建寧 四年 二月 ， 洛陽 地震 ； 又 海水 泛溢 ， 沿海 居民 ， 盡 被 大浪 捲入 海 中 。

帝 下詔 問 群臣 以 災異 之 由 ， 議郎 蔡邕 上 疏 ， 以為 蜺 墮 雞 化 ， 乃 婦寺 干政 之 所 致 ， 言 頗 切 直 。

因 入 山 採 藥 ， 遇 一 老人 ， 碧眼 童顏 ， 手 執 藜杖 ， 喚 角 至 一 洞 中 ， 以 天書 三 卷 授 之 ， 曰 ： 「 此 名 太平要術 。
When I went into the mountains to collect herbs, I met an old man with blue eyes and a childish face. He held a quinoa stick in his hand. He called the horn to a cave and taught him the three volumes of the Heavenly Book, saying: "This is called the Essential Technique of Peace."
汝 得 之 ， 當 代天 宣化 ， 普救 世人 ； 若 萌 異心 ， 必 獲 惡報 。 」
If you get it, it will be proclaimed by heaven in this generation and save everyone in the world. If you have a different intention, you will definitely receive evil retribution. "
角 拜 問 姓名 。
He asked for his name.
老人 曰 ： 「 吾 乃 南華 老 仙 也 。 」
言 訖 ， 化 陣 清風 而 去 。

角 得 此 書 ， 曉夜 攻 習 ， 能 呼風喚雨 ， 號 為 太平道人 。
Jiao obtained this book and studied it at dawn and night. He was able to call the wind and rain, and was named Taiping Taoist.
中平 元年 正月 內 ， 疫氣 流行 ， 張角 散施 符水 ， 為 人 治病 ， 自稱 大 賢 良師 。
角 有 徒弟 五百 餘 人 ， 雲游 四方 ， 皆 能 書符 念咒 。
次後 徒 眾 日 多 ， 角 乃 立 三十六 方 ， ─ 大 方 萬餘 人 ， 小 方 六七千 ─ ， 各 立 渠 帥 ， 稱為 將軍 。

訛 言 「 蒼天 已 死 ， 黃天 當 立 。 」

People from the eight states of Qing, You, Xu, Ji, Jing, Yang, Yan, and Henan all serve the great sage Zhang Jiao's name.
角 遣 其 黨 馬元義 ， 暗 齎 金 帛 ， 結交 中涓 封諝 ， 以 為 內應 。
Jiao sent his party Ma Yuanyi to exchange gold and silk secretly, and made friends with him, thinking that he would be an internal response.
角 與 二弟 商議 曰 ： 「 至難 得 者 ， 民心 也 。
Jiao discussed with his second brother and said, "The most rare thing is the people's heart."
今 民心 已 順 ， 若 不 乘勢 取 天下 ， 誠 為 可惜 。 」
遂 一面 私 造 黃 旗 ， 約 期 舉 事 ； 一面 使 弟子 唐州 ， 馳 書 報 封諝 。
唐州 乃 逕 赴 省 中 告 變 。
Tangzhou went directly to the province to complain.
帝 召 大 將軍 何進 調兵 擒 馬元義 ， 斬 之 ； 次 收 封諝 等 一干 人 下獄 。
張角 聞知 事 露 ， 星夜 舉兵 ， 自稱 天公 將軍 ， ─ 張寶 稱 地公 將軍 ， 張梁 稱 人公 將軍 ─ 。
申言 於 眾 曰 ： 「 今 漢 運 將 終 ， 大 聖人 出 ﹔ 汝等 皆 宜 順從 天意 ， 以 獎 太平 。 」
He prophesied to everyone: "Today, the fate of the Han Dynasty is about to end, and the great sage will appear; you should all obey the will of God and use your oars to achieve peace."
四方 百姓 ， 裹 黃巾 從 張角 反 者 ， 四五十 萬 。
The people from all over the world, wrapped in yellow scarves and turning their backs, numbered four to five million.
賊 勢 浩大 ， 官軍 望 風 而 靡 。
The thieves are so powerful that the officers and soldiers are overwhelmed.
何進 奏 帝 火速 降 詔 ， 令 各 處 備 禦 ， 討 賊 立功 ； 一 面 遣 中郎將 盧植 ， 皇甫嵩 ， 朱雋 ， 各 引 精兵 ， 分 三 路 討 之 。
He Jin reported that the emperor had issued an edict quickly, ordering all the troops to be prepared to attack the thieves. On the one hand, he sent the generals Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song, and Zhu Jun to attack them in three separate ways.
且 說 張角 一 軍 ， 前 犯 幽州 界分 。
Let us say that Zhang Jiao's army invaded the boundary of Youzhou.
幽州 太守 劉焉 ， 乃 江夏 竟陵 人氏 ， 漢 魯恭王 之後 也 ； 當時 聞得 賊兵 將 至 ， 召 校尉 鄒靖 計議 。
Liu Yan, the governor of Youzhou, was a native of Jingling, Jiangxia, and the queen of King Gong of Han and Lu. At that time, he heard that the bandits were coming, so he summoned Zou Jing, the captain of the school, to make plans.
靖 曰 ： 「 賊兵 眾 ， 我 兵 寡 ， 明公 宜 作 速 招 軍 應 敵 。 」
Jing said: "There are many thieves and I have few soldiers. It is advisable for me to recruit troops quickly to meet the enemy."
劉焉 然 其 說 ， 隨即 出榜 招募 義兵 。
榜文 行 到 涿縣 ， 乃 引出 涿縣 中 一 個 英雄 。
那 人 不 甚 好 讀書 ； 性 寬 和 ， 寡 言語 ， 喜 怒 不 形於色 ； 素 有 大志 ， 專 好 結交 天下 豪傑 ； 生 得 身長 七 尺 五 寸 ， 兩 耳 垂 肩 ， 雙手 過 膝 ， 目 能 自 顧 其 耳 ， 面 如 冠玉 ， 脣 若 塗 脂 ； 中山靖王 劉勝 之 後 ， 漢 景帝 閣下 玄孫 ﹔ 姓 劉 ， 名 備 ， 字 玄德 。
That man was not very good at reading; he was kind-hearted, taciturn, and could express his emotions and anger; he was always ambitious and liked to make friends with the world's heroes; he was born with a height of seven feet and five inches, his ears were hanging down from his shoulders, his hands were above his knees, and he could only look at himself. His ears, his face are like crown jade, and his lips are as if they were greased. After Liu Sheng, King Jing of Zhongshan, he was the great-great-grandson of Emperor Jing of the Han Dynasty; his surname was Liu, his given name was Bei, and his courtesy name was Xuande.
昔 劉勝 之 子 劉貞 ， 漢武 時 封 涿鹿亭侯 ， 後 坐 酬金 失 侯 ， 因此 遺 這 一 枝 在 涿縣 。
In the past, Liu Zhen, the son of Liu Sheng, was granted the title of Marquis of Zhuolu Pavilion during the Han Dynasty. However, he lost the title of Marquis of Zhuolu after his death, so he left this branch in Zhuo County.
The point here is that Liu Bei's ancestor Liu Zhen had been granted a title and duties associated with Zhuolu County (also known as Zhuo County), but even after Liu Zhen lost the title and duties, a branch of Liu Zhen's descendants remained in the area.

家 住 本 縣 樓桑村 。
其 家 之 東南 ， 有 一 大 桑 樹 ， 高 五 丈 餘 ， 遙望 之 ， 童童 如 車蓋 。
相 者 云 ： 「 此 家 必 出 貴人 。 」
The fortune teller said: "This family will definitely produce a noble person."
玄德 幼時 ， 與 鄉 中 小 兒 戲 於 樹 下 ， 曰 ： 「 我 為 天子 ， 當 乘 此 車 蓋 。 」
When Xuande was young, he was playing with the children in the village under a tree and said, "As the emperor, I should ride on this chariot."
叔父 劉元起 奇 其 言 ， 曰 ： 「 此 兒 非 常 人 也 ！
Uncle Liu Yuanqi was surprised and said, "This boy is very human!"
」 因 見 玄德 家 貧 ， 常 資給 之 。
” Seeing that Xuande’s family was poor, he often gave him money.
年 十五 歲 ， 母 使 游 學 ， 嘗 師事 鄭玄 、 盧植 ； 與 公孫瓚 等 為 友 。
及 劉焉 發 榜 招軍 時 ， 玄德 年 己 二十八 歲 矣 。
當日 見 了 榜文 ， 慨然 長歎 。
When I saw the announcement that day, I sighed deeply.
隨後 一 人 厲聲 言 曰 ： 「 大丈夫 不 與 國家 出力 ， 何故 長 歎 ？
」
玄德 回視 其 人 ： 身 長 八 尺 ， 豹 頭 環 眼 ， 燕 頷 虎鬚 ， 聲 若 巨 雷 ， 勢 如 奔馬 。
玄德 見 他 形貌 異常 ， 問 其 姓名 。
其 人 曰 ： 「 某 姓 張 ， 名 飛 ， 字 翼德 。
The man said: "My surname is Zhang, my given name is Fei, my given name is Yide.
世居 涿郡 ， 頗 有 莊田 ， 賣 酒 屠 豬 ， 專 好 結交 天下 豪傑 。
He lived in Zhuo County for a long time, owned quite a lot of land, sold wine and butchered pigs, and made friends with the world's heroes.
適 纔 見 公 看 榜 而 歎 ， 故此 相 問 。 」
Just then I saw the public sighing after looking at the list, so I asked him. "
玄德 曰 ： 「 我 本 漢室 宗親 ， 姓 劉 ， 名 備 。
今 聞 黃巾 倡 亂 ， 有志 欲 破 賊 安 民 ； 恨 力 不能 ， 故 長 歎 耳 。 」
Now I hear that the Yellow Turbans are promoting chaos, and they are determined to destroy thieves and bring peace to the people; but they are unable to do so with hatred, so they sigh. "
飛 曰 ： 「 吾 頗 有 資財 ， 當 招募 鄉勇 ， 與 公 同 舉 大事 ， 如何 ？
Fei said, "I have quite a lot of money. How about recruiting local warriors to help the public with great tasks?"
」 玄德 甚 喜 ， 遂 與 同 入 村 店 中 飲酒 。
正 飲 間 ， 見 一 大漢 ， 推 著 一 輛 車子 ， 到 店 門首 歇 了 ； 入 店 坐下 ， 便 喚 酒保 ： 「 快 斟 酒 來 吃 ， 我 待 趕入 城 去 投 軍 。 」
In the drinking room, I saw a big man pushing a cart and resting at the front of the store. After entering the store and sitting down, he called the bartender: "Hurry up and pour some wine. I will rush into the city to join the army."
玄德 看 其 人 ： 身 長 九 尺 ， 髯 長 二 尺 ： 面 如 重 棗 ， 脣 若 塗 脂 ； 丹鳳 眼 ， 臥 蠶 眉 ： 相貌 堂堂 ， 威風凜凜 。
Xuande looked at the man: He was nine feet long, and his beard was two feet long. His face was like a heavy jujube, and his lips were as if they were greased. His eyes were red and phoenix, and his eyebrows were like silkworms. His appearance was majestic and majestic.
玄德 就 邀 他 同 坐 ， 叩 其 姓名 。
其 人 曰 ： 「 吾 姓 關 ， 名 羽 ， 字 壽長 ， 後 改 雲長 ， 河東 解良 人 也 。
He said: "My surname is Guan, my given name is Yu, and my given name is Shouchang, which was later changed to Yunchang. I am a good man from Hedong.
因 本處 勢豪 ， 倚勢 凌人 ， 被 吾 殺 了 ； 逃難 江湖 ， 五六 年 矣 。
Because he was powerful in his own place and relied on his power to dominate others, he was killed by me; he fled the world for five or six years.
今 聞 此 處 招 軍 破 賊 ， 特 來 應 募 。 」
Now that I heard that troops are being recruited to defeat thieves, I came here to apply. "
玄德 遂 以 己 志 告 之 。
Xuande then informed him of his ambition.
雲長 大 喜 。

同 到 張飛 莊 上 ， 共 議 大事 。
飛 曰 ： 「 吾 莊 後 有 一 桃園 ， 花 開 正 盛 ； 明日 當 於 園 中 祭告 天地 ， 我 三 人 結為 兄弟 ， 協力 同心 ， 然後 可 圖 大事 。 」
Fei said: "There is a peach garden behind my village, and the flowers are in full bloom. Tomorrow I will pray to heaven and earth in the garden. The three of us will become brothers and work together to achieve great things."
玄德 、 雲長 、 齊聲 應 曰 ： 「 如此 甚 好 。 」
次日 ， 於 桃園 中 ， 備下 烏牛 白 馬 祭禮 等 項 ， 三 人 焚香 ， 再 拜 而 說 誓 曰 ： 「 念 劉備 、 關羽 、 張飛 ， 雖然 異 姓 ， 既 結為 兄弟 ， 則 同心協力 ， 救困 扶危 ； 上 報 國家 ， 下 安 黎庶 ； 不 求 同 年 同 月 同 日 生 ， 但願 同 年 同 月 同 日 死 。
The next day, in the peach garden, they prepared the black ox and white horse sacrifice and other items. The three of them burned incense, bowed again and said an oath: "I remember Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. Although they have different surnames, since they have become brothers, they will work together to rescue the poor. To help people in danger; to report to the country, and to protect the common people; I don’t want to be born in the same year, the same month and the same day, but I hope to die in the same year, the same month and the same day.
皇天后土 ， 實 鑒 此 心 。

背 義 忘 恩 ， 天人 共 戮 。 」

誓 畢 ， 拜 玄德 為 兄 ， 關羽 次之 ， 張飛 為 弟 。
祭 罷 天地 ， 復 宰 牛 設 酒 ， 聚 鄉 中 勇士 ， 得 三百 餘 人 ， 就 桃園 中 痛飲 一 醉 。
來日 收拾 軍器 ， 但 恨 無 馬匹 可 乘 。
正 思慮 間 ， 人 報 「 有 兩 個 客人 ， 引 一 夥 伴儅 ， 趕 一 群 馬 ， 投 莊 上來 。 」
While I was thinking about it, someone reported, "I have two guests. I lured a companion and drove a herd of horses to the village."
玄德 曰 ： 「 此 天 佑 我 也 ！
Xuande said, "God bless me!"
」 三 人 出莊 迎接 。
原來 二 客 乃 中山 大 商 ： 一 名 張世平 ， 一 名 蘇雙 ， 每 年 往 北 販 馬 ， 近 因 寇發 而 回 。
玄德 請 二 人 到 莊 ， 置酒 管待 ， 訴 說 欲 討 賊 安民 之 意 。
二 客 大 喜 ， 願 將 良馬 五十 匹 相 送 ； 又 贈 金銀 五百 兩 ， 鑌鐵 一千 斤 ， 以 資 器 用 。
The two guests were overjoyed and wanted to give each other fifty good horses, five hundred taels of gold and silver, and a thousand catties of iron for use as utensils.
玄德 謝 別 二 客 ， 便 命 良匠 打造 雙股劍 。
雲長 造 青龍 偃月刀 ， 又 名 冷豔 鋸 ， 重 八十二 斤 。
張飛 造 丈八 點鋼 矛 。
各 置 全 身 鎧甲 。
共 聚 鄉勇 五百 餘 人 ， 來 見 鄒靖 。
More than 500 people from the countryside gathered together to see Zou Jing.
鄒靖 引見 太守 劉焉 。

三 人 參見 畢 ， 各 通 姓名 。
After the three people met, they all knew each other by name.
玄德 說起 宗派 ， 劉焉 大喜 ， 遂 認 玄德 為 姪 。
不 數 日 ， 人 報 黃巾 賊將 程遠志 統兵 五萬 來犯 涿郡 。
劉焉 令 鄒靖 引 玄德 等 三 人 ， 統兵 五百 ， 前去 破 敵 。
Liu Yan ordered Zou Jing to lead Xuande and three other people with five hundred troops to defeat the enemy.
玄德 等 欣然 領軍 前進 ， 直 至 大興山 下 ， 與 賊 相見 。
Xuande and others happily led the army forward until they met the thieves at the foot of Daxing Mountain.

當下 兩 軍 相 對 ， 玄德 出 馬 ， ─ 左 有 雲長 ， 右 有 翼德 ─ ， 揚鞭 大罵 ： 「 反 國 逆 賊 ， 何不 早 降 ！
At that moment, the two armies were facing each other. Xuande came out, with Yun Chang on the left and Yi De on the right. He raised his whip and yelled: "You rebel against the country, why don't you surrender early!"

程遠志 大怒 ， 遣 副將 鄧茂 出戰 。
張飛 挺 丈八 蛇矛 直 出 ， 手 起 處 ， 刺中 鄧茂 心窩 ， 翻身 落 馬 。
Zhang Fei stretched out his eight-foot-long snake spear and stabbed Deng Mao in the heart where his hand started. He turned over and fell from his horse.
程遠志 見 折 了 鄧茂 ， 拍 馬 舞 刀 ， 直 取 張飛 。
When Cheng Yuanzhi saw that Deng Mao had been defeated, he slapped his horse and wielded his sword to capture Zhang Fei.
雲長 舞動 大 刀 ， 縱 馬 飛 迎 。
程遠志 見 了 ， 早 吃 一 驚 ； 措手不及 ， 被 雲長 刀 起 處 ， 揮 為 兩 段 。

後人 有 詩 讚 二 人 曰 ：
英雄 發穎 在 今朝 ， 一 試 矛 兮 一 試 刀 。

初 出 便 將 威力 展 ， 三 分 好 把 姓名 標 。
When you first come out, you will show your power, and mark your name with three points.
眾 賊 見 程遠志 被 斬 ， 皆 倒戈 而 走 。
When all the thieves saw that Cheng Yuanzhi was beheaded, they all defected and ran away.
玄德 揮軍 追趕 ， 投降 者 不計其數 ， 大勝 而 回 。
劉焉 親自 迎接 ， 賞 勞 軍士 。
Liu Yan personally welcomed him and rewarded the sergeant for his service.
次日 ， 接得 青州 太守 龔景 牒文 ， 言 黃巾賊 圍城 將 陷 ， 乞 賜 救援 。
The next day, I received a letter from Gong Jing, the prefect of Qingzhou, saying that the Yellow Turban bandits would besieging the city and begging for help.
劉焉 與 玄德 商議 。
玄德 曰 ： 「 備 願 往 救 之 。 」
Xuande said: "I am ready to rescue him."
劉焉 令 鄒靖 將兵 五千 ， 同 玄德 ， 關 ， 張 ， 投 青州 來 。
Liu Yan ordered Zou Jing to send five thousand troops to Qingzhou with Xuande, Guan, and Zhang.
賊眾 見 救軍 至 ， 分兵 混戰 。
玄德 兵 寡 不勝 ， 退 三十 里 下寨 。
Xuande was outnumbered and retreated thirty miles to the stronghold.
玄德 謂 關 、 張 曰 、 「 賊 眾 我 寡 ， 必 出 奇兵 ， 方 可 取 勝 。 」
Xuande said to Guan and Zhang, "There are many thieves and we are few, so we must use surprise troops to win."
乃 分 關公 引 一千 軍 伏 山 左 ， 張飛 引 一千 軍 伏 山 右 ， 鳴金 為 號 ， 齊 出 接應 。
Then he divided Guan Gong and led a thousand troops to the left side of the mountain, and Zhang Fei led a thousand troops to the right side of the mountain. They sounded the gold signal and all went out to respond.
鳴金為號 , 齊出接應 means "__agreeing__ that when they heard the clanging of metal, both armies would simultaneously 齊 emerge 出 to meet 接 (to meet allied troops) and be prepared to assist 應".
次日 ， 玄德 與 鄒靖 ， 引 軍 鼓譟 而 進 。
賊眾 迎戰 ， 玄德 引 軍 便 退 。
The thieves fought, Xuande led the army and retreated.
賊眾 乘勢 追趕 ， 方 過 山嶺 ， 玄德 軍 中 一齊 鳴金 ， 左右 兩 軍 齊 出 ， 玄德 麾 軍 回身 復 殺 。
三 路 夾攻 ， 賊 眾 大 潰 。
直 趕至 青州城 下 ， 太守 龔景 亦 率 民兵 出 城 助 戰 。
賊 勢 大敗 ， 剿戮 極 多 ， 遂 解 青州 之 圍 。
The thieves were defeated, many were killed, and the siege of Qingzhou was lifted.
後人 有 詩 讚 玄德 曰 ：
運籌 決算 有 神功 ， 二 虎 還 須 遜 一 龍 。
There is a magical skill in planning and final calculation, and two tigers must be inferior to one dragon.
初 出 便 能 垂 偉績 ， 自 應 分 鼎 在 孤窮 。
You can make great achievements when you first come out, and you should be divided into lonely and poor.
自應分鼎在孤窮 refers to Liu Bei's fate throughout his life. From 自 supporting 應 (the rump of state of the Eastern Han), the governmental power 鼎 was divided 分 into three parts (the Three Kingdoms), and Liu Bei later found himself amid 在 loneliness 孤 and poverty 窮.
龔景 犒軍 畢 ， 鄒靖 欲 回 。
After Gong Jing rewarded his troops, Zou Jing wanted to return.
玄德 曰 ： 「 近 聞 中郎將 盧植 與 賊首 張角 戰 於 廣宗 ， 備 昔 曾 師事 盧植 ， 欲 往 助 之 。 」
Xuande said: "I recently heard that Zhonglang's general Lu Zhi was fighting with the thief Zhang Zhang in Guangzong. I had studied with Lu Zhi in the past and wanted to help him."
於是 鄒靖 引 軍 自 回 ， 玄德 與 關 、 張 引 本部 五百 人 投 廣宗 來 。
至 盧植 軍 中 ， 入 帳 施禮 ， 具 道 來意 。
When he arrived at Lu Zhi's army, he entered the tent and saluted, showing his true intention.
盧植 大 喜 ， 留在 帳 前 聽 調 。
Lu Zhi was overjoyed and stayed in front of the tent to listen.
時 張角 賊眾 十五萬 ， 植 兵 五萬 ， 相拒 於 廣宗 ， 未 見 勝負 。
At that time, there were 150,000 Zhangjiao rebels and 50,000 troops. They resisted Guangzong and there was no victory or defeat.
植 謂 玄德 曰 ： 「 我 今 圍 賊 在 此 ， 賊 弟 張梁 ， 張寶 在 潁川 ， 與 皇甫嵩 、 朱雋 對壘 。
汝 可 引 本部 人 馬 ， 我 更 助 汝 一千 官軍 ， 前去 潁川 打探 消息 ， 約 期 剿 捕 。 」
You can lead your troops, and I will help you with a thousand officers and soldiers to go to Yingchuan to inquire about the news, and make an appointment to suppress and arrest them. "
玄德 領 命 ， 引 軍 星夜 投 潁川 來 。
時 皇甫嵩 、 朱雋 領軍 拒 賊 ， 賊 戰 不利 ， 退 入 長社 ， 依 草 結 營 。
At that time, Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun led the army to resist the thieves, but the thieves were unsuccessful in the battle, so they retreated to Changshe and formed a camp based on grass.
嵩 與 雋 計 曰 ： 「 賊 依 草 結 營 ， 當 用 火 攻 之 。 」
遂 令 軍士 ， 每 人 束草 一 把 ， 暗地 埋伏 。
Then he ordered the sergeants to each bundle a handful of grass and lay in ambush.
其 夜 大 風 忽 起 。
That night a strong wind suddenly came up.
二更 以 後 ， 一齊 縱火 ， 嵩 與 雋 各 引 兵 攻擊 賊 寨 ， 火燄 張 天 ， 賊眾 驚慌 ， 馬 不及 鞍 ， 人 不及 甲 ， 四散 奔走 。
After the second watch, they all set fire together. Song and Jun each led their troops to attack the bandits' stronghold. The flames spread to the sky, and the thieves panicked. The horses were no longer strong enough to carry saddles, and the men were weak to armor. They scattered in all directions.
殺 到 天明 ， 張梁 、 張寶 引 敗 殘 軍士 ， 奪路 而 走 。
They fought until dawn, Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao defeated the remaining soldiers and fled.
忽 見 一 彪 軍馬 ， 盡 打 紅旗 ， 當頭 來到 ， 截 往 去路 。
Suddenly I saw a group of soldiers and horses, all flying red flags, coming at the head and cutting off their way.
為首 閃出 一 將 ， 身 長 七 尺 ， 細眼 長 髯 ； 官 拜 騎都尉 ； 沛國 譙郡 人 也 ： 姓 曹 ， 名 操 ， 字 孟德 。
A general flashed out at the head, seven feet long, with slender eyes and long beard; his official title was Cavalry Captain; he was from Qiao County, Pei State: his surname was Cao, his given name was Cao, and his courtesy name was Mengde.
操 父 曹嵩 ， 本 姓 夏侯氏 ； 因為 中常侍 曹騰 之 養子 ， 故 冒姓 曹 。
Cao Song, Cao's father, whose real surname was Xiahou; because he was the adopted son of Cao Teng who served as a regular servant, he assumed the surname of Cao.
曹嵩 生 操 ， 小字 阿瞞 ， 一 名 吉利 。
Cao Song was born in Cao, whose small name is Ah Ma, and whose name is auspicious.
操 幼時 ， 好 游 獵 ， 喜 歌舞 ； 有 權謀 ， 多 機變 。
操 有 叔父 ， 見 操 游蕩 無度 ， 嘗 怒 之 ， 言 於 曹嵩 。
嵩 責 操 。
Song blames Cao.
操 忽 心 生 一 計 ： 見 叔父 來 ， 詐 倒 於 地 ， 作 中風 之 狀 。
叔父 驚 告 嵩 ， 嵩 急 視 之 ， 操 故 無恙 。
嵩 曰 ： 「 叔 言 汝 中 風 ， 今 己 愈 乎 ？
」 操 曰 ： 「 兒 自來 無 此 病 ； 因 失愛 於 叔父 ， 故 見 罔 耳 。 」
Cao Cao said, "My son has never had this disease. Because he fell out of love with his uncle, he is blind to his ears."
嵩 信 其 言 。
後 叔父 但 言 操 過 ， 嵩 並 不 聽 。
Later, the uncle said that he had done something wrong, but Song didn't listen.
因此 ， 操 得 恣意 放蕩 。
時人 有 橋玄 者 ， 謂 操 曰 ： 「 天下 將 亂 ， 非 命世 之 才 ， 不能 濟 。
At that time, there was Qiao Xuan, who said to Cao Cao: "The world is about to be in chaos, and no one who has the talent to save the world can save it."
能 安 之 者 ， 其 在 君 乎 ？
Whoever can be at peace is with you?
」 南陽 何顒 見 操 ， 言 ： 「 漢室 將 亡 ， 安 天下 者 ， 必 此 人 也 。 」
He Yong of Nanyang saw Cao Cao and said: "The Han Dynasty is about to perish, and this person must be the one who can bring peace to the world."
汝南 許劭 ， 有 知人 之 名 。

又 問 ， 劭 曰 ： 「 子 治世 之 能臣 ， 亂世 之 奸雄 也 。 」
操 聞 言 大 喜 。
年 二十 ， 舉 孝廉 ， 為 郎 ， 除 洛陽 北 都尉 。
At the age of 20, he was promoted as a filial and honest man, and he was expelled from Luoyang as the Northern Commander.
初 到 任 ， 即 設 五色棒 十餘 條 於 縣 之 四 門 。
When he first took office, he immediately set up more than ten five-color sticks in the four gates of the county.
有 犯禁 者 ， 不 避 豪貴 ， 皆 責 之 。
Anyone who violates the prohibition will be punished, even if he does not avoid the rich and powerful.
中常侍 蹇碩 之 叔 ， 提 刀 夜 行 ， 操 巡夜 拏 住 ， 就 棒 責 之 。
Jian Shuo's uncle, who often serves as a servant, walks at night with a knife in his hand. When patrolling at night, he catches it and punishes him with a stick.
由 是 ， 內外 莫 敢 犯 者 ， 威名 頗 震 。
後 為 頓丘 令 。
Later it was called Dunqiuling.
因 黃巾 起 ， 拜 為 騎都尉 ， 引 馬步軍 五千 ， 前來 潁川 助 戰 。
正 值 張梁 、 張寶 敗走 ， 曹操 攔住 ， 大 殺 一 陣 ， 斬首 萬餘 級 ， 奪得 旗 旛 、 金鼓 馬匹 極 多 。
When Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao were defeated, Cao Cao stopped them and killed them, beheading more than ten thousand people, and captured many flags, flags, golden drums and horses.
張梁 、 張寶 死戰 得 脫 。
Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao fought to the death and escaped.
操 見 過 皇甫嵩 ， 朱雋 ， 隨即 引 兵 追襲 張梁 、 張寶 去 了 。
卻說 玄德 引 關 、 張 來 潁川 ， 聽得 喊殺 之 聲 ， 又 望見 火光 燭 天 ， 急 引 兵 來 時 ， 賊 已 敗 散 。
But when Xuande led Guan and Zhang came to Yingchuan, he heard the shouts of killing and saw the light of fire in the sky. When he hurriedly led the troops to come, the thieves had already been defeated.
玄德 見 皇甫嵩 ， 朱雋 ，具 道 盧植 之 意 。
When Xuande met Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun, he thought of Lu Zhi's idea.
嵩 曰 ： 「 張梁 、 張寶 勢 窮 力 乏 ， 必 投 廣宗 去 依 張角 。
Song said: "Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao are so weak that they must join Guang Zong and follow Zhang Jiao.
玄德 可 即 星夜 往 助 。 」
Xuande can go to help at starry night. "
玄德 領命 ， 遂 引 兵 復 回 。
到 得 半路 ， 只 見 一 簇 軍馬 ， 護送 一 輛 檻車 ， 車 中 之 囚 ， 乃 盧植 也 。
玄德 大 驚 ， 滾 鞍 下 馬 ， 問 其 緣故 。
植 曰 ： 「 我 圍 張角 ， 將次 可 破 ； 因 角 用 妖術 ， 未 能 即 勝 。
Zhi said: "I surrounded and stretched my horns, and the generals were able to defeat them; but because of the witchcraft on the horns, I could not win immediately."
朝廷 差 黃門 左豐 前來 體 探 ， 問 我 索取 賄賂 。
The imperial court sent Huangmen Zuofeng to come to investigate and asked me for a bribe.
我 答 曰 ： 『 軍 糧 尚 缺 ， 安 有 餘 錢 奉承 天使 ？
I replied: "The army is still short of rations, but do you have enough money to flatter the angels?"
』 左豐 挾 恨 ， 回 奏 朝廷 ， 說 我 高壘 不 戰 ， 惰慢 軍心 ； 因此 朝廷 震怒 ， 遣 中郎將 董卓 來 代 將 我 兵 ， 取 我 回 京 問 罪 。 」
” Zuo Feng, full of hatred, reported back to the court, saying that I was too lazy to fight because I had high bases and was slowing down the morale of the army. Therefore, the court was furious and sent General Dong Zhuo to take charge of my troops and take me back to the capital for questioning. "
張飛 聽罷 ， 大怒 ， 要 斬 護送 軍人 ， 以 救 盧植 。
玄德 急 止 之 曰 ： 「 朝廷 自有 公論 ， 汝 豈可 造 次 ？
Xuande stopped urgently and said: "The imperial court has its own public opinion, how can you make a mistake?"
」 軍士 簇擁 盧植 去 了 。
關公 曰 ： 「 盧 中郎 已 被 逮 ， 別人 領兵 ， 我等 去 無 所 依 ， 不如 且 回 涿郡 。 」
Guan Gong said: "Lu Zhonglang has been arrested, and others are leading the army. We have nowhere to go, so we might as well go back to Zhuojun."
玄德 從 其 言 ， 遂 引 軍 北 行 。
行 無 二 日 ， 忽 聞 山 後 喊聲 大 震 。
玄德 引 關 、 張 縱 馬 上 高岡 望 之 ， 見 漢軍 大敗 ， 後面 漫山塞野 ， 黃巾 蓋 地 而 來 ， 旗 上 大書 「 天公 將軍 」 。
Xuande led the pass, and Zhang Zong immediately looked at the high hill. He saw that the Han army was defeated, with mountains and fields behind, and yellow scarves covering the ground. On the flag was a big inscription "Tiangong General".
玄德 曰 ： 「 此 張角 也 ！
可 速 戰 ！
」
三 人 飛 馬 引 軍 而 出 。
張角 正 殺敗 董卓 ， 乘勢 趕來 ， 忽 遇 三 人 衝 殺 ， 角 軍 大亂 ， 敗 走 五十餘 里 。
Zhang Jiaozheng had defeated Dong Zhuo and was rushing towards him. Suddenly three men rushed to kill him. Jiao's army was in chaos and was defeated for more than fifty miles.
三 人 救 了 董卓 回 寨 。
The three rescued Dong Zhuo and returned to the village.
卓 問 三 人 現 居 何 職 。
Zhuo asked the three of them what their current positions were.
玄德 曰 ： 「 白身 。 」
Xuande said: "White body."
卓 甚 輕 之 ， 不 為 禮 。
It's not polite to treat Zhuo very lightly.
玄德 出 ， 張飛 大怒 曰 ： 「 我等 親 赴 血戰 ， 救 了 這廝 ， 他 卻 如此 無禮 ﹔ 若 不 殺 之 ， 難 消 我 氣 ！
When Xuande came out, Zhang Fei was furious and said: "We went to the bloody battle in person to save this guy, but he was so rude; if I don't kill him, it will be difficult to relieve my anger!"
」 便 要 提 刀 入帳 來 殺 董卓 。
正 是 ： 人情 勢利 古 猶 今 ， 誰 識 英雄 是 白身 ？
安得 快人 如 翼德 ， 盡 誅 世上 負心 人 ！
