Seguí hablando con el pinche, por no perder tan buena coyuntura de trabar relaciones con la gente de escalera abajo, y pregunté a mi abastecedor cuál era la opinión más extendida en las reales cocinas sobre los sucesos del día. Afortunadamente se aproximaba la hora de cenar; y llevándome mi amigo al aposento destinado al efecto, me hizo ver que el cuerpo de cocineros seguía a todo el país en la senda trazada por los directores del partido fernandista.

Nada más patriótico, nada más entusiasta que la actitud de aquel puñado de valientes en cuyas cacerolas estaba por decirlo así el paladar de los reyes de España, y era árbitro hasta cierto punto de su bienestar, si no de su existencia. Aunque muchos de los hombres que allí vi eran antiguos y pacíficos servidores, que no participaban de la rebelde inquietud de la gente moza, la mayor parte habían sido deslumbrados por la perruna y grotesca elocuencia de Pedro Collado, el aguador de la fuente del Berro, ya empleado en la servidumbre de Fernando. Este hombre, que con las gracias de su burdo y ramplón ingenio se había conquistado preferente lugar en el corazón del heredero, desempeñaba al principio las funciones de espía en todas las regiones bajas de palacio; vigilaba la servidumbre, la cual a poco empezó por temerle y concluyó por someterse dócilmente a sus mandatos. De este modo llegó a ser Pedro Collado, respecto a los cocineros, pinches y lacayos un verdadero cacique, al modo de los que hoy son alma y azote de las pequeñas localidades en nuestra Península.

Cuando Pedro Collado bajaba contento, el regocijo se difundía como don celeste entre toda la servidumbre: cuando Pedro Collado bajaba taciturno y sombrío, melancólico silencio sustituía a la anterior algazara. Cuando alguno perdía la gracia del aguador, ya podía encomendarse a Dios, y los que tenían la suerte de merecer su benevolencia o de servir de objeto a sus groseras bromas, ya podían considerarse con un pie puesto en la escala de la fortuna.

Aquella noche fue para mí muy interesante porque presencié la prisión de Pedro Collado, contra quien habían resultado cargos muy graves en las primeras actuaciones de la causa. El favorito del Príncipe comunicaba a los más autorizados entre sus amigos las impresiones del día, cuando un alguacil, seguido de algunos soldados de la guardia española, entró a prenderle. No hizo resistencia el aguador, antes bien con la frente erguida y provocativo ademán, siguió a sus guardianes que le condujeron a la cárcel del Sitio, porque a causa de su baja condición no podía alternar con el duque de San Carlos, ni con el del Infantado, presos en las bohardillas de la parte del edificio llamado del Noviciado.

La prisión del aguador produjo en la cocina cierto terror y sepulcral silencio. Interrumpiéronlo después las voces de mando, que cual la de los generales en la guerra, sirven para dirigir la estrategia de las cocinas reales, no menos complicada que la de los campos de batalla. Una voz decía: «Cena del señor infante D. Antonio Pascual». Y al punto la más rica menestra que ha incitado el humano apetito pasó a manos de los criados que servían en el cuarto del infante. Después se oyó la siguiente orden: «La sopa hervida y el huevo estrellado de la señora infanta doña María Josefa». Luego «El chocolate del señor infante D. Francisco de Paula», y nuevos movimientos seguían a estas palabras. Hubo un instante de sosiego, hasta que el cocinero mayor exclamó con voz solemne: «¿Está la polla asada de su eminencia el señor cardenal?». Al instante funcionaron las cacerolas, y la polla asada con otros sustanciosos acompañamientos fue transmitida al cuarto del arzobispo. Por último, un señor muy obeso y vestido de uniforme con galones, que era designado con el estrambótico nombre de guardamangier , se paró en la puerta y dirigiendo su mirada de águila hacia los cocineros, exclamó: «La cena de S. M. el Rey». Era cosa de ver la multitud de platos que se destinaron a aliviar la debilidad estomacal diariamente producida en la naturaleza de Carlos IV por el ejercicio de la caza. Como yo no podía apartar mis ojos de aquella rica colección de manjares, cuyo aromático vapor convidaba a comer, mi amigo el pinche me dijo:

-Descuida, Gabrielillo, que ya probaremos algo de aquellos platos. Al Rey le gusta ver muchos platos en su mesa; pero de cada uno no come más que un poquito. Algunos vuelven como han ido. Voy a preparar el agua helada.

-¿Qué es eso de agua helada? -pregunté-. ¿Y quién se alimenta con manjar de tan poca sustancia?

-El Rey -me contestó-, una vez que llena bien el buche, pide un vaso de agua helada como la misma nieve; coge un panecillo, le quita la corteza, empapa bien la miga en el agua, y se la come después. Jamás toma más postre que ése.

Un buen rato después de haberse pedido la cena del Rey, pidieron la de la Reina, y esta diferencia de tiempo llamó tanto mi atención, que pregunté a mi amigo la razón de que no comieran juntos los Reyes y sus hijos.

-Calla, tonto -me dijo-, eso no puede ser. En las casas de todo el mundo, comen padres e hijos en una misma mesa. Pero aquí no: ¿no ves que eso sería faltar a la etiqueta? Los infantes comen cada uno en su cuarto, y S. M. el Rey solo en el suyo, servido por los guardias. La Reina es la única persona que podría comer con el Rey, pero ya sabes que acostumbra comer sola, por lo que callo.

-¿Por qué?, dímelo a mí. Es que tendrá alguna persona que la acompañe de ocultis .

-Quiá: no come delante de alma viviente ni que la maten.

-¿Ni tampoco delante de sus damas?

-Sólo la camarera que la sirve la ve comer. Te diré por qué -añadió en voz baja-. ¿Ves aquellos dientes tan bonitos que enseña la Reina cuando se ríe? Pues son postizos, y como tiene que quitárselos para comer, no quiere que la vean.

-Eso sí que está bueno.

En efecto, lo que me dijo el pinche era cierto, y en aquellos tiempos el arte odontálgico no había adelantado lo suficiente para permitir las funciones de la masticación con las herramientas postizas.

-Ya ves tú -continuó el pinche-, si tienen razón los que critican a la Reina porque engaña al pueblo, haciendo creer lo que no es. ¿Y cómo ha de hacerse querer de sus vasallos una soberana que gasta dientes ajenos?

Como yo no creía que las funciones de los reyes fueran semejantes a las de un perro de presa, no pensé lo mismo que mi amigo, aunque me callé sobre el particular.

Luego pidieron la cena de S. A. el Príncipe de la Paz, y la de los Consejeros de Estado, lo cual me decidió a subir, creyendo llegada la hora de servir también la de mi ama. Se acercaba para mí el dulce momento de verla, de hablarla, de escuchar sus mandatos, de pasar junto a ella rozando mi vestido con el suyo, de embelesarme con su sonrisa y con su mirada. Ausente de ella, mi imaginación no se apartaba de tan hermoso objeto, como mariposa que rodea sin cesar la luz que la fascina. Pero muy contra mi voluntad, aquella noche Amaranta no se dignó ponerme al corriente de lo que deseaba saber respecto a mis servicios. Estaba escrito que fuera a la noche siguiente.

Aunque aún no me había acontecido en palacio nada digno de notarse, yo estaba un si es no es descorazonado. ¿Por qué? No podía decirlo. Encerrado en mi cuarto, y tendido sobre el angosto lecho, rebelde mi naturaleza al sueño, me puse a pensar en mi situación, en el carácter de Amaranta que empezaba a parecerme muy raro, y en la clase de fortuna que a su lado me aguardaba. Acordeme de Inés, a quien por aquellos días tenía muy olvidada, y cuando su memoria, refrescando mi mente, me predispuso a un dulce sueño, sentía (no sé si fue engañoso efecto del sueño) unos golpecitos en mi pecho, producidos por vivas y dolorosas palpitaciones, como si una mano amiga, perteneciente a persona que deseaba entrar a toda costa, estuviese tocando a las puertas de mi corazón.
