At one time the Fox and the Stork were on visiting terms and seemed very good friends. Hubo un tiempo en que el Zorro y la Cigüeña se visitaban y parecían muy buenos amigos. So the Fox invited the Stork to dinner, and for a joke put nothing before her but some soup in a very shallow dish. La zorra invitó a cenar a la cigüeña y, para bromear, sólo le puso sopa en un plato muy llano. This the Fox could easily lap up, but the Stork could only wet the end of her long bill in it, and left the meal as hungry as when she began. El zorro pudo engullirlo fácilmente, pero la cigüeña sólo pudo mojar en él el extremo de su largo pico, y se marchó de la comida tan hambrienta como cuando empezó. ‘I am sorry,' said the Fox, ‘the soup is not to your liking.' 'Lo siento', dijo el Zorro, 'la sopa no es de su agrado'.

‘Pray do not apologise,' said the Stork. Por favor, no te disculpes -dijo la cigüeña-. ‘I hope you will return this visit, and come and dine with me soon.' So a day was appointed when the Fox should visit the Stork; but when they were seated at table all that was for their dinner was contained in a very long-necked jar with a narrow mouth, in which the Fox could not insert his snout, so all he could manage to do was to lick the outside of the jar. Pero cuando se sentaron a la mesa, todo lo que había para cenar estaba contenido en una jarra de cuello muy largo y boca estrecha, en la que la zorra no podía meter el hocico, de modo que lo único que conseguía era lamer el exterior de la jarra.

‘I will not apologise for the dinner,' said the Stork: No me disculparé por la cena", dijo la cigüeña:

‘One bad turn deserves another.' 'Un mal giro merece otro'.
