¡Quién sabe si hay una niña que se parezca a Nené! Un viejito que sabe mucho dice que todas las niñas son como Nené. A Nené le gusta más jugar a «mamá», o «a tiendas», o «a hacer dulces» con sus muñecas, que dar la lección de «treses y de cuatros» con la maestra que le viene a enseñar. Porque Nené no tiene mamá: su mamá se ha muerto: y por eso tiene Nené maestra. A hacer dulces es a lo que le gusta más a Nené jugar: ¿y por qué será? : ¡quién sabe! Será porque para jugar a hacer dulces le dan azúcar de veras: por cierto que los dulces nunca le salen bien de la primera vez: ¡son unos dulces más difíciles! : siempre tiene que pedir azúcar dos veces. Y se conoce que Nené no les quiere dar trabajo a sus amigas; porque cuando juega a paseo, o a comprar, o a visitar, siempre llama a sus amiguitas; pero cuando va a hacer dulces, nunca. Y una vez le sucedió a Nené una cosa muy rara: le pidió a su papá dos centavos para comprar un lápiz nuevo, y se le olvidó en el camino, se le olvidó como si no hubiera pensado nunca en comprar el lápiz: lo que compró fue un merengue de fresa. Eso se supo, por supuesto; y desde entonces sus amiguitas no le dicen Nené, sino «Merengue de Fresa».

El padre de Nené la quería mucho. Dicen que no trabajaba bien cuando no había visto por la mañana a «la hijita». El no le decía «Nené», sino «la hijita». Siempre traía el papá de Nené algún libro nuevo, y se lo dejaba ver cuando tenía figuras; y a ella le gustaban mucho unos libros que él traía, donde estaban pintadas las estrellas, que tiene cada una su nombre y su color: y allí decía el nombre de la estrella colorada, y el de la amarilla, y el de la azul, y que la luz tiene siete colores, y que las estrellas pasean por el cielo, lo mismo que las niñas por un jardín. Pero no: lo mismo no: porque las niñas andan en los jardines de aquí para allá, como una hoja de flor que va empujando el viento, mientras que las estrellas van siempre en el cielo por un mismo camino, y no por donde quieren: ¿quién sabe? : puede ser que haya por allá arriba quien cuide a las estrellas, como los papás cuidan acá en la tierra a las niñas. Sólo que las estrellas no son niñas, por supuesto, ni flores de luz, como parece de aquí abajo, sino grandes como este mundo: y dicen que en las estrellas hay árboles, y agua, y gente como acá: y su papá dice que en un libro hablan de que uno se va a vivir a una estrella cuando se muere. «Y dime, papá», le preguntó Nené: «¿por qué ponen las casas de los muertos tan tristes? Si yo me muero, yo no quiero ver a nadie llorar, sino que me toquen la música, porque me voy a ir a vivir en la estrella azul.» «¿Pero, sola, tú sola, sin tu pobre papá?» Y Nené le dijo a su papá:—«¡Malo, que crees eso!» Esa noche no se quiso ir a dormir temprano, sino que se durmió en los brazos de su papá. ¡Los papás se quedan muy tristes, cuando se muere en la casa la madre! El libro no tiene barbas: le salen muchas cintas y marcas por entre las hojas, pero ésas no son barbas: ¡el que sí es barbudo es el gigante que está pintado en el libro! : y es de colores la pintura, unos colores de esmalte que lucen, como el brazalete que le regaló su papá. ¡Ahora no pintan los libros así! El gigante está sentado en el pico de un monte, con una cosa revuelta, como las nubes, del cielo, encima de la cabeza: no tiene más que un ojo, encima de la nariz: está vestido con un blusón, como los pastores, un blusón verde, lo mismo que el campo, con estrellas pintadas, de plata y de oro y la barba es muy larga, muy larga, que llega al pie del monte: y por cada mechón de la barba va subiendo un hombre, como sube la cuerda para ir al trapecio el hombre del circo. ¡Oh, eso no se puede ver de lejos! Nené tiene que bajar el libro de la silla. ¡Cómo pesa este pícaro libro! Ahora sí que se puede ver bien todo. Ya está el libro en el suelo.
