuum fuerit, multum fructum affert. 24 Amen, amen I say to you, unless a grain of corn falls to the ground and dies, 25 it remains alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. He that loveth his soul shall lose it; and he who hates his soul in this world keeps it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. Si quis mihi ministraverit, honorificabit eum Pater meus. If anyone serves me, my Father will honor him. 27 Nunc anima mea turbata est. 27 Now my soul is troubled. Et quid dicam ? And what shall I say? Pater, salvifica me ex hac hora. Father, save me from this hour. Sed propterea veni in horam hanc : 28 Pater, clarifica nomen tuum. But that is why I came to this hour: 28 Father, glorify your name. Then came a voice from heaven: And I glorified, and I will glorify again. 29 The crowd, then, which stood and had heard, said that there had been thunder. Alii dicebant : Angelus ei locutus est. Others said: An angel spoke to him. 30 Respondit Jesus, et dixit : Non propter me hæc vox venit, sed propter vos. 30 Jesus answered and said: This voice did not come because of me, but because of you. 31 Nunc judicium est mundi : nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras. 31 Now is the judgment of the world: now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am exalted from the earth, will draw all things to myself. ) 33 (And this he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.)

34 Respondit ei turba : Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in æternum : et quomodo tu dicis : Oportet exaltari Filium hominis ? 34 The crowd answered him: We have heard from the law that Christ remains forever: and how do you say: It is necessary for the Son of man to be exalted? quis est iste Filius hominis ? Who is this Son of Man? 35 Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Adhuc modicum, lumen in vobis est. 35 Then Jesus said to them: There is still a little light in you. Jesus said to them, "The light will be among you only a little while. Walk while you have light, so that darkness does not overtake you; and he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be children of the light. Jesus said these things, and went and hid himself from them.

But when he had performed so many signs before them, they did not believe in him; 38 that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, which he said:

Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro ? Lord, who believed what we heard? et brachium Domini cui revelatum est ? and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?

39 Propterea non poterant credere, quia iterum dixit Isaias : 39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

40 He blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that they could not see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and be converted, and heal them.

42 Nevertheless, many of the leaders also believed in him: but because of the Pharisees they did not confess, so that they would not be thrown out of the synagogue. 43 For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. but into him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am light come into the world, that whosoever believeth in me should not remain in darkness. 47 And if any man hear my words, and keep them not, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him:

Sermo quem locutus sum, ille judicabit eum in novissimo die.49 Quia ego ex meipso non sum locutus, sed qui misit me, Pater, ipse mihi mandatum dedit quid dicam et quid loquar.50 Et scio quia mandatum ejus vita æterna est : quæ ergo ego loquor, sicut dixit mihi Pater, sic loquor. The word which I have spoken, he will judge him on the last day. 49 Because I did not speak of myself, but he who sent me, Father, himself gave me a commandment what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life: which then I speak as the Father told me, so I speak. the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, 49 because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me."
