Historia de la cuchara y el tenedor

¡Cuentan las cosas con tantas palabras raras, y uno no las puede entender! : como cuando le dicen ahora a uno en la Exposición de París: «Tome una djirincka—¡djirincka!—y vea en un momento todo lo de la Explanada»: ¡pero primero le tienen que decir a uno lo que es djirincka ! Y por eso no entiende uno las cosas: porque no entiende uno las palabras en que se las dicen. Y luego, que no se lo han de decir a uno todo de la primera vez, porque es tanto que no se lo puede entender todo, como cuando entra uno en una catedral, que de grande que es no ve uno más que los pilares y los arcos, y la luz allá arriba, que entra como jugando por los cristales; y luego, cuando uno ha estado muchas veces, ve claro en la oscuridad, y anda como por una casa conocida. Y no es que uno no quiere saber; porque la verdad es que da vergüenza ver algo y no entenderlo, y el hombre no ha de descansar baste que no entienda todo lo que ve. La muerte es lo más difícil de entender; pero los viejos que han sido buenos dicen que ellos saben lo que es, y por eso están tranquilos, porque es como cuando va a salir el sol, y todo se pone en el mundo fresco y de unos colores hermosos. Y la vida no es difícil de entender tampoco. Cuando uno sabe para lo que sirve todo lo que da la tierra, y sabe lo que han hecho los hombres en el mundo, siente uno deseos de hacer más que ellos todavía: y eso es la vida. Porque los que se están con los brazos cruzados, sin pensar y sin trabajar, viviendo de lo que otros trabajan, ésos comen y beben como los demás hombres, pero en la verdad de la verdad, ésos no están vivos.

Los que están vivos de veras son los que nos hacen los cubiertos de comer, que parecen de plata, y no son de plata pura, sino de una mezcla de metales pobres, a la que le ponen encima con la electricidad uno como baño de plata. Esos sí que trabajan, y hay taller que hace al día cuatrocientas docenas de cubiertos, y tiene como más de mil trabajadores: y muchos son mujeres, que hacen mejor que el hombre todas las cosa de finura y elegancia. Nosotros, los hombres, somos como el león del mundo, y como el caballo de pelear, que no está contento ni se pone hermoso sino cuando huele batalla, y oye ruido de sables y cañones. La mujer no es como nosotros, sino como una flor, y hay que tratarla así, con mucho cuidado y cariño, porque si la tratan mal, se muere pronto, lo mismo que las flores. Para lo delicado tienen mujeres en esas obras de platería, para limar las piezas finas, para bordarlas como encaje, con una sierra que va cortando la plata en dibujos, como esas máquinas de labrar relojes y cestos y estantes de madera blanda. Pero para lo fuerte tienen hombres; para hervir los metales, para hacer ladrillos de ellos, para ponerlos en la máquina delgados como hoja de papel, para las máquinas de recortar en la hoja muchas cucharas y tenedores a la vez, para platearlos en la artesa, donde está la plata hecha agua, de modo que no se la ve, pero en cuanto pasa por la artesa la electricidad, se echa toda sobre las cucharas y los tenedores, que están dentro colgados en hilera de un madero, como las púas de un peine.

Y ya vamos contando la Historia de la Cuchara y el Tenedor. Antes hacían de plata pura todo lo de la mesa, y las jarras y fruteras que se hacen hoy en máquina: no más que para darle figura de jarra a un redondel de plata estaba el pobre hombre dándole con el martillo alrededor de una punta del yunque, hasta que empezaba a tener figura de jarrón, y luego lo hundía de un lado y lo iba anchando de otro, hasta que quedaba redondo de abajo y estrecho en la boca, y luego, a fuerza de mano, le iba bordando de adentro los dibujos y las flores. Ahora se hace con maquina todo eso, y de un vuelo de la rueda queda el redondel hecho un jarro hueco, y lo de mano no es más que lo último, cuando va al dibujo fino de los cinceladores. De esto se puede hablar aquí, porque donde hacen los jarros, hacen los cubiertos; y el metal, lo mismo tienen que hervirlo, y mezclarlo, y enfriarlo, y aplastarlo en láminas para hacer un jarrón que para hacer una cuchara de té. Es hermoso ver eso, y parece que está uno en las entrañas de la tierra, allá donde está el fuego como el mar, que rebosa a veces y quiere salir, que es cuando hay terremotos, y cuando echan humo y agua caliente y cenizas y lava los volcanes, como si se estuviera quemando por adentro el mundo. Eso parece el taller de platería cuando están derritiendo el metal. En un horno se cocinan las piedras, que dan humo y se van desmoronando, y parecen cera que se derrite, y como un agua turbia. En una caldera hierven juntos el níquel, el cobre y el zinc, y luego enfrían la mezcla de los tres metales, y la cortan en barras antes que se acabe de enfriar. No se sabe qué es; pero uno ve con respeto, y como con cariño, a aquellos hombres de delantal y cachucha que sacan con la pala larga de un horno a otro el metal hirviente; tienen cara de gente buena, aquellos hombres de cachucha: ya no es piedra el metal, como era cuando lo trajo el carretón, sino que lo que era piedra se ha hecho barro y ceniza con el calor del horno, y el metal está en la caldera, hirviendo con un ruido que parece susurro, como cuando se tiende la espuma por la playa, o sopla un aire de mañana en las hojas del bosque. Sin saber por qué, se calla uno, y se siente como más fuerte, en el taller de las calderas.

Y después, es como un paseo por una calle de máquinas. Todas se están moviendo a la vez. El vapor es el que las hace andar, pero no tiene cada máquina debajo la caldera del agua, que da el vapor: el vapor está allá, en lo hondo de la platería, y de allí mueve unas correas anchas, que hacen dar vueltas a las ruedas de andar, y en cuanto se mueve la rueda de andar en cada máquina, andan las demás ruedas. La primera máquina se parece a una prensa de enjugar la ropa, donde la ropa sale exprimida entre dos cilindros de goma: allí los cilindros no son de goma, sino de acero; y la barra de metal sale hecha una lámina, del grueso de un cartón: es un cartón de metal. Luego viene la agujereadora, que es una máquina con uno como mortero que baja y sube, como la encía de arriba cuando se come; y el mortero tiene muchas cuchillas en figura de martillo de cabeza larga y estrecha, o de una espumadera de mango fino y cabeza redonda, y cuando baja el mortero todas las cuchillas cortan la lámina a la vez, y dejan la lámina agujereada, y el metal de cada agujero cae a un cesto debajo: y ése es la cuchara, ése es el tenedor. Cada uno de esos pedazos de metal recortados y chatos de figura de martillo es un tenedor; cada uno de los de cabeza redonda, como una moneda muy grande, es una cuchara, ¿Que cómo se le sacan los dientes al tenedor? ¡Ah! esos recortes chatos, lo mismo que los de las cucharas, tienen que calentarse otra vez en el horno, porque si el metal no está caliente se pone tan duro que no se le puede trabajar, y para darle forma tiene que estar blando. Con unas tenazas van sacando los recortes del horno: los ponen en un molde de otra máquina que tiene un mortero de aplastar, y del golpe del mortero ya salen los recortes con figura, y se le ve al tenedor la punta larga y estrecha. Otra máquina más fina lo recorta mejor. Otra le marca los dientes, pero no sueltos ya, como están en el tenedor acabado, sino sujetos todavía. Otra máquina le recorta las uniones, y ya está el tenedor con sus dientes. Luego va a los talleres del trabajo fino. En uno le ponen el filete al mango. En otro le dan la curva, porque de las máquinas de los dientes salió chato, como una hoja de papel. En otra le liman y le redondean las esquinas. En otra lo cincelan si ha de ir adornado, o le ponen las iniciales, si lo quieren con letras. En otra lo pulen, que es cosa muy curiosa, parecida a la de las piedras de amolar, sólo que la máquina de pulir anda más de prisa, y la rueda es de alambres delgados como cabellos, como un cepillo que da vueltas, y muchas, como que da dos mil quinientas vueltas en un minuto. Y de allí sale el tenedor o la cuchara a la platería de veras, porque es donde les ponen el baño de la electricidad, y quedan como vestidos con traje de plata. Los cubiertos pobres, los que van a costar poco, no llevan más que un baño o dos: los buenos llevan tres, para que la plata les dure, aunque nunca dura tanto como la plata que se trabajaba antes con el martillo. Como las cucharas, pues: antes, para hacer una cuchara, no había máquinas de aplastar el metal, ni de sacarlo en láminas delgadas como ahora, sino que a martillazo puro tenía que irlo aplastando el platero, hasta que estaba como él lo quería, y recortaba la cuchara a fuerza de mano, y a muñeca viva le daba al mango el doblez, y para hacerle el hueco le daba golpes muy despacio, cada vez en un punto diferente, encima de un yunque que parecía de jugar, con la punta redonda, como un huevo, hasta que quedaba hueca por dentro la cuchara. Ahora la máquina hace eso. Ponen el recorte de figura de espumadera en uno como yunque, que por la cabeza, donde cae lo redondo, está vacío: de arriba baja con fuerza el mortero, que tiene por debajo un huevo de hierro, y mete lo redondo del recorte en lo hueco del yunque. Ya está la cuchara. Luego la liman, y la adornan, y la pulen como el tenedor, y la llevan al baño de plata: porque es un baño verdadero, en que la plata está en el agua, deshecha, con una mezcla que llaman cianuro de potasio—¡los nombres químicos son todos así! : y entra en el baño la electricidad, que es un poder que no se sabe lo que es, pero da luz, y calor, y movimiento, y fuerza, y cambia y descompone en un instante los metales, y a unos los separa, y a los otros los junta, como en este baño de platear que, en cuanto la electricidad entra y lo revuelve, echa toda la plata del agua sobre las cucharas y los tenedores colgados dentro de él. Los sacan chorreando. Los limpian con sal de potasa. Los tienen al calor sobre láminas de hierro caliente. Los secan bien en tinas de aserrín. Los bruñen en la máquina de cepillar. Con la badana les sacan brillo. Y nos los mandan a la casa, blancos como la luz, en su caja de terciopelo o de seda.
